\"\"Man, if you\u2019re a pro-choice writer, you\u2019ve got it made<\/em>. Want to run a hit piece against pro-lifers but don\u2019t have the time, patience, scruples, or intellectual curiosity for fact-checking? No problem! It\u2019s not like the target audience is into that stuff anyway.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s beneficiary of abortionism\u2019s low expectations is Raw Story<\/em> editor<\/a> Travis Gettys, who on Tuesday attacked<\/a> Live Action\u2019s second SEXED investigation<\/a> video, which exposes a Planned Parenthood staffer who thinks BDSM, porn, and sex shops are just dandy things to encourage minors to check out.<\/p>\n

His headline and first sentence both matter-of-factly call it \u201cdeceptively edited,\u201d yet he never gets around to identifying our alleged deception. Maybe he\u2019s just assuming deceit has to be in there somewhere because he himself didn\u2019t pay a lot of attention to however much of the video he actually watched. See if you can spot the red flag here:<\/p>\n

In the videos,\u00a0notorious<\/a>\u00a0anti-abortion activist\u00a0Lila Rose<\/a>\u00a0poses as a 15-year-old girl and tells the counselor that her boyfriend wants to try out some of the sadomasochistic scenarios described in the popular novel, \u201cFifty Shades of Gray.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If you guessed \u201cthat\u2019s not Lila Rose in the video,\u201d give yourself a cookie. Apparently it never occurred to Gettys to either (a) wonder how one of the most popular and recognizable pro-life leaders in the country, whose face is regularly on national television and who is intensely hated by the organization she\u2019s investigating, could walk into an abortion clinic unidentified; or (b) compare the video he posted to one of Lila\u2019s recent TV appearances<\/a> to check if the voices are the same. Spoiler alert: they\u2019re not.<\/p>\n

With a falsehood that embarrassing right out of the gate, the only direction left to go is down, and fast. Here\u2019s the only point Gettys makes that\u2019s at least related to the video\u2019s content:<\/p>\n

Live Action\u00a0posted the edited videos<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which appear to leave out questions posed by the undercover activist about various sexual practices, including urinating and defecating on partners, to the unwitting counselor \u2013 and claimed Planned Parenthood workers were teaching teens about \u201ctorture sex.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Gee, if only the extended video was readily available to determine whether context confirms or contradicts the highlight reel.<\/p>\n

Oh, wait. It is. It\u2019s right there at the investigation’s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The context actually reveals that the staffer\u2019s musings on bodily functions are an entirely unsolicited part of her actively urging \u201cthoroughness\u201d in smut research. Check out this exchange starting around 7:20 (CONTENT WARNING)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: So you might have to visit a few different sites until you find something.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Some\u2014some different stuff.<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Yeah.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: OK.<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: And even on the sites, they can suggest different books, or different guides\u2014<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: OK.<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: \u2014and things like that.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Yeah. OK. So\u2014so, um, so you mentioned that, like, um, there are some, like, like, porn videos that go into that?<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Yeah.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Yeah?<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: [Laughs] Uh-huh.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Is that, like, a helpful place to\u2014to get some ideas or\u2014<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Um, you could. You could watch a video and see kind of how they execute it.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: OK.<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Yeah, absolutely.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Just to get an idea of how to do it.<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: But it\u2014I just don\u2019t want it to freak you out.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Oh, yeah, no.<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: People do really weird things. People\u2014there are so many different fetishes out there.<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Oh, really?<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Like, some guys like for women to urinate on them, or\u2014<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Oh.<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Like, uh, what is it? Deca\u2014pooping, basically, like, on them. [Laughs]<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: [Laughs] OK.<\/p>\n

PLANNED PARENTHOOD: I was trying to find the scientific word for it. But there is some really weird stuff out there\u2014which would be weird to me. For some people, that\u2019s completely normal\u2014<\/p>\n

15-YEAR-OLD: Mm-hm.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yes, using your significant other as a toilet is merely \u201cweird,\u201d and even that judgment call is relative. Nothing to worry about here; it can all be safely ignored just by repeating \u201cedited\u201d a few times. Somehow.<\/p>\n

For good measure, Gettys closes out this hit piece with a little context manipulation of his own:<\/p>\n

Rose and [conservative activist James] O\u2019Keefe have argued that, essentially, the ends justify the means in their heavily edited video \u201cexpos\u00e9s\u201d that purportedly show illegal or unethical practices by Planned Parenthood employees.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty complicated ethical issue,\u201d\u00a0O\u2019Keefe said<\/a>. \u201cBut we believe there is a genocide and nobody cares, and you can use these tactics and it\u2019s justified.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is dishonest on two levels. First it attributes an argument to Lila without any actual quote from her, and second it creates the false impression that \u201cheavy editing\u201d is the \u201ccomplicated ethical issue\u201d that O\u2019Keefe is referring to. The 2009 LA Times<\/em> piece Gettys quotes only says, \u201cO’Keefe, 24, said he and Rose have received criticism from some of their associates for using deception.\u201d<\/p>\n

To interpret that as a defense of misleading footage\u2014a preemptive admission that the videos they want people to believe shouldn\u2019t be believed<\/em>\u2014would be insane. Far more likely is that O\u2019Keefe\u2019s referring to an esoteric inter-Catholicism debate<\/a> over the morals of misrepresenting one\u2019s self to abortion workers\u2014which clearly isn\u2019t what Gettys is interested in here.<\/p>\n

We shouldn\u2019t be surprised that these people don\u2019t feel obliged to even watch videos before confidently deeming them fraudulent. They refuse to learn the science of prenatal life<\/a> before determining the fate of prenatal life, hate the idea of ensuring the choice to abort is fully informed<\/a>, and dream of criminalizing speech<\/a> that reveals things they\u2019d rather keep people ignorant about. Pro-aborts are the 21st<\/sup> century\u2019s reincarnation of the Know-Nothing Party.<\/p>\n
