{"id":51675,"date":"2014-07-10T18:08:18","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T22:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=51675"},"modified":"2014-07-11T17:09:31","modified_gmt":"2014-07-11T21:09:31","slug":"a-banner-month-for-pregnancy-centers-beleagured-by-pro-abortion-sign-language","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/a-banner-month-for-pregnancy-centers-beleagured-by-pro-abortion-sign-language\/","title":{"rendered":"A banner month for pregnancy centers beleaguered by pro-abortion sign language"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Signs of hope abound in the ongoing fight to preserve the sanctity of life in America \u2013 and one of the best signs in recent weeks has been the removal of \u2026 some signs.<\/p>\n<p>In Montgomery County, Maryland, Alliance Defending Freedom staff and allied attorneys have been fighting a law that required pro-life \u201climited-service pregnancy centers\u201d to post signs essentially advising women against using their services. The signs were required to say that a) the centers don\u2019t have a medical professional on staff, and b) the county health department advises any potential clients to speak with a licensed medical professional.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the county deliberately crafted the law so that it doesn\u2019t apply to pro-abortion centers, such as Planned Parenthood, even if counseling at those centers is offered by non-medical persons.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In March, a federal court\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancedefendingfreedom.org\/News\/PRDetail\/8905\">issued a ruling<\/a>\u00a0striking down the Montgomery County law, and on June 18, the county\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adfmedia.org\/files\/CentroTepeyacSettlement.pdf\">paid $375,000<\/a>\u00a0in attorneys\u2019 fees, costs, and nominal damages. The court\u2019s ruling cited \u201cthe lack of any evidence that the practices of [the pregnancy care centers] are causing pregnant women to be misinformed [or] negatively affecting their health.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51676\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51676\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-51676\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-28-at-1.00.33-AM-300x225.png\" alt=\"(from Alliance Defending Freedom's blog)\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-28-at-1.00.33-AM-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-28-at-1.00.33-AM.png 587w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-51676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(from Alliance Defending Freedom&#8217;s blog)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This week, a federal district court issued a similar\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adfmedia.org\/files\/AustinLifeCarePermInjFindingsFact.pdf\">ruling<\/a>\u00a0against an Austin, Texas ordinance requiring pregnancy care centers in that city to post messages encouraging women to go elsewhere. Under the law (and threats of severe fines), centers had to display multiple signs at their main entrance where women would see them before any staff had a chance to talk with them.<\/p>\n<p>The signs warned women to consider whether the center \u201cprovides medical services,\u201d has a fulltime \u201clicensed health care provider,\u201d or even a state license. The court found the city\u2019s law was too vague to use against a center offering free information and help to women.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these rulings set important precedents for other, similar ADF lawsuits pending in<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancedefendingfreedom.org\/News\/PRDetail\/9133\">Baltimore<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancedefendingfreedom.org\/News\/PRDetail\/4980\">New York City<\/a>, and possibly for a different law against pregnancy centers in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alliancedefendingfreedom.org\/News\/PRDetail\/4673\">Courts around the country<\/a>\u00a0have been striking these types of laws down, and these decisions join the growing list,\u201d says ADF Senior Legal Counsel Matt Bowman. \u201cPro-life pregnancy centers, which offer real help and real hope to women, shouldn\u2019t be punished by political allies of the abortion industry.<\/p>\n<p>No government, in a quest to achieve a political goal, should ever resort to coercing or shutting down someone else\u2019s protected speech in violation of the First Amendment. We hope these settlements will cause other governments to reconsider any efforts to enforce similar laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These important victories underscore the crucial difference God is enabling ADF staff and allied attorneys \u2013 through your prayers and support \u2013 to make in the great struggle to preserve the lives of unborn children. They also expose the real agenda of pro-abortion groups determined to manipulate the law \u2013 not out of any real concern for women\u2019s health, but out of a preoccupation with their own profits that overrides even the most basic respect for human life.
