A\u00a0lawsuit, filed by legal group Alliance Defending Freedom and allied attorneys, opposes the New Hampshire law restricting a\u00a025-foot zone of public sidewalk around the entrances of abortion clinics. The legislation is similar to a law struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court last\u00a0month.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\">New Hampshire&#8217;s law bans pro-life advocates from speaking to individuals\u00a0entering abortion clinics, but allows abortion escorts and activists to encourage women to obtain an abortion procedure.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\">\u201cThe government has no sound justification for banning free speech on public sidewalks, as the U.S. Supreme Court recently affirmed,&#8221; said\u00a0Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Legal Counsel Matt Bowman.<b>\u00a0&#8220;<\/b>Censorship zones in such places are about as clear a violation of the First Amendment as it gets.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\">In a unanimous decision last month, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down\u00a0<i><a style=\"color: #438bdf;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adfmedia.org\/News\/PRDetail\/8272\">McCullen v. Coakley<\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>a lawsuit ADF and allied attorneys filed in 2008. \u00a0The ruling\u00a0affirms that restricted speech\u00a0zones around abortion clinics violate the free speech rights of pro-life advocates.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\">In the aftermath of the decision by the nation&#8217;s highest court, Portland, Maine repealed its 39-foot zone around abortion clinics. Additional cities across the United States also halted similar buffer zone laws.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\">New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan signed the controversial measure into law last month. Under S.B. 319-FN, individuals who violate the\u00a0law will be fined a minimum of $100 and face possible\u00a0litigation.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8220;While it\u2019s good that the law has been temporarily suspended, we will continue to work toward ensuring that New Hampshire\u2019s law is permanently halted in light of the Supreme Court\u2019s decision that struck down such laws,\u201d Bowman said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #333333;\">ADF attorneys contend that the New Hampshire ban cannot stand constitutional scrutiny.\u00a0<i>Reddy v.
