In a federal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adfmedia.org\/files\/HellwegeComplaint.pdf\">lawsuit<\/a> filed by Alliance Defending Freedom, attorneys note that the human resources director of Tampa Family Health Centers questioned applicant Sara Hellwege about her involvement with\u00a0the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a pro-life organization.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When Hellwege, who\u00a0submitted an\u00a0application for a nurse-midwife position, confirmed her membership with AAPLOG, the director notified her in an\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adfmedia.org\/files\/HellwegeEmails.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #438bdf;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">e-mail<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0that she was rejected due to her involvement with the organization.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Federal and state law make it clear that being pro-abortion cannot be a prerequisite for employment, nor can federally funded facilities force nurses to assist with practices that could lead to an abortion,\u201d said Matt Bowman, Senior Legal Counsel with ADF.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Attorneys note\u00a0that the health center violated multiple federal laws by refusing Hellwege employment because of her\u00a0religious and pro-life views.\u00a0The lawsuit,<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Hellwege v. Tampa Family Health Centers<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ADF also filed complaints on behalf of Hellwege with the\u00a0Equal Employment Opportunity Commission field office in Tampa and with the Department of Health and Human Services.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Tampa Family Health Centers are federally funded.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Lato, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Willingness to commit an abortion cannot be a litmus test for employment,\u201d said ADF Senior Counsel Steven H.
