protagonist\u2019s mission to have a\u00a0nice Planned Parenthood kill her child for her as a \u201cjourney of self-discovery and empowerment.\u201d In other words, it\u2019s the usual propaganda hiding murder behind self-congratulatory euphemisms, only this time packaged in a medium where every facet of reality can be shaped to fit the narrative.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, let\u2019s see what <em>Obvious Child\u2019s<\/em> fans found most striking about the movie:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a come.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/01\/19\/jenny_slate_brings_humor_to_obvious_child_an_honest_rom_com_about_abortion\/\">Prachi Gupta, <em>Salon<\/em><\/a>: \u201can agenda.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.redeyechicago.com\/entertainment\/movies\/redeye-obvious-child-is-starmaking-and-splendid-20140611,0,3396956.column\">Matt Pais, <em>RedEye Chicago<\/em><\/a>: \u201cThat the film, my favorite of the 17 I saw at Sundance, is often cackle-inducing funny is no small achievement for something so honest.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.craveonline.com\/film\/articles\/658335-sxsw-2014-review-obvious-child\">Fred Topel, <em>CraveOnline<\/em><\/a>: \u201cThe sincere scenes are sympathetic and Herold, <em>Feministing<\/em><\/a>: \u201cWhen was the last time you saw two women talking on screen about their abortions so directly and honestly, without euphemisms, and without mentioning abortion as a polarizing political issue?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/msmagazine.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/13\/a-quintuple-f-for-obvious-child-and-thats-good-not-bad\/\">Natalie Wilson, <em>Ms. Magazine<\/em><\/a>: \u201cthe feminism of\u00a0<em>Obvious Child<\/em>\u00a0is the one so many of us live and breathe every day\u2014feminism is filled with brutally honest assessments of the world that are tinged with optimism and fuel our activism.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Huh. Over twenty different writers just happened to think the movie\u2019s \u201chonesty\u201d was a particular highlight. Imagine that.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, you\u2019d expect a cause\u2019s ideologues to have similar general sentiments about something that tells them what they want to hear. But when the same word pops up again and again, often accompanied by similar adjectives for emphasis, it\u2019s hard not to get suspicious. And then you see that NARAL and Planned Parenthood are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2014\/06\/09\/planned-parenthood-hosts-screenings-of-new-abortion-comedy-movie-obvious-child\/\">hosting screenings<\/a> of <em>Obvious Child<\/em>, and read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/mixed-media\/2014\/06\/obvious-child-interview-jenny-slate-gillian-robespierre-abortion-conservatives\">this proclamation<\/a> from PP president Cecile Richards:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Honest portrayals about abortion in film and television are extremely rare, and that&#8217;s part of a much bigger lack of honest depictions of women&#8217;s lives, health, and sexuality. This film is a major breakthrough\u2014not just because it shows a woman deciding to have an abortion but because it shows her as a full and complete person making the serious decision to end a pregnancy and still having a full and fun life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whether the honesty mantra came from some coordinated talking points (not that <a href=\"\/news\/leaked-talking-points-from-planned-parenthood\/\">PP would ever do something like that<\/a>) or simply from marinating too long in the abortion movement\u2019s hive mind, it seems an awful lot like the message to be celebrated was determined independently of the mere formality of actually watching the movie.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, to be fair we must consider the alternative, that the movie really is that darn honest. So is it? Again, let\u2019s check the words of its own fans.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew O\u2019Hehir at <em>Salon<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/06\/05\/obvious_child_an_abortion_rom_com_makes_history\/\">says outright<\/a> that \u201cabortion is not presented as a major moral dilemma,\u201d and while Elizabeth Plank at <em>PolicyMic<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.policymic.com\/articles\/90497\/the-8-biggest-lies-about-abortion-debunked-by-the-year-s-most-important-rom-com\">purports to run down<\/a> the \u201c8 Biggest Lies About Abortion, Debunked by\u201d the movie, it\u2019s telling that \u201cabortion kills\u201d isn\u2019t among them. The <em>Huffington Post\u2019s<\/em> Emma Gray <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/06\/06\/obvious-child-abortion-rom-com_n_5458557.html\">quotes<\/a> the director as saying, \u201cWe didn&#8217;t put that [judgey] character in there because we&#8217;ve seen that character, and that&#8217;s not a character I wanted to put in a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, even those above who laud its revolutionary candor all-but admit such accolades are baseless. James says it \u201chas no hand-wringing about ethics,\u201d and Hess says it \u201cnever dwells on Donna\u2019s decision.\u201d Good to know you can produce a new gold standard for truth on a controversial subject without so much as presenting, let alone addressing, the entire reason it\u2019s controversial in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>The key to understanding the disconnect lies in another recurring thread in these reviews. To them, <em>Obvious Child<\/em> counters a perceived excess of characters choosing life; <em>Knocked Up<\/em> is a repeat target because its protagonists found abortion unthinkable\u2014per Michelle Goldberg, it \u201casked us to believe that the ambitious professional played by Katherine Heigl never so much as pondered ending a pregnancy resulting from a drunken one-night-stand with a schlubby loser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They love the movie not for actually exploring the reality of abortion, but for giving them the reality they\u2019d prefer. It paints a comforting illusion that Donna\u2019s experience is all there is to abortion\u2014no ethics to bother with, no son or daughter to consider, no violence to confront. Just one of those things you do when an evening takes a wrong turn. Perhaps by laying the \u201chonesty\u201d talk on so thick, they\u2019re above all trying to convince themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, their fantasy world can never be, because you can\u2019t simply write out abortion\u2019s most interested party. To most of us, the baby\u2019s presence is, well, <em>obvious<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That may be the most remarkable thing about <em>Obvious Child<\/em>: not the innate repulsiveness that such a thing as an \u201cabortion comedy\u201d exists, but that the filmmakers chose a title that couldn\u2019t be more self-defeating than if it pro-lifers named it ourselves. They may have meant it to reference a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9HKNAhAxMAk\">Paul Simon song<\/a> and their main character not being ready for parenthood, but all they really did was saddle their movie with a two-word summary of its own fundamental dishonesty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So who\u2019s up for an \u201cabortion comedy\u201d?
