After a conference in Toronto this month,\u00a0Melinda Gates wrote<\/a>\u00a0on the Foundation’s website that\u00a0because of the controversy around the topic,\u00a0“the Gates Foundation has decided not to fund abortion.”<\/span><\/p>\n

But is it true? Does\u00a0the Gates Foundation really refrain from funding abortion around the world?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Father Shenan J. Boquet, president of Human Life International called the statement “outright deception.” Fr. Boquet notes that,\u00a0\u201cThe Gates Foundation has in the past and will continue to give tens of millions of dollars to the largest abortion providers in the world, including International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International. These large sums of money will undoubtedly expand the reach and influence of the abortion industry.”<\/p>\n

According to the Gates Foundation\u00a0grant database, the Foundation gave Planned Parenthood of America, the\u00a0International Planned Parenthood Federation, and Planned Parenthood of Western Washington about $71 million<\/a> from before 2009 through 2013.\u00a0Additionally, the Gates Foundation gave $46.1 million<\/a> to Marie Stopes International in 2012 alone.<\/p>\n

Much of this giving is focused on Africa, Asia, and Latin America<\/a>, where abortion-providers like\u00a0Planned Parenthood, Marie Stopes, and Ipas seek to overturn pro-life laws and sometimes even provide illicit abortion drugs.<\/p>\n

While Gates Foundation funds cannot be\u00a0earmarked for abortion, the fungibility of money\u00a0makes it easier for these organizations to provide abortion internationally. \u00a0In other words, every dollar the\u00a0Gates Foundation gives to Planned Parenthood for distributing birth control or building an abortion-friendly clinic\u00a0frees up a dollar in Planned Parenthood’s budget to spend elsewhere.<\/p>\n

If aid is fungible, it simply does not matter what donors finance. T<\/span>hey may end up financing, at the margin, very different and perhaps undesirable activities. When the recipients of these funds are the world’s leading abortion providers, it’s not hard to figure out where newly freed\u00a0money in their budgets\u00a0will go.<\/p>\n

The Gates family has long been intertwined with Planned Parenthood. In a 2003 interview with Bill Moyers<\/a>, Bill Gates recalled, “When I was growing up, my parents were almost involved in various volunteer things. My dad was head of Planned Parenthood.<\/em> And it was very controversial to be involved with that. And so it’s fascinating. At the dinner table my parents are very good at sharing the things that they were doing. And almost treating us like adults, talking about that.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not the first time Melinda Gates has eschewed the Foundation’s links to abortion in\u00a0the media. In a 2012 interview with Newsweek<\/em>,<\/a> she declared that “From the very beginning, we said that as a foundation we will not support abortion, because we don\u2019t believe in funding it.”\u00a0At that time she branded her global health initiative “No Controversy,” assuring pledge-givers that \u201cThis is not about abortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0platform included partnering<\/a> with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for implementation. The UNFPA has long been under fire for helping to administer China’s brutal “one-child policy” which forces women to undergo abortion and sterilization.<\/span><\/p>\n

At a 2013 “No Controversy” conference<\/a> hosted by the Gates Foundation in Ethiopia, workshops for the nearly 3,000 participants prominently featured abortion! \u00a0Sessions led by representatives from Planned Parenthood, Marie Stopes, and Ipas included \u201cEfforts to Implement Policies that Expand Access to Safe Abortion,\u201d \u201cAccess to Safe Abortions,\u201d \u201cAbortion and Quality of Care,\u201d and \u201cAbortion: Before and After.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to C-FAM, “Abortion [was] also the topic of two of the five poster exhibits and several ‘topical roundtables,’ including an Ipas-chaired discussion promoting the World Health Organization\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>problematic<\/a>\u00a0guid<\/span>elines on how to do abortions.”<\/p>\n

At the July 2013 Women Deliver conference<\/a>, which was\u00a0co-sponsored by the Gates Foundation, Melinda Gates shared the platform with late-term abortionist Leroy Carhart<\/a>, pro-infanticide ethicist Peter Singer, and then-HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.<\/p>\n

So much for “No Controversy!”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Father Boquet and other pro-life groups also contend that the Gates Foundation promotes not only contraception, but also abortifacients that end human life at its earliest stages.<\/p>\n

Fr. Boquet\u00a0said<\/a>,\u00a0“While Ms. Gates claims to only be focused on contraceptives, what is often not discussed in public about these drugs and devices\u2014and certainly not disclosed to the women in the developing world who receive Ms. Gates\u2019 contraceptives\u2014is their potential to cause abortions at the earliest stage of pregnancy. Conception can still, and often does, occur even when these methods are being used, and that new life in the womb is then destroyed due to their effects on a woman\u2019s body.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Melinda Gates hopes to raise<\/a> $4 billion by 2020 to supply various forms of contraception and birth control, including abortifacients,\u00a0to 120 million more women in the developing world.<\/p>\n

It’s clear that the Gates Foundation is inextricably linked with the global abortion industry. Until they repudiate their funding of Planned Parenthood, Marie Stopes, and Ipas; and cancel their support for abortifacients in the Third World, it’s impossible to claim that the Gates Foundation\u00a0is free from the stain of abortion.<\/p>\n
