{"id":50289,"date":"2014-06-06T08:23:20","date_gmt":"2014-06-06T12:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=50289"},"modified":"2014-06-06T08:23:20","modified_gmt":"2014-06-06T12:23:20","slug":"with-9th-circuit-decision-fda-protocol-for-ru-486-no-longer-mandated-in-arizona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/with-9th-circuit-decision-fda-protocol-for-ru-486-no-longer-mandated-in-arizona\/","title":{"rendered":"With 9th Circuit decision, FDA protocol for RU-486 no longer mandated in Arizona"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/wireStory\/arizona-abortion-restrictions-remain-blocked-23976523?page=1\">blocked<\/a>\u00a0a law that held abortionists in Arizona to the FDA protocol for dispensing the RU-486 abortion drug (aka &#8220;medication abortion,&#8221; or chemical abortion&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>The 9th Circuit is one of the most liberal circuit courts when it comes to abortion; the <a href=\"http:\/\/aclj.org\/abortion\/right-to-self-abort-ninth-circuit-gets-cagey\">same court<\/a> encompasses the rabidly anti-life state of California. A federal judge had previously <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/04\/01\/us\/politics\/judge-wont-block-rules-on-abortion-drugs.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;_r=3\">upheld<\/a> the law, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/wireStory\/arizona-abortion-restrictions-remain-blocked-23976523?page=2\">precedent<\/a>\u00a0has been established for circuit courts (i.e., the 5th and 6th circuits) to uphold FDA protocol on chemical abortion procedure. Nevertheless,\u00a0in this case the\u00a09th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the 2012 law holding abortion mills in Arizona\u00a0to the same standard.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a chemical abortion, a pregnant mother is administered a combination of pills which act to first starve her unborn child and then expel him or her, lifeless, from the mother&#8217;s body. This abortion process takes time and carries <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/ru-486-abortions-lead-to-14-maternal-deaths-2207-adverse-effects-fda-report\">significant risks<\/a> (including maternal death). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drugsafety\/postmarketdrugsafetyinformationforpatientsandproviders\/ucm111323.htm\">FDA protocol<\/a> therefore mandates that a physician must administer the drug in-person. Read more about the function of the RU-486 (which is different from <a href=\"\/news\/studies-show-all-forms-of-emergency-contraception-cause-abortion\/\">emergency contraception<\/a>) <a href=\"\/news\/ru-486-reversal-gives-hope-to-women-who-change-their-minds\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion advocates continue to <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2014\/06\/03\/3444439\/arizona-medication-abortion-win\/\">decry common-sense safety regulations<\/a> on any type of abortion, including chemical abortion, claiming they are safe and essentially harmless. A cursory look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drugsafety\/postmarketdrugsafetyinformationforpatientsandproviders\/ucm111323.htm\">FDA safety information<\/a> for the drug, however, suggests a grim reality with which these proponents are out-of-touch:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As previously reported by the agency, several of the women who died in the United States died from sepsis (severe illness caused by infection of the bloodstream) after medical abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol.\u00a0 Sepsis is a known risk related to any type of abortion.\u00a0 Most of these women were infected with the same type of bacteria,\u00a0 known as\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #000000;\">Clostridium sordellii<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Many abortion mills have adopted a dangerous &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationrescue.org\/archives\/special-report-telemed-abortions-endanger-women-and-drive-up-insurance-costs\/\">telemed<\/a>&#8221; business, whereby\u00a0a woman is given the drug\u00a0after seeing an \u00a0abortionist &#8212; in some other location &#8212; appear on a video screen.
