For International Women\u2019s Day, Hillary Clinton recently spoke at the UN calling for a right to abortion and making development money contingent on abortion<\/a>.\u00a0She couched her \u201cthin the herd\u201d mentality as essential to both women\u2019s progress and escape from poverty:\u00a0 \u201cThere is one lesson from the past, in particular, that we cannot afford to ignore: You cannot make progress on gender equality or broader human development, without safeguarding women\u2019s reproductive health and rights.\u00a0 That is a bedrock truth<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is abortion our “one lesson?” Does abortion end poverty? Do those unplanned pregnancies get in the way of \u201cgender equality\u201d and \u201chuman development.\u201d\u00a0 What about overpopulation?\u00a0 Whoa, you say, that\u2019s serious. That’s one lesson, you say.<\/p>\n

What has such a singular focus achieved?\u00a0 Feng Jianmei<\/a>\u00a0 is one of an estimated 1.3 million women each year who are subjected to forced abortion in China, a terrible\u00a0<\/span>human rights abuse<\/a> stemming from the one-solution mentality Clinton proposes.<\/span><\/p>\n

By advancing abortion at the UN, Hillary Clinton throws her weight behind abortion as the one way to advance women\u2019s rights and solve the world\u2019s problems.\u00a0\u00a0 Eliminating poverty is equated with eliminating the offspring of the poor, who are those most affected by China\u2019s one-child policy. Yet abortion is nowhere proven to solve a single women\u2019s health issue; in fact, it generates<\/a> a myriad of problems<\/a>.\u00a0Can someone please ask the dour Neo-Malthusians who dominate in our college classrooms and politics to prove their claim of global overpopulation as distinguished from plain old overcrowding in urban areas?\u00a0 Studies of demographics actually suggest that a more accurate image than explosion would be implosion<\/em> – a “demographic winter<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

Our\u00a0id\u00e9e fixe<\/a> is overpopulation; under-touted is the fact that overpopulation\u2019s \u201cbomb\u201d never detonated<\/a>,\u00a0as originally predicted by professional alarmist Paul Ehrlich in the 60s.\u00a0Arrogant and condescending, Ehrlich predicted mass starvation while calling for abortion on demand and sterilization in the water supply. A significant influence on the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade was overpopulation, but Ehrlich’s claims have never been proved.<\/p>\n

In a YouTube video called \u201cUrbanization: Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad City<\/a>,\u201d the Population Research Institute makes the point that overpopulation has yet to be defined, much less proven.\u00a0Attending a rock concert can give the impression the world is over populated.\u00a0 It is more helpful to look at such problems as congestion in urban areas and inadequate distribution of resources as multiple sources of the problem instead of simplistically equating poverty and abortion.<\/p>\n

Speaking of rock icons, John Lennon called overpopulation a \u201cjoke\u201d and a \u201cmyth\u201d in his 1971 Dick Cavett interview.\u00a0 Despite Lennon\u2019s hit \u201cImagine\u201d of the same year, which serves up a utopian, even communist vision, Lennon\u2019s remarks and his rejection of abortion show he sees through the smug and stingy attitude that says: \u201cOh, well, there\u2019s enough of us, so we won\u2019t have any more. Don\u2019t let anyone else live.\u201d<\/p>\n
