{"id":46981,"date":"2014-03-03T03:02:08","date_gmt":"2014-03-03T08:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=46981"},"modified":"2014-03-07T10:45:33","modified_gmt":"2014-03-07T15:45:33","slug":"pro-aborts-vilify-va-republican-for-taking-their-own-rhetoric-to-its-logical-conclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-aborts-vilify-va-republican-for-taking-their-own-rhetoric-to-its-logical-conclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-aborts vilify VA Republican for taking their own rhetoric to its logical conclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-46982\" style=\"margin-left: 15px;\" alt=\"Hypocrisy Meter\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hypocrisy-Meter.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hypocrisy-Meter.jpg 250w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hypocrisy-Meter-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Nothing makes pro-aborts happier than exploiting badly phrased statements from their enemies, and this week they found a new comment to freak out about in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/steve.martin.33633\/posts\/10202397875062315?stream_ref=10\">Facebook post<\/a> by Virginia Republican state Senator Steve Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the post is actually quite good, responding to a vile \u201cValentine\u201d from the Virginia Pro-Choice Coalition that, as Martin points out, hides the murder of our young under euphemisms about \u201craising healthy children\u201d and \u201caccess to healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But one ill-chosen word was enough to make the media reaction all about him rather than VPCC\u2019s sick priorities:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can count on me to never get in the way of you &#8220;preventing&#8221; an unintentional pregnancy.&#8221; I&#8217;m not actually sure what that means, because if it&#8217;s &#8220;unintentional&#8221; you must have been trying to prevent it. And, I don&#8217;t expect to be in the room or will I do anything to prevent you from obtaining a contraceptive. However, once a child does exist in your womb, I&#8217;m not going to assume a right to kill it just because <strong>the child\u2019s host (some refer to them as mothers)<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t want it to remain alive. <em>[Emphasis added.]<!--more--><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Martin has since changed \u201cchild\u2019s host\u201d to \u201cbearer of the child,\u201d but that was more than enough for the professional liars and prenatal execution enthusiasts to go to work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The state Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vademocrats.org\/news\/press\/va-tea-party-senator-refers-pregnant-women-just-host\">claim<\/a> that \u201chost\u201d is all Martin thinks pregnant women are.<\/li>\n<li>Under a headline that disingenuously adds &#8220;just&#8221; to &#8220;a host,&#8221; the <em>Huffington Post<\/em>&#8216;s Laura Bassett <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/02\/24\/steve-martin-virginia_n_4847959.html?view=print&amp;comm_ref=false\">reports<\/a> that NARAL Virginia\u2019s Tarina Keene said it showed pro-life politicians\u2019 \u201ccontempt\u201d for pregnant women, whom they consider \u201cno more than vessels.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Virginia\u2019s Planned Parenthood is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PPAVirginia\/posts\/10202633821942935?stream_ref=10\">pushing<\/a> \u201cNOT A HOST\u201d t-shirts.<\/li>\n<li>Emily\u2019s List is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jammiewf.com\/2014\/democrat-strategist-instead-of-fearing-sexist-attacks-we-wait-gleefully-for-the-next-one\/\">launching<\/a> a \u201cPregnant Women Are Not \u2018Hosts\u2019\u201d fundraising campaign.<\/li>\n<li>A supposed news piece by Amy Chozick in the <em>New York Times<\/em> matter-of-factly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/28\/us\/politics\/outrage-over-sexist-remarks-turns-into-a-political-fund-raising-tool.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;_r=2\">groups<\/a> Martin&#8217;s words with \u201csexist remarks\u201d in her headline.<\/li>\n<li>Several of Martin\u2019s leftist female colleagues <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2014\/02\/25\/1280333\/-Video-VA-Senators-Blast-Sen-Steve-Martin-for-Misogynistic-Demeaning-Remarks-Towards-Women\">browbeat<\/a> him for alleged \u201cmisogyny\u201d and \u201cdegradation of women.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>MSNBC\u2019s Alex Wagner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/now-with-alex-wagner\/watch\/alex-a-pregnant-woman-is-not-simply-a-host-168604739995?cid=sm_twitter_video\">lectured<\/a> Martin that pregnant women are people, too, a fact Martin&#8217;s \u201ccruel, hateful terms\u201d supposedly denied.<\/li>\n<li>Amanda Marcotte is predictably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2014\/02\/24\/steve_martin_of_virginia_on_abortion_state_senator_calls_pregnant_women.html\">yammering<\/a> about how this \u201cconfirms every worst suspicion that pro-choicers have about abortion opponents.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Jezebel\u2019s Callie Beusman <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/virginia-lawmaker-refers-to-pregnant-women-as-hosts-1529944149\">is<\/a> \u201cnot sure if there&#8217;s any way for someone to be more blatantly express his contempt for women\u201d (though to be fair, lots of Jezebel personnel are unsure of things that are pretty easy for the rest of us to figure out).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In truth, the substance of the matter is nothing of the kind. Martin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2014\/02\/virginia-state-sen-steve-martin-abortion-facebook-103862.html?hp=l4\">explained<\/a> to <em>Politico<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From the beginning was playing their argument back to them. You\u2019ll even notice the parenthetical statement that some call them mothers because I consider them mothers not hosts, so that\u2019s not my argument that\u2019s their argument. If you\u2019re going to say that it\u2019s my body, and if it\u2019s in my body for a period of time, I can treat it how I want, then you\u2019re the one arguing that you\u2019re just a host.<\/p>\n<p>Since they took that out of context, I said alright, I\u2019ve already made it pretty clear since I said calling them mothers, I changed it to bearer of the children. But I\u2019d be happy to change it back. I think that the way in which they turned that and somehow used this as both a Valentine\u2019s card issue and then to turn around say that I\u2019m calling mothers and children who bear children hosts I think is a bit of twisting of the facts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He\u2019s absolutely right: abortion\u2019s defenders are the ones regularly <a href=\"\/news\/?s=parasite\">calling<\/a> the innocent, living human babies in the womb \u201cparasites,\u201d which sounds to me a heck of a lot more dehumanizing than \u201chost,\u201d and they clearly don\u2019t think creating a new son or daughter inside yourself necessarily makes you a mother (in fact, our old adversary Robin Marty reacted to the story by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.care2.com\/causes\/virginia-lawmaker-calls-pregnant-women-hosts-and-thats-a-good-thing.html\">arguing exactly that<\/a>). And what\u2019s technically the proper term for the organism in which a parasite resides? You guessed it &#8211; \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/medlineplus\/host\">host<\/a>\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>Considering the high esteem in which they (<a href=\"\/news\/paging-mr-science-guy-embryology-denialism-in-desperate-need-of-debunking\/\">pretend to<\/a>) hold science, pro-aborts should know that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/gallery\/mg20327161300-enemy-within-human-parasites\">human beings can be hosts to parasites<\/a>, so logically the term can\u2019t be dehumanizing &#8211; especially as long as they continue to tolerate their own members using the \u201cparasite\u201d analogy. And considering their tendency to freak out about \u201cmedically accurate terminology\u201d if you call the unborn anything more affectionate than \u201czygote,\u201d \u201cembryo,\u201d or \u201cfetus,\u201d they really have no standing to object to Martin\u2019s phrasing. The glossary-police shtick cuts both ways.<\/p>\n<p>Put another way: no, I don\u2019t consider pregnant women hosts. But I don\u2019t consider their gestating sons and daughters parasites, either. And if we did accept the latter, that would unavoidably and inarguably require us to accept the former, too.<\/p>\n<p>Semantics aside, Senator Martin is completely correct on the merits. Unfortunately, having truth and reason on your side isn\u2019t enough with a media playing field so skewed against us and unethical, insincere opponents who have abandoned all pretense of good faith and are willing to use a single word as an excuse to assassinate your character if you don\u2019t spell out exactly what you do and don\u2019t mean.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an outrage that pro-life politicians have to jump through such hoops for the simple courtesy of (maybe) not being defamed, but that\u2019s the world we live in. Step One of taking it back: anticipate the enemy\u2019s favorite smears. Step Two: fortify your language in advance to not only pre-empt them, but turn the tables.
