{"id":46643,"date":"2014-02-22T14:58:05","date_gmt":"2014-02-22T19:58:05","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=46643"},"modified":"2014-02-21T16:16:20","modified_gmt":"2014-02-21T21:16:20","slug":"what-the-un-report-on-north-korea-reveals-about-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/what-the-un-report-on-north-korea-reveals-about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"What the UN Report on North Korea reveals about us"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The Western world is understandably horrified at the UN\u2019s recent and very thorough <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/CoIDPRK\/Pages\/ReportoftheCommissionofInquiryDPRK.aspx\">report<\/a> on the <a href=\"\/news\/breaking-united-nations-report-finds-unparalleled-human-rights-abuses-in-north-korea\/\">unparalleled human rights abuses<\/a> taking place in North Korea, including <a href=\"\/news\/less-than-human-north-koreas-rampant-forced-abortions-sterilizations-infanticide-and-persecution-of-the-disabled\/\">widespread forced abortions and infanticide<\/a>.\u00a0 We ought to be. \u00a0It is horrific.\u00a0 It is evil.\u00a0 It causes any person with a remnant of empathy and moral sensibility cry out \u201chow can a human being do <i>this<\/i> to another human?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a question that ought to cause deep introspection in our civilized culture, because at the root of every good or evil deed is a thought process, a worldview, an ideology, that drives a person to act.\u00a0 Dear America, can I plead with you to examine our own beliefs and consider, <i>are we not far behind?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>What is taking place in North Korea is made possible by a mindset and a belief system that deadens the conscience of the actors, that makes them believe they are justified and right in what they are doing, despite the undeniable suffering taking place right before their eyes.\u00a0 Changing the mindset and ideology is the only way to cause such a large group of people (be it soldier or citizen) to accept what is taking place as being necessary, or even right.\u00a0 Necessary or right, for one of three reasons:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><i>Some other greater good is being accomplished<\/i>.\u00a0 Perhaps a more stable society, perhaps more security, perhaps the development of needed medicines, or means of defense.\u00a0 Whatever the \u201cgoal\u201d is, the benefit produced outweighs the cost of reaching that goal.<\/li>\n<li><i>Someone else\u2019s needs or rights have higher priority<\/i>.\u00a0 Maybe due to the benefit the other person give to society, maybe by virtue of their intellect, cognition, age, or strength.\u00a0 For whatever reason, the actor merits more consideration than the victim.<\/li>\n<li><i>The victim has a status of less than, or is not, a human person<\/i>.\u00a0 Possibly because of societal status, possibly because of illness, injury, age, lack of capacity. Whatever the rationale, what is done to the victim is permissible, even if the same action would not be permitted against someone else, on the basis that the victim is a non-person, and the other party is.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dear America, do you hear the ideas that have lead to today\u2019s North Korea?\u00a0 <i>Do they sound familiar?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Because that is us.\u00a0 We may not yet have \u201coff the record\u201d medical facilities where people are taken for experimentation, but <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/selling-unborn-babies-the-reality-of-fetal-tissue-research\/\">we <i>are <\/i>using people for medical research.<\/a>\u00a0 We may revile the state of the North Korean hospitals, but when we grant medical licenses to \u201cdoctors\u201d who have <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/category\/articles\/what-to-do-with-the-bodies\/the-selling-of-baby-body-parts\/\">advocated for using some of society\u2019s most defenseless as a source for organs and tissue<\/a>, and have even gone so far as to harvest organs from living human beings, we become merely a more sterilized version of the DPRK.<\/p>\n<p>We may act horrified at the murder of a newborn, but when we place <a href=\"http:\/\/jme.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2012\/03\/01\/medethics-2011-100411.full\">articles<\/a> advocating for the ability to kill infants in prominent places in academic journals, because it represents an academically and morally permissible viewpoint worth considering, we give credence to the worldview that allows such atrocities to persist. We may not embrace the <i>actions<\/i> of the North Korean guards, but when tenure and revere professors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/articles\/199901\/living-and-dying-peter-singer\">argue for<\/a> using the mentally-handicapped as science experiments, we embrace their <i>ideas<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Dear America, we already slaughter our citizens.\u00a0 We do it with chemicals.\u00a0 We do it with knives.\u00a0 We do it by suffocating them.\u00a0 We already burn the corpses of the victims, and the smoke from their bodies rises.\u00a0 And we say it is alright, even good. \u00a0We say it is necessary.<\/p>\n<p>We say the mother\u2019s needs or rights are of more value than her unborn child\u2019s.\u00a0 And increasingly, we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/01\/23\/so_what_if_abortion_ends_life\/\">fully acknowledge<\/a> that the baby is a human life, we just assuage our consciences by saying they \u201caren\u2019t a person\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We are able to be horrified at North Korea because right now, we are living in a world full of moral inconsistency.\u00a0 One where we cannot yet bring ourselves to fully act upon the beliefs we espouse, yet because we persist in them, we are powerless to stop the oncoming storm.\u00a0 We believe it will \u201cnever be us,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/brave-new-world-creating-human-life-for-body-parts-and-experiments\/\">except that it already is<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the pages of the UN Report, we meet Kim Jong-un and his regime.\u00a0 But Kim is not the enemy.\u00a0 Not really.\u00a0 The enemy is the worldview, the mindset, the ideology, that perpetuates and allows such rampant evil to occur.\u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps today, America will be willing to examine that deeper foundation.\u00a0 Perhaps America will do so, and take a look in the mirror.\u00a0 Because if we do, we must acknowledge, as the famous quote goes, \u201cWe have met the enemy, and he is us.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Western world is understandably horrified at the UN\u2019s recent and very thorough report on the unparalleled human rights abuses taking place in North Korea, including widespread forced abortions and infanticide.\u00a0 We ought to be. \u00a0It is horrific.\u00a0 It is evil.\u00a0 It causes any person with a remnant of empathy and moral sensibility cry out [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":228,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false},"categories":[15],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.7 -
