{"id":45393,"date":"2014-01-24T16:25:39","date_gmt":"2014-01-24T21:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=45393"},"modified":"2014-01-24T16:28:24","modified_gmt":"2014-01-24T21:28:24","slug":"what-happens-when-theres-no-one-left-to-speak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/what-happens-when-theres-no-one-left-to-speak\/","title":{"rendered":"What happens when there\u2019s no one left to speak?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat from New York, made remarks that set a new low for pro-abortion politicians. Cuomo referred to those he considers \u201cextreme conservatives\u201d &#8211; for holding the pro-life position, amongst other views &#8211; saying they \u201chave no place in New York, because that\u2019s not who New Yorkers are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a New Yorker, I have <a href=\"\/news\/how-should-we-regard-my-home-state-of-new-york\/\">conflicted thoughts<\/a> about my home state. \u00a0While I love New York, I wanted to leave my pro-abortion home state for somewhere where my views were better represented. In light of Cuomo&#8217;s remarks, how am I supposed to feel, if not unwelcome and not accepted?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The state is making a new name for itself. Thankfully, the governor\u2019s powers are limited. We are not in a dictatorship where the governor is allowed to kick out those who don\u2019t agree with him. Cuomo has the privilege of being a democratically elected servant, and he holds the highest position in the state. But he does not have the authority to dictate who is a New Yorker and who is not.<\/p>\n<p>Cuomo was able to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/11\/02\/AR2010110207029.html\">win his governor\u2019s race in 2010 at 61%<\/a>, as <i>The Washington Post <\/i>documented. <i>The Washington Post<\/i> also listed him as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-fix\/post\/the-nations-10-most-popular-governors--and-why\/2012\/04\/11\/gIQA9dlzAT_blog.html\">the most popular governor<\/a> in the country. A January 21 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/369010\/who-new-yorkers-are-editors\">piece<\/a> from the editors of<i> National Review Online <\/i>shows, though, that most New Yorkers do not hold the same views as Cuomo on late-term abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The governor should never stop trying to better represent all in his state, especially if he has further political aspirations, and thus should not shy away from working across the aisle with his opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of working with Republicans, Cuomo blames them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You have a schism within the Republican Party. \u2026 They\u2019re searching to define their soul, that\u2019s what\u2019s going on. Is the Republican party in this state a moderate party or is it an extreme conservative party? That\u2019s what they\u2019re trying to figure out. It\u2019s a mirror of what\u2019s going on in Washington. The gridlock in Washington is less about Democrats and Republicans. It\u2019s more about extreme Republicans versus moderate Republicans.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The governor provides an example of politicians who do not look to build unity with the other side, but rather point fingers. How can the governor expect to achieve common ground then with Republicans in his Assembly and Senate?<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn Jean Lopez cleverly titles her commentary for <i>National Review Online<\/i> \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/368829\/andrew-cuomo-puts-catholics-need-not-reside-sign-new-york-kathryn-jean-lopez\">Andrew Cuomo Puts Up a \u2018Catholics Need Not Reside\u2019 Sign in New York<\/a>.\u201d While the governor\u2019s comments affect Catholics, the irony should not be lost as to how Andrew Cuomo considers himself Catholic, a denomination quite vocal in its pro-life teachings.<\/p>\n<p>Americans must not let this issue go quietly. We cannot let the governor get away with making his state such an intolerant one for those with opposing views. Those whom Cuomo considers \u201cextreme conservatives\u201d may feel unwelcome enough to leave, but how else are we to hold our public officials accountable?<\/p>\n<p>It is one thing for an elected official to be pro-abortion. But this isn\u2019t about the issue of pro-choice versus pro-life. This is the new low to which those in power will go to not only carelessly offend their opponents, but to demonize them. The unborn are already considered second-class citizens in our nation, especially in New York State. Abortion rates here are already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/ss6108a1.htm?s_cid=ss6108a1_w\">double the national average of abortions, and triple in New York City<\/a>. It would be nice if their defenders weren\u2019t also regarded as second-class citizens.
