I confess, I\u2019ve occasionally questioned how much good I\u2019m really doing writing about the subject online.<\/p>\n

Ironically, I\u2019ve found relief from such thoughts while, of all things, surfing pro-abortion blogs. We\u2019ve discussed before<\/a> the increasing popularity of the superficially appealing but substantively bankrupt \u201cbodily autonomy\u201d argument for abortion. At the beginning of the year, Salon<\/em>\u2019s Mary Elizabeth Williams penned<\/a> her notable \u201cSo what if abortion ends life?\u201d column using that rationale, and lately I\u2019ve really been struck by how the Tumblr baby-killing community seems to have adopted it as a trump card.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, That\u2019s not how Abortion Is\u201d (last seen bringing this cornucopia of crazy<\/a> to our attention) gives us this gem<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Why should a fetus be entitled to someone else\u2019s body parts? No one else is. What makes a fetus so special? It\u2019s human, and like all other humans it has no right to other people\u2019s body parts without the owner\u2019s continuous consent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Meanwhile, \u201cWorry About Your Own Uterus\u201d says<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I do believe that even if fetuses\u00a0were\u00a0considered people, abortion would still not be murder. No person has rights over another\u2019s body.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

In the words<\/a> of \u201cValhalla Heroine\u201d:<\/p>\n

Fetuses do not have bodily autonomy, in fact they are an intrusive violation of bodily autonomy<\/strong>, that is why abortion is legal, that is why abortion is medically necessary for the people who want\/need it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cA Blog About Choice\u201d proclaims<\/a>:<\/p>\n

[F]orcing someone out of your body who you do not consent to being there in the first place is not murder, even though it means they die.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYour Culture of Death Is My Culture of Choice\u201d makes this<\/a> less than original comparison:<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t be forced to give an organ, even if it leads to a death. Just like you can\u2019t be forced to use your body as an incubator, even if it leads to the death of a fetus. I honestly see very little difference.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cHow \u2018Pro-Life\u2019 of You\u201d follows suit<\/a>:<\/p>\n

[I]f I\u2019m dying of kidney failure, am I allowed to force you to give me a kidney because it would save my life? (come on, you only need one to live and I have a right to life, don\u2019t I?) nope, because you have bodily autonomy – no one is allowed to use another\u2019s body against their consent. fetuses directly impose on another person\u2019s bodily autonomy by using their organs and resources.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYour Lies Ruin Lives\u201d offers<\/a> a similar analogy:<\/p>\n

There are laws dictating if you don\u2019t want someone in your home, you can remove them. Have them removed, yes. Most states even have provisions for perceived threat and removal via deadly force. (Read; Stand your Ground laws.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Speaking of originality, in responding to a comment in the same thread, \u201cRights for All\u201d (how\u2019s that for an Orwellian name?) says<\/a> basically the same thing:<\/p>\n

Actually, in America if you come into my house without consent and you do not leave, i’m fairly certain i can make you leave by force.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And a post by \u201cWe Have a Voice\u201d frames<\/a> it in a way that helpfully sets up my broader point:<\/p>\n

I pity the fool who still thinks pro-choicers believe a fetus isn\u2019t alive.<\/p>\n

To bring you up-to-date on the abortion conversation: yes, a fetus is alive and yes, it is human. That still doesn\u2019t grant them rights over another person\u2019s body.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And on and on it goes. Naturally, it\u2019s still peppered with appeals to invalid<\/a> killability criteria<\/a> like viability, pain sensitivity, and awareness, plus bogus<\/a> complaints about \u201cbaby\u201d somehow being invalid terminology, but it\u2019s bodily autonomy that they lean on most heavily, apparently so convinced that it irrefutably ends the debate that they don\u2019t need to care how callously they phrase it.<\/p>\n

Never mind<\/a> that the mother put her helpless son or daughter in that situation, or that it is her son or daughter we\u2019re talking about, one half of the closest of all human relationships, with a natural claim to the process required for any life to enter the world, utterly incomparable to any arbitrary and convoluted scenario<\/a> pro-aborts can manufacture. As far as they\u2019re concerned, the subject is closed<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And they\u2019re angling for it to replace denying the humanity of the unborn, sometimes, as the last quote shows, by by going so far as to sneer that everybody<\/em> on their side knows a fetus is human.<\/p>\n

You\u2019d think that would be their favorite defense; I know I certainly wouldn\u2019t be here if I didn\u2019t think abortion destroyed a living human being.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re an abortion apologist, why would you possibly concede that ground? Why would anyone leave the seemingly humane \u201cdon\u2019t worry, abortion only terminates some cellular matter\u201d for the monstrous-sounding \u201csure it\u2019s a live human, but here\u2019s why I should be able to kill it anyway\u201d?<\/p>\n

Because they have to. Bit by bit, we\u2019re driving them out of embryology denial. Aided by the latest in sonogram technology, pro-lifers have spread the irrefutable facts<\/a> of life\u2019s beginnings far enough that more and more of them are waking up to the fact that they simply can\u2019t get away with it if they expect to be taken seriously.<\/p>\n

The rhetorical battlefields of the blogosphere may not be the only front in this war, or even the most important, but they matter. And we\u2019re winning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
