{"id":42804,"date":"2013-11-08T18:00:40","date_gmt":"2013-11-08T23:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=42804"},"modified":"2013-11-12T09:39:00","modified_gmt":"2013-11-12T14:39:00","slug":"school-of-social-work-parts-ways-with-national-association-of-social-workers-over-abortion-promotion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/school-of-social-work-parts-ways-with-national-association-of-social-workers-over-abortion-promotion\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Social Work parts ways with National Association of Social Workers over abortion promotion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In the Issues statement of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialworkers.org\/resources\/abstracts\/policies\/familyPlanning.pdf\">Family Planning and Reproductive Choice<\/a>, the National Association of Social Workers endorses abortion, stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[\u2026]Social workers [\u2026] have a professional obligation to work [\u2026] to establish, secure funding for, and safeguard family planning and reproductive health programs, including abortion services[.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If a social worker doesn\u2019t want to promote, secure funding for, or \u201csafeguard\u201d abortion in America, NASW claims that he or she don\u2019t have to, but such objectors must then tell clients that they offer \u201climited\u201d services and then find clients someone who will offer to connect them with abortion services.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the NASW\u2019s strong, unwavering support of abortion, the Catholic University School of Social Work has severed ties with the group. Will Rainford, named dean of the National Catholic School of Social Service just this year, told students about this decision via an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SocialWorkersRJ\/status\/392677934097367040\/photo\/1\">e-mail<\/a>. In that e-mail he writes that \u201csuch a concrete and public declaration by an institution is completely incongruent with Catholic Tradition and this renders the organization out of bounds for the school as an institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As a Catholic school, Catholic University should in no way be affiliated with any group who supports the killing of millions of innocent people, just because it isn\u2019t currently against the law. NASW doesn\u2019t just tell social workers that they must support abortion; the group works hard to support it in any way possible. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/chronicleofsocialchange.org\/news\/university-ends-relationship-with-social-work-group-over-abortion-position\/4216\">Chronicles of Social Change<\/a>, NASW members pay $190 a year, and undergrads and Master\u2019s students pay $48 a year, in dues. NASW has spent money to co-sponsor the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialworkers.org\/pressroom\/2004\/022304.asp\">March for Women\u2019s Lives<\/a>, a rally in support of abortion as \u201creproductive freedom,\u201d and put their support behind the abortion-expanding\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialworkers.org\/pressroom\/2004\/022304.asp\">Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act<\/a> in New York.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialworkhelper.com\/2013\/10\/24\/university-decision-end-partnership-reproductive-rights-may-bigger-implications\/\">Social Work Helper<\/a>, not all students support Rainford\u2019s decision, and one particular student, Andy Bowen, has organized a group of social work students into action to try to get this decision reversed. The group, calling itself NCSSS, wants students and faculty to be able to vote on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Rainford, however, is completely committed to his decision. In a recent tweet, he says, \u201cIt\u2019s amazing the way people will spin &amp; twist your words when you make an unpopular decision.
