{"id":39840,"date":"2013-08-23T16:46:45","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T20:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=39840"},"modified":"2013-08-24T07:32:04","modified_gmt":"2013-08-24T11:32:04","slug":"religion-voice-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/religion-voice-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Should religion have a voice in society?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In <em>The Coming of the Third Reich<\/em>, hailed by the <em>Atlantic Monthly<\/em> as \u201cthe definitive English-language account,\u201d Cambridge historian Richard Evans outlines the various philosophies which undergirded the Nazi regime.\u00a0 Among many others, he points to thinkers such as Ernst Haeckel, who openly advocated killing the mentally ill, and Alfred Ploetz, who believed a panel of doctors should attend every birth to determine if the baby was fit to live.\u00a0 As Evans proceeds to explain,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Such a technocratically rationalistic approach to population management presupposed an entirely secular, instrumental approach to morality.\u00a0 Christian precepts such as the sanctity of marriage and parenthood, or the equal value of every being endowed with an immortal soul, were thrown out of the window\u2026.Fundamentally, racial hygiene was born of a new drive for society to be governed by scientific principles irrespective of all other considerations. (p. 38)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Today, the racial component of such an ideology has been swept away, but the drive for a society \u201cgoverned by scientific principles\u201d irrespective of religious dogma remains strong.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, attempts have been made in America to outlaw the medical procedure described below:<\/p>\n<p>[youtube http:\/\/youtu.be\/t&#8211;MhKiaD7c]<\/p>\n<p>These attempts have been met with furious opposition.\u00a0 Often, this opposition is based upon the belief that religious dogma should not have any influence on legislation.\u00a0 Perhaps the crudest expression of this view was presented by the young girl pictured below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/jesussign.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-38086 alignleft\" style=\"margin-right: 15px; margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px;\" alt=\"Way too young to be saying things like this\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/jesussign-300x225.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/jesussign-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/jesussign.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, there is an obvious problem with such an approach:\u00a0 if we reject \u201cChristian precepts\u201d and rely only upon \u201cscientific principles,\u201d late-term abortion is not the only activity that becomes permissible.<\/p>\n<p>As an engineer in the aerospace industry, I had the opportunity to see some very large and expensive scientific instruments.\u00a0 I remember in particular standing inside the largest wind tunnel in the world, located at NASA\u2019s Ames Research Center.\u00a0 In all my work, however, I never encountered an apparatus capable of measuring right and wrong.\u00a0 Moral values cannot be measured in a laboratory, only causal relationships. \u00a0In other words, science tells us which actions produce which results.\u00a0 But which results should be preferred?\u00a0 Which actions are permissible?\u00a0 Science can give no answer to such questions.<\/p>\n<p>If we reject the notion that all human beings have intrinsic and inestimable\u00a0value, we cannot object to the procedure described in the video above.\u00a0 But neither can we object to the procedures described by Ernst Haeckel and Alfred Ploetz.\u00a0 In short, a morality based only upon \u201cscientific principles\u201d is a morality without bounds. \u00a0\u00a0If we believe we can build a humane and compassionate society upon the same presupposition which undergirded National Socialism, we are gravely mistaken.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In The Coming of the Third Reich, hailed by the Atlantic Monthly as \u201cthe definitive English-language account,\u201d Cambridge historian Richard Evans outlines the various philosophies which undergirded the Nazi regime.\u00a0 Among many others, he points to thinkers such as Ernst Haeckel, who openly advocated killing the mentally ill, and Alfred Ploetz, who believed a panel [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":68,"featured_media":24301,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Should religion have a voice in society?
