\"Leah<\/a>Over the weekend, a mini-brawl erupted on Twitter among myself and several pro-lifers and pro-aborts reacting to Kurt Eichenwald’s epic meltdown<\/a>. As you can imagine, the brain cell casualty count was astronomic.<\/p>\n

But the most blog-worthy insanity came from pro-abortion OB\/GYN Leah Torres, who is perhaps best known for telling Dana Loesch<\/a> that \u201cabortions save women\u2019s lives. Period. Every. Single. Time,\u201d which scores of sane tweeters had a field day with. In response to me, Torres put forth<\/a> a pair of her blog posts as general justifications for her abortion advocacy. In reality, they expose just how little pro-abortion \u201cdoctors\u201d care about the truth of their claims, or the moral principles they violate.<\/p>\n

The title of Torres\u2019 first offering, \u201cUniversal Truths<\/a>,\u201d will be disproven even quicker than you\u2019re expecting. You see, her first universal truth is that \u201ceveryone wants fewer abortions.\u201d She supports it with a stock flowery paragraph about how women never want to be in the position of considering abortion in the first place, followed by the usual boilerplate about how we must support \u201ccomprehensive sexual health education and access to highly effective contraception\u201d in order to lower abortion rates.<\/p>\n

Of course, the facts don\u2019t support Torres\u2019 fantasy\u2014see Steven Ertelt’s dissection<\/a> of the CHOICE Project study she cites, Ed Morrissey’s reminder<\/a> that CDC data suggests lack of contraception \u201caccess\u201d is a non-issue in the vast majority of unwanted pregnancies, Ross Douthat’s overview<\/a> of Guttmacher data showing that contraception-friendly blue states often have higher abortion rates, or Marc Barnes’<\/a> exploration of the global data.<\/p>\n

But for those too busy to go number-diving, Torres was kind enough to debunk her own claim for us.\u00a0 In our exchange<\/a>, I asked her a simple question: \u201cif we all want fewer, then what restrictions do you favor?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her answer: \u201cI favor no restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n

So even though \u201ceveryone wants fewer abortions,\u201d there are zero<\/em> circumstances under which abortions should be harder to obtain. Zero conditions added to the procedure itself to make someone less likely to undergo it. Zero pieces of relevant information that should be added to what abortionists must give abortion seekers. Zero situations in which an abortion isn\u2019t justifiable. Zero living unborn babies who deserve to be treated humanely even if their mothers don\u2019t want them.<\/p>\n

So it turns out that \u201cuniversal truth\u201d actually means something more along the lines of \u201cbald-faced lie.\u201d For future reference, Doc, if you want people to believe your talking points, you have to at least try to pretend that you believe them yourself.<\/p>\n

The next \u201ctruth\u201d is that \u201cabortions will always be needed,\u201d because there will always be fetal abnormalities and life-threatening pregnancies. But Torres apparently thinks flowery prose about Mother Nature is a substitute for logical argument, because nowhere does she explain why \u201cabnormal\u201d babies don\u2019t have basic human rights (lots of people would have told Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler<\/a> she \u201cneeded\u201d an abortion), acknowledge that life-of-the-mother cases are red herrings<\/a> because no pro-lifer would deny women life-saving treatment in such cases, or show how any of this would justify abortions that don\u2019t involve serious medical complications.<\/p>\n

Torres pads this non-argument with the following, revealing observation:<\/p>\n

When a pregnancy is desired, that pregnancy is a child riding their bike for the first time, getting on the bus for their first day of school, and going off to college the minute the \u201c+\u201d sign appears on the home pregnancy test.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Presumably, then, a non-desired baby is none of those things\u2014indeed, since \u201cno restrictions\u201d on abortion are tolerable, it\u2019s not even any of those things when he or she can think, feel, breathe, kick, cry, or survive outside of the womb.<\/p>\n

Torres couldn\u2019t care less that the unborn baby actually is<\/em> a living human being; the entirety of his or her value is determined by whether someone else cares for him or her. Is there anyone outside the womb she would apply this standard to? Should we start dismantling our child neglect laws, since kids that nobody \u201cdesires\u201d don\u2019t deserve protection?<\/p>\n

Frankly, it\u2019s terrifying that any physician, sworn under the Hippocratic Oath<\/a> to \u201ctread with care in matters of life and death,\u201d would take such an inane, callously-subjective view of human life\u2019s value.<\/p>\n

The last imaginary truth is that \u201cwhen abortion care is legal and accessible, it is safe.\u201d It consists of an obligatory assurance that of course<\/em> Kermit Gosnell doesn\u2019t represent \u201chow abortion is or should be performed,\u201d an invocation of \u201cthe horrific tragedies of maternal deaths before abortion became legal in this country in 1974,\u201d and a link to a report on \u201cwhat really happens to women when abortion is legal\u201d\u2026in Latin America.<\/p>\n

The real truth is that Gosnell only got away with it as long as he did because the \u201crespectable\u201d pro-choicers in the National Abortion Federation and Tom Ridge administration willfully looked the other way<\/a>, and that those pre-Roe<\/em> deaths were exaggerated and had nothing to do with legality<\/a>, which is far more relevant than comparing the United States to Guatemala.<\/p>\n

With Torres\u2019 working definition of \u201cuniversal truth\u201d turning out to be such a joke, one might start to ask unflattering questions about her integrity. Fortunately, she covered that too\u2014her second offering, \u201cEthics vs. Morals<\/a>,\u201d posits the following moral standard:<\/p>\n

If it is legal and deemed ethical by society and the experts in the medical field, no physician has the right to impose personal morals on the care of their patients.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, the author of a piece titled \u201cUniversal Truths\u201d is telling us there are no universal truths when it comes to morality. Doctors should utterly outsource their reasoning on right and wrong to whatever the law allows and to social consensus.<\/p>\n

If that\u2019s your standard, then of course you\u2019re not going to care if the \u201ctreatment\u201d your patient wants kills someone else. Of course you\u2019re going to tell whatever lie you can get away with in the service of abortion.<\/p>\n

And lest you think I haven\u2019t given Frau Doktor Torres\u2019 intentions the benefit of the doubt, let\u2019s consider one last quote<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I do not pretend to understand why there is such force behind trying to control women\u2019s reproductive organs and, in turn, their bodies and their lives but I have sworn to advocate for them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s it. That\u2019s about as incontestable a point of no return as possible. Banal \u201ccontrol women\u2019s bodies\u201d misdirection aside, people oppose abortion because IT KILLS LIVING HUMAN BEINGS<\/strong>, and every honest person on either side of the debate admits it<\/a>. There is no leeway whatsoever for anyone who has known about this controversy for five minutes, and certainly<\/em> not for a medical professional presuming to speak authoritatively on the subject, to plausibly pretend she doesn\u2019t even know the other side\u2019s motivation.<\/p>\n

Now, the story here isn\u2019t that Leah Torres is a heartless pathological liar. Twitter\u2019s crawling with those. The story is that we live in a society where medical and academic institutions<\/a> don\u2019t weed out the heartless pathological liars, where heartless pathological liars can obtain credentials and positions where they exert substantial influence over unsuspecting patients, and where professional media organizations turn to <\/a>heartless pathological liars for expert analysis.<\/p>\n
