The savvier pro-aborts clumsily try to change the subject or qualify that of course they\u2019d allow abortions only for extreme medical circumstances late in pregnancy (which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/blog\/contrary_to_popular_opinion_america_already_has_an_extreme_position_on_abor\/\">isn&#8217;t true<\/a>, but that\u2019s another article), and the few honest enough to admit they just don\u2019t care <a href=\"\/news\/a-life-worth-sacrificing-salon-blogger-admits-abortion-ends-life\/\">rightly come across as monsters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Often, however, intuition works against us when the discussion focuses on the earliest moments of pregnancy, in which the new human\u2019s brain has yet to form and images of zygotes appear indistinguishable from any number of human cells that possess no moral worth independent of the person they constitute. Science <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/medical_testimony\/\">tells us<\/a> that the life of an individual human being begins with fertilization, Scripture <a href=\"http:\/\/prolifetraining.com\/FiveMinute4.asp\">tells us<\/a> that human life is innately priceless, and ethics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/a_future_lost\/\">tell us<\/a> that it is unjust to deprive anyone of his future, but for many, putting an apparent microscopic blob on the same level as themselves or their children is just too much of an abstraction to wrap their heads around.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t help that liberal culture\u2019s relativistic tendencies are fundamentally at odds with rational thinking. The left emphasizes emotionalism and appeals to people\u2019s egos by telling them their feelings are authoritative guides to major moral and political questions. If it seems right to you, that\u2019s all that matters.<\/p>\n<p>This, obviously, is a terrible way to make decisions. That different people\u2019s senses lead them to incompatible and contradictory conclusions is enough to prove its inadequacy to all but the most fanatical relativist, but still it persists, because it makes intellectually lazy people feel better about themselves and is a convenient rationalization to dismiss violence done to the unborn.<\/p>\n<p>To help understand how the zygote\u2019s appearance and development level don\u2019t negate its biological humanity, let\u2019s consider another scientific question, on the opposite end of the size scale, in which there\u2019s a significant disconnect between scientific truth and the impression our unassisted senses leave us with. Take a look outside:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Landscape.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-35300\" alt=\"Landscape\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Landscape-300x187.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDoes that look like the surface of a big sphere in a massive black void to you? Not to me. Let\u2019s go a little higher. Still flat:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Plane-View.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-35301\" alt=\"Plane View\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Plane-View-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nYou\u2019ve got to get somewhere around this high before the naked eye can begin to discern the Earth\u2019s true shape:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/View-from-Orbit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-35302\" alt=\"View from Orbit\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/View-from-Orbit-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNobody (well, <a href=\"http:\/\/theflatearthsociety.org\/cms\/\">almost<\/a> nobody) disputes that our planet is round anymore, because the true scientific fact of the matter is widely known. We answered the question through scientific analysis, not by glancing out our window and calling it a day. But if astronomy was governed by the same evidentiary standards that liberals use to conclude that zygotes aren\u2019t live human beings, we\u2019d all be flat-earthers.
