The nickname\u2019s never really resonated with me, though, since hearing him drone on is more like listening to Winnie the Pooh\u2019s evil twin than to the cool menace of Inspector Callahan.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, \u201cdingy\u201d seems a pretty apt description for the Senate Majority Leader\u2019s takeaway from the Kermit Gosnell trial. The <em>Weekly Standard<\/em>\u2019s John McCormack <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/blogs\/reid-answer-gosnell-clean-and-sterile-late-term-abortion-clinics_724464.html\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think to keep pushing these clinics back into the situations where they wind up like this is wrong,&#8221; Reid said. &#8220;I think no matter how you stand on the issue of abortion, people who make that decision should do it and not have to be worried about infections and some butcher like this doing the bad things they do. They should be in a place that&#8217;s clean and sterile and have people that know what they&#8217;re doing and care about what they do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reid&#8217;s remarks came in response to a question from THE WEEKLY STANDARD about whether or not he supports a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d113:s.886:\">bill<\/a>\u00a0introduced last week that would\u00a0ban abortion in the nation&#8217;s capital after the fifth month of pregnancy, with exceptions for when the life or physical health of the mother is at risk.\u00a0There are currently no restrictions on abortion throughout all 9 months of pregnancy in the federal district.\u00a0Reid did not directly comment on the bill but expressed general opposition to restrictions on abortion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s all the regulations\u2019 fault (<a href=\"\/news\/did-pro-lifers-drive-women-to-kermit-gosnell\/\">no<\/a>), better sanitary standards would have made a world of difference (<a href=\"\/news\/is-kermit-gosnell-any-different-from-the-rest\/\">no<\/a>)\u2026Reid has the left\u2019s Gosnell script mostly down, with one bizarre twist: not content to characterize abortion-seekers as driven to Gosnell\u2019s waiting arms, he suggests that <em>the clinic itself<\/em> was pushed \u201cback into the situation.\u201d So external circumstances in some way <em>made<\/em> Gosnell run a filthy clinic, employ unqualified personnel, falsify records, endanger women, and slaughter children? Regulations and\/or abortion restrictions drove his operation to \u201cwind up like this\u201d? Even by liberal standards, that\u2019s crazy.<\/p>\n<p>As McCormack notes, it wasn\u2019t so long ago that Reid identified himself as a pro-life Democrat, who \u201ceven voted in 2003 against an amendment\u00a0stating that\u00a0Roe\u00a0v.\u00a0Wade\u00a0was rightly decided,\u201d which makes his Tuesday contention that \u201cthe law of the land is now what the Supreme Court has said\u201d all the more appalling.<\/p>\n<p>And Reid is far from the only Democrat to abandon the unborn for political power. Early in their careers, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epm.org\/resources\/1994\/May\/22\/look-who-knows-abortion-wrong\/\">President Bill Clinton, Senator Ted Kennedy, \u201cReverend\u201d Jesse Jackson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ashbrook.org\/publications\/oped-hayward-00-extreme\/\">Vice President and presidential nominee Al Gore<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2004\/04\/23\/nat-466\/\">Secretary of State and presidential nominee John Kerry<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2003\/09\/05\/nat-103\/\">House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanevents.com\/2006\/01\/11\/coburn-irks-dubrin-on-abortion-flipflop\/\">Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin<\/a> all spoke and acted against abortion, often as forcefully and eloquently as anyone.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s bad enough to go along with the mass slaughter of the unborn because one doesn\u2019t understand the issue or is infatuated with some warped philosophy. But to <em>know<\/em> what abortion is, to have admitted its reality and empathized with its victims, and then to have abandoned them because career advancement in the Democrat Party required it\u2026that\u2019s another level of heartlessness entirely.
