{"id":35072,"date":"2013-05-14T13:00:19","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T17:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=35072"},"modified":"2016-09-16T18:55:50","modified_gmt":"2016-09-16T22:55:50","slug":"nc-education-bill-on-abortion-preterm-birth-link-sparks-selective-outrage-from-naral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nc-education-bill-on-abortion-preterm-birth-link-sparks-selective-outrage-from-naral\/","title":{"rendered":"NC education bill on abortion-preterm birth link sparks selective outrage from NARAL"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><div id=\"attachment_23871\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/4963334783_dcb3fb6163.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23871\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23871\" alt=\"(Photo credit: sjcockell on Flickr)\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/4963334783_dcb3fb6163-300x191.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/4963334783_dcb3fb6163-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/4963334783_dcb3fb6163.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-23871\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: sjcockell on Flickr)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yesterday, the North Carolina state Senate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/2013\/05\/13\/4039962\/abortion-education-bill-passes.html\">passed<\/a> legislation requiring sex education to warn students, as SB 132&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncga.state.nc.us\/Sessions\/2013\/Bills\/Senate\/HTML\/S132v3.html\">text<\/a> puts it, \u201cabout the preventable causes of preterm birth in subsequent pregnancies, including induced abortion, smoking, alcohol consumption, the use of illicit drugs, and inadequate prenatal care.\u201d Naturally, the state chapter of NARAL is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prochoicenc.org\/media\/press\/20130513.shtml\">incensed<\/a> about this display of \u201canti-choice indoctrination\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Tonight, the Senate passed SB 132 by a vote of 38-10. The bill that would force educators to mandate that lies about abortion be included in our state sex-education curriculum, &#8221; said Suzanne Buckley, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina. \u00a0&#8220;NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina applauds the 10 Senators opposed SB 132, which, even in its amended form, aims to teach NC\u2019s young people an extreme ideological opinion rather than science,&#8221; Buckley continued.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, lawmakers amended SB 132, and inadvertently made an already horrific bill even worse. \u00a0SB 132 now stipulates that students be taught abortion is one of a group of factors that can\u00a0cause\u00a0to preterm delivery later in life. &#8220;The amended language of the bill implies that abortion is a\u00a0scientifically proven to cause pre-term delivery. Top medical authorities (the CDC, the WHO, and the AMA) agree that there is no established link between abortion and pre-term delivery; this bill is more than misleading, it\u2019s political propaganda,\u201d Buckley added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Admittedly, this is a claim I haven\u2019t seen a great deal of and am not extensively versed in the evidence for or against, but a preliminary search reveals that this isn\u2019t something pro-lifers just made up. In 2007, <em>TIME<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/health\/article\/0,8599,1695927,00.html\">reported<\/a> that the (at the time) largest and most thorough study of its kind found that \u201c[w]omen who had had one, two or three prior abortions or miscarriages were three, five and nine times more likely, respectively, to have a low-birth-weight child,\u201d leading co-author Tilahun Adera of Virginia Commonwealth University to confidently declare, \u201cIt\u2019s not just an association. The risk of premature birth increases with the increasing number of abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, the <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/03\/abortions-linked-to-risk-of-preterm-birth\/\">reported<\/a> on another study which found that, after \u201ccontrolling for smoking, a history of miscarriage, socioeconomic level and other factors,\u201d the \u201cvery preterm birth risk\u201d (28 weeks or earlier) \u201cincreased with the number of previous abortions a woman had had: a 19 percent increase after one abortion, 69 percent for two, and 278 percent for three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In February of this year, researchers at McGill University in Montreal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23470063\">found<\/a> a \u201ca significant increase in the risk of preterm delivery in women with a history of previous induced abortion. This association was stronger with decreasing gestational age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Note well that the first two examples come from two of the nation\u2019s leading, shall we say, non-conservative publications. For those willing to consider what pro-life experts have to say on the subject, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians &amp; Gynecologists has much more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaplog.org\/complications-of-induced-abortion\/induced-abortion-and-pre-term-birth\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the studies have caveats, and other studies found different results, but that\u2019s inevitable in science. The bill certainly doesn\u2019t tell \u201clies about abortion\u201d; it fairly characterizes abortion as one of many possible contributors to premature birth. And before we decide that NARAL\u2019s \u201cbecause these authorities say so!\u201d suffices to end the conversation, it\u2019s worth noting that all three of the \u201ctop medical authorities\u201d they cite have been caught politicizing medicine, including on the subject of abortion (see, for instance, the American Medical Association <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/blog\/the_american_medical_association_addresses_abortion\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/blog\/pain_isnt_the_issue\/\">here<\/a>, the Center for Disease Control <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenewamerican.com\/usnews\/politics\/item\/5523-cdc-attempts-to-hide-abortion-data\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2011\/06\/01\/the-cdc-is-subsidizing-left-wing-activist-groups\/\">here<\/a>, and the World Health Organization <a href=\"www.cato.org\/publications\/commentary\/politicizing-health-harming-patients\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2010\/12\/08\/is_the_who_becoming_irrelevant\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, it\u2019s more than a little perverse to see an abortion advocacy group lecture anyone about injecting \u201cpolitical propaganda\u201d into the classroom and substituting \u201can extreme ideological opinion\u201d for science. In the pro-choice world, that\u2019s universally embraced standard operating procedure. From their <a href=\"\/news\/planned-parenthood-wanted-an-abstinence-education-grant-in-michigan-yes-really\/\">online resources to the classroom<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/projects\/\">clinics across the country<\/a> to the <a href=\"\/news\/the-train-wreck-of-barack-obamas-pro-choice-reasoning\/\">highest office in the land<\/a>, abortion fans lie about every aspect of embryology and abortion, and promote a promiscuous lifestyle while misleading students about its safety.
