The <em>Huffington Post<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/04\/24\/jail-for-abortion-el-salvador_n_3150147.html?utm_hp_ref=world\">reports<\/a> that a young pregnant woman\u2019s life is in danger, but, after a month, the country\u2019s Supreme Court still has yet to rule on her hospital\u2019s petition to perform a life-saving abortion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Beatriz has been diagnosed with several illnesses, including lupus and kidney disease, Amnesty wrote, and her baby is missing a large part of its brain and skull and would likely die within hours or days of birth.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion in El Salvador is a black-and-white issue. According to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, abortion in all cases is illegal in the Latin American nation &#8212; even when it could save the life of the mother.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a sentence containing links to several unrelated American abortion stories, <em>Salon\u2019s<\/em> Katie McDonough <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/04\/18\/critically_ill_woman_faces_jail_time_if_she_goes_forward_with_life_saving_abortion\/\">sneers<\/a>, \u201c[I]f government policy and religious ideology interfering with a woman\u2019s right to access abortion care or a doctor\u2019s ability to exercise medical judgment and save a woman\u2019s life sounds familiar, it should.\u201d Nancy Northup, head of the so-called Center for Reproductive Rights, <a href=\"http:\/\/reproductiverights.org\/en\/press-room\/center-for-reproductive-rights-files-case-revealing-the-horrifying-reality-of-el-salvador\">demands<\/a> that the international community rise to \u201csafeguard fundamental reproductive rights\u201d and preposterously claims that \u201c[s]tudy after study has shown there are no positive outcomes to banning abortion outright\u201d (if you don\u2019t count a baby avoiding death as a \u201cpositive outcome\u201d). NARAL <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogforchoice.com\/archives\/2013\/04\/forced-to-choos.html\">cites<\/a> pro-life laws in North Dakota and Arkansas as evidence that American women could suffer the same fate. Samantha Escobar at BlissTree <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blisstree.com\/2013\/04\/19\/public-health-2\/medically-necessary-abortion-could-send-el-salvadorian-woman-to-jail\/\">wonders<\/a>, \u201cWhile Americans frequently look at countries like El Salvador and call them the \u2018third world,\u2019 why is it that our policies are beginning to look more like theirs than the ones we frequently see as developed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Savita battles have revolved around the details of her condition, what Irish laws do and don\u2019t say, and which medical authorities made what judgments. There may be similar minutiae to fight over in the Beatriz case, but I\u2019d much rather cut to the chase: the \u201cin El Salvador\u201d part. As in, \u201cnot the United States.\u201d Whatever is the case in El Salvador, neither it nor the situation in Ireland has anything to do with the American abortion debate.<\/p>\n<p>Where is the evidence that pro-life laws in <em>this<\/em> country would force pregnant women to die on behalf of their babies? What U.S. pro-life activist, commentator, or proposal would prevent anyone from receiving life-saving treatment in such cases? Can pro-aborts find any big, bad American anti-choicers calling for such a thing? The National Right to Life Committee? American Life League? Susan B. Anthony List? Americans United for Life? Live Action? Personhood USA? Life Training Institute? Life Report? Abort73? Feminists for Life? The Catholic Church? The Republican Party? The Family Research Council? Operation Rescue? Rick Santorum? Ramesh Ponnuru? Randy Alcorn? Jill Stanek? James Dobson? Rush Limbaugh? Ann Coulter? LifeNews? LifeSiteNews?<\/p>\n<p>To the best of my knowledge, nobody in the American pro-life movement, not even in its personhood or no-exceptions factions, has ever taken the position that women whose pregnancies genuinely endanger their lives should be forced to die for the sake of their babies; in fact, <a href=\"\/news\/dominican-pregnancy-death-sparks-american-demagoguery-over-life-of-the-mother-cases\/\">many<\/a> of the above <a href=\"\/news\/a-student-interviews-josh-brahm-on-fetal-pain-the-inhumanity-of-abortion-in-what-scenario-would-he-perform-an-abortion\/\">have<\/a> expressly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/end_abortion\/is_abortion_ever_justified\/\">affirmed<\/a> the permissibility of acting to save the mother\u2019s live even if the treatment results in the baby\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, even though such treatments cut an unborn baby off from the womb\u2019s support before he or she can survive independently, resulting in his or her death, pro-lifers don\u2019t consider it to be an \u201cabortion,\u201d since lethal force isn\u2019t being directly applied to the baby, and his or her death is an unintended, secondary result. Some may consider that distinction an unsatisfying matter of semantics, but the bottom line is clear: even if you do call that an abortion, <em>we wouldn\u2019t stop you. We wouldn\u2019t punish you.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even more absurd than suggesting that pro-lifers want to do otherwise is the idea that voters would go along with it even if we tried. With at most <a href=\"http:\/\/cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/59-americans-prohibit-abortion-most-or-all-circumstances\">20%<\/a> of the country currently willing to ban abortions due to rape, the odds that they\u2019d tolerate forcing a woman to continue a pregnancy that might kill her are extremely remote.<\/p>\n<p>So tell me, if there really is a threat that the U.S. is going to be riddled with new Savitas or Beatrizes, where is it going to come from? Do pro-aborts who make the accusation sincerely have an actual proposal or some other hard evidence in mind, or is this just more defamatory emotional blackmail, exploiting the most gut-wrenching scenarios possible to ensure that babies remain killable for far less dire reasons?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time to put this to rest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":54,"featured_media":33850,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false},"categories":[15],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Ending pro-aborts&#039;
