Sometimes you can\u2019t have it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andy Cohen, a gay radio and TV personality who is the executive producer of the &#8220;Real Housewives&#8221; franchise, has embraced surrogacy. He chose to create an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/andy-cohen-children-birthing-embryos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unknown number of embryos<\/a> \u2014 he said he &#8220;can&#8217;t remember&#8221; how many he has \u2014 and had two children as a single father. On a recent episode of Sirius XM&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.siriusxm.com\/player\/episode-audio\/entity\/8b25f9a9-009e-0856-ab9a-afc9993d3172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Cohen Live<\/a>,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2025\/08\/07\/parents\/andy-cohen-blasts-dumb-martina-navratilova-for-controversial-surrogacy-take\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clapped back<\/a> at Navratilova.<\/p>\n<p>Cohen recalled speaking with Lemigova about Navratilova&#8217;s statements, and she said she <a href=\"https:\/\/realityblurb.com\/2025\/07\/31\/rhoms-julia-lemigova-addresses-when-her-drama-with-guerdy-really-began-martinas-surrogacy-comments-and-if-she-regrets-water-toss-plus-reacts-to-facelift-shade-reveals-biggest-narcissist-of-cas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disagreed<\/a> with the remarks. \u201cMartina and I share a bed, but we don\u2019t share a brain,\u201d Lemigova said. \u201cWe [do] not always agree on different views. I believe in surrogacy, and it was kind of put out of [context], and I completely disagree with her comment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cohen then <a href=\"https:\/\/realityblurb.com\/2025\/08\/06\/rhom-andy-cohen-slams-martina-navratilovas-surrogacy-comments-as-ill-informed-and-dumb-denies-julias-suggestion-that-tweet-was-misrepresented\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mentioned<\/a> Lemigova&#8217;s comments, saying he would be addressing them with her in person:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I asked Julia about it on Watch What Happens Live. Julia and I have discussed this offline. Martina will not be at the Miami reunion, so I will not be asking Martina about this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I\u2019m sure it will come up again at the Miami reunion because, guess what? I believe Lisa Hochstein had her, had major complications with her last pregnancy and possibly needed to use [a surrogate]. You know, Julia did say on &#8216;Watch What Happens Live,&#8217; and we were live, and I didn\u2019t want to start debating it, and I will ask her this at the reunion; what she said is Martina\u2019s tweet was kind of misinterpreted or misrepresented.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But Cohen refused to accept Lemigova&#8217;s explanation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Martina tweeted was \u2018surrogacy is wrong.\u2019 So I don\u2019t know how that\u2019s \u2026 She said, \u2018Surrogacy is just wrong. Sometimes you can\u2019t have it all.\u2019 Well, here\u2019s the deal: That\u2019s just ill-informed and dumb. And yes, we will talk about it at the reunion,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Basically, she\u2019s uninformed on the issue, so I just think she\u2019s not informed. It\u2019s a bad take. What can I tell you? She\u2019s just wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Why It Matters:<\/h2>\n<p>As Navratilova pointed out herself, surrogacy does indeed mirror the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/handmaids-tale-abortion-supporters-ignore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Handmaid&#8217;s Tale&#8221;<\/a> in many ways; in the process, both women and children are dehumanized, turned into products to be bought and sold \u2014 to wealthy people like Cohen.<\/p>\n<p>Surrogates are typically <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/renting-wombs-new-york-paid-gestational-surrogacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low-income women<\/a>, and many live in countries with high poverty rates, like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ukraine-ban-commercial-surrogacy-foreigners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>, which have become hotspots for surrogacy. These women are at higher risk of experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31830299\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pregnancy complications<\/a>\u00a0like gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and bleeding complications after birth.<\/p>\n<p>And the wealthy buyers frequently treat the women&#8217;s bodies as if they are mere incubators, gestating made-to-order products for buyers. These would-be parents have even been known to <a href=\"https:\/\/whcuradio.com\/news\/025520-new-surrogacy-laws-go-into-effect-february-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buy insurance<\/a> in case the woman&#8217;s body doesn&#8217;t perform on demand as expected; some have coerced women into abortions if a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/parents-try-to-force-surrogate-mother-to-abort-their-disabled-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prenatal disability<\/a> is diagnosed or if the surrogate is carrying <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/surrogate-pregnant-triplets-threatened-financial-ruin-doesnt-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiples<\/a>. Sometimes the reason is simply that the baby is the &#8220;wrong&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/surrogate-mom-ordered-abort-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gender<\/a> from the one the buyers expected to receive.<\/p>\n<p>Babies conceived through IVF also have a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31830299\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher risk<\/a> for certain complications, like low birth weight and prematurity. It&#8217;s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/05\/180503142724.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/nordicmodelnow.org\/2020\/01\/29\/i-was-an-altruistic-surrogate-and-am-now-against-all-surrogacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">separating babies<\/a> from their birth mother \u2014 whether that mother is biologically related or not \u2014 causes immense <a href=\"https:\/\/thembeforeus.com\/yes-surrogacy-is-wrong-even-when-straight-couples-do-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trauma<\/a> for that child which may even permanently alter adult brain function.<\/p>\n<p>While separation trauma is also created by adoption, adoption does not <em>create a child<\/em> with the <em>explicit intention<\/em> of separating that child from his or her birth mother. A child born through surrogacy, however, <strong>is<\/strong> created with this exact intent, and is often also robbed of his or her medical history, heritage, and background.<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, there is little-to-no concern for the well-being of children created through surrogacy. While adoption requires extensive background checks and training for prospective parents, individuals who purchase babies through IVF and surrogacy can do so with essentially <em>no oversight<\/em>, as evidenced by the fact that even <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/convicted-sex-offender-baby-surrogacy-oversight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sex offenders<\/a> have obtained children through surrogacy due to the lack of any background checks.<\/p>\n<p>Many adults conceived through these methods are not often supportive of them. According to a Harvard University <a href=\"https:\/\/bioethics.hms.harvard.edu\/journal\/donor-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, 62% of children conceived through donor technologies say the use of those technologies are unethical and immoral. One woman <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/adoption-ivf-surrogacy-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the pro-children\u2019s-rights organization Them Before Us, \u201cSomehow, somewhere, my parents developed the idea that they deserved to have a baby, and it didn\u2019t matter how much it cost, how many times it took, or how many died in the process. They deserved a child. And with an attitude like that, by the time I was born they thought they deserved to have the perfect child\u2026 as Dad defined a perfect child. And since they deserved a child, I was their property to be controlled, not a person or a gift to be treasured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Navratilova isn&#8217;t dumb or uninformed; perhaps she is aware that surrogacy has all these issues and more, and is a process that puts <em>the actual needs of children<\/em> behind the desires of adults.<\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line:<\/h2>\n<p>Andy Cohen clearly has an emotional investment in surrogacy, so his harsh response to Navratilova is not surprising.
