Bond also blamed Texas&#8217; pro-life laws for the couple\u2019s suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Backstory:<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond explained that she met and married her husband, Kevin, in her early thirties. After trying to conceive naturally for a year, the Bonds met with medical professionals in the fall of 2023, who told them the only way they would conceive children was through IVF. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond doesn\u2019t mention whether any of the medical professionals offered<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-ivf-lauren-rubal-alternative-restore-fertility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restorative Reproductive Medicine<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to heal Bond so she could conceive naturally. Instead, like so many American couples hoping for children, it appears the Bonds were directed straight to the IVF industry, which<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/suffering-stephanie-gray-connors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commodifies<\/span><\/a> children from the moment of fertilization and <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is fraught with health risks for mothers \u2014 and the babies who manage to survive the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Details:<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bonds\u2019 first son, Kevin, conceived via IVF, was diagnosed with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24161-renal-agenesis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bilateral renal agenesis<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at 17 weeks gestation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mom-encouraged-abort-doctors-worked-save-others\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condition<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in which the kidneys do not form, preventing the preborn child from urinating. This causes a low amount of amniotic fluid, which leads to underdeveloped lungs and other concerns (Potter syndrome). Without kidneys or fully functioning lungs, most children with these complications die at birth or very soon after.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning the diagnosis was devastating for the couple.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond described that moment:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not surprisingly, when we were at our first anatomy scan at 17 weeks, Kevin and I were very excited. We were watching our baby move around and we were looking at his heartbeat. We didn\u2019t know that anything was wrong until our maternal fetal medicine specialist came in and told us.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explained that our son had no kidneys, which meant that there was no amniotic fluid around him, and with no amniotic fluid his lungs couldn\u2019t develop.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This meant that he would be crushed in utero without the amniotic fluid, and then if he did survive until birth he would suffocate because his lungs wouldn\u2019t work, and it would be incredibly painful for him.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>A Fatal Decision Based on Incorrect Information<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond related that she immediately made up her mind to end her son\u2019s life after receiving his diagnosis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion was not offered by the Texas medical staff, and the medical professionals also didn\u2019t advise the Bonds on how to obtain an abortion out of state. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond recounted that all the doctors who consulted the couple said, &#8220;No baby with this diagnosis ha[s] ever survived.\u2019&#8221; But this claim is false. Cleveland Clinic <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24161-renal-agenesis\">notes<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Until recently, a newborn with no kidneys and underdeveloped lungs had little hope of surviving outside of the uterus for more than a few hours. But new experimental treatments offer a reason to have hope. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The treatment involves injecting saline (saltwater) solution into the uterus during pregnancy to restore amniotic fluid levels. The fluid allows the fetus\u2019s lungs to develop. After birth, the baby receives <a class=\"text-brandBlue-500 underline underline-offset-[5px] decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/14618-dialysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-identity=\"link\">dialysis<\/a> until a <a class=\"text-brandBlue-500 underline underline-offset-[5px] decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/22537-kidney-transplant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-identity=\"link\">kidney transplant procedure<\/a> can take place. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>This treatment is still experimental and not widely available.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News has reported the stories of multiple children who were able to survive birth without kidneys and went on to survive with kidney donations, thanks to dedicated medical professionals and the generosity of their parents and organ donors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cruel-protect-child-killed-life-limiting-diagnosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Andi Mahoney of Florida faced a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mom-fights-baby-life-limiting-diagnosis\/\">diagnosis<\/a> of bilateral renal agenesis for her baby girl, Emmie Hope, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/10\/22\/bilateral-renal-agenesis-survival-story\/71247489007\/\">at 20 weeks<\/a>; doctors told her family there was no chance of Emmie&#8217;s survival. Mahoney tracked down a medical team that would help her, underwent amnioinfusions during pregnancy, and after Emmie was born, cared for her on dialysis for two years before she was able to donate her own kidney to her.<\/p>\n<p>Former U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler\u2019s daughter was also <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/jamie-herrera-beutler-gives-birth-to-miracle-baby\/\">diagnosed<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with bilateral renal agenesis and survived thanks to a kidney transplant from her father.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Killing to &#8216;prevent suffering&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond framed her decision to have an abortion as a way to suffer so her son wouldn\u2019t have to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI knew immediately that the decision I would make was to terminate the pregnancy with an abortion. I could take on my baby\u2019s pain so he wouldn\u2019t have to do it,\u201d Bond wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond seems to believe that the abortion spared her son from pain because he did not have to experience suffocation shortly after birth. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the two-day, second trimester abortion that Bond described is most likely the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dilation and evacuation (D&amp;E) abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a horrific procedure in which the unborn baby is dismembered, torn limb from limb, and taken from the uterus in mangled pieces. The abortion procedure is also difficult on the mother and father. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond related that her husband witnessed the abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zVk1qM1El9o?si=2VWGEvkf_f_S3c3R\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond chose not to let the pregnancy take its natural course, which could at least have spared her son dismemberment, even if he passed away naturally in the womb. She ultimately refused to give her son a chance at life, and travelled to Denver with her husband and parents (the baby\u2019s grandparents) for an abortion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond described how her father found the abortion clinic that would end his grandson\u2019s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>More IVF, another diagnosis, and another abortion<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three months after the Bonds aborted baby Keith, they decided to implant another of the seven embryos they had made, at the urging of IVF specialists. Shockingly, this second son, whom the Bonds named Teddy, was <em>also<\/em> diagnosed with bilateral renal agenesis in the second trimester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, the Bonds traveled to Colorado for an abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surprisingly, at the end of her article, Bond expresses a desire to try IVF again, though she thinks Texas law makes pregnancy dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reality Check:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond implied that Texas pro-life laws prevented her from obtaining real medical care \u2014 but Texas law prohibits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-life-mother-act-clarify-weaken\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the direct and intentional killing of preborn children,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is not legitimate health care. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas law has abortion exceptions for when the pregnant mother\u2019s life is in danger \u2013\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/governor-texas-life-mother-act-concerning-provisions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even when danger of death is not imminent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Bond claimed, \u201cMy state doesn\u2019t love me,\u201d adding that she believes \u201cIt is getting more and more difficult to safely have a family\u201d in Texas. But it appears Bond&#8217;s own health was not endangered by her pregnancies; Bond&#8217;s fear was the possibility of having to observe the death of her babies shortly after birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bond echoed the popular media narrative that pro-life laws harm women \u2014\u00a0but as outlined above, pro-life laws exist to protect preborn life\u2013and not at the expense of women\u2019s well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tragically, Bond seems to have allowed this natural and understandable fear to drive her to seek the abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bonds\u2019 experiences and losses are truly heartrending and tragic, and may have been so even if Bond had carried her sons to term. However, the premature and intentional killing of their boys before birth only made the situation more painful and tragic \u2013 especially for their sons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout her article, Bond referred to her sons by their names and calls them her babies, refusing to dehumanize them. However, she also believes ending their lives intentionally was a merciful \u2014 even sacrificial \u2014 act. And perhaps tellingly, she chose to simply refer to Keith&#8217;s intentional killing by abortion as his &#8220;death.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Bottom Line:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like so many couples facing adverse prenatal diagnoses, the Bonds were told by medical professionals that their babies had no chance of survival, and society told them abortion was the most compassionate choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Couples like the Bonds deserve to know the truth about the value of life and about all possible medical options available to them to help save their children&#8217;s lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tragically, the stories of Keith and Teddy are now being exploited to promote more death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents should receive compassion and real medical help when experiencing complicated pregnancies.
