The Court sided with Pennsylvania and New Jersey in their years-long effort to force the Little Sisters of the\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BECKET (@becketfund) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/becketfund\/status\/1955683000957518332?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 13, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Senior Attorney for Becket, Diana Thomson, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/265943\/federal-court-rules-against-little-sisters-of-the-poor-in-latest-contraception-lawsuit\">Catholic News Agency<\/a> that this is the same case that led to victory for the sisters at the Supreme Court in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of dropping the case, Pennsylvania and New Jersey revitalized their cutting-floor arguments that they chose not to pursue at the Supreme Court last time and brought them in the district court,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The district court agreed with those arguments &#8220;even though the Supreme Court already blessed the rules,&#8221; she added, stating that the district court is &#8220;trying to find a loophole\u201d to the Supreme Court&#8217;s 2020 decision.<\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line:<\/h2>\n<p>Efforts to force Little Sisters of the Poor to pay for health care coverage for abortions and contraception have been ongoing for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Rienzi, president of Becket and lead attorney for the sisters, said, &#8220;It is absurd to think the Little Sisters might need yet another trip to the Supreme Court to end what has now been more than a dozen years of litigation over the same issue&#8230; We will fight as far as we need to fight to protect the Little Sisters\u2019 right to care for the elderly in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Little Sisters&#8217; appeal has been filed, and Thomson believes the Trump administration will file its own appeal since the lawsuit brought by New Jersey and Pennsylvania includes multiple federal agencies and officials.
