Many people in Ireland are making ends meet on an annual salary of \u20ac20,500, whereas abortion doctors are getting an average of \u20ac20,500 as a top up on their regular income just for offering abortion pills,&#8221; Mulroy said. &#8220;If there are negative consequences for the woman, the doctor simply refers them to a hospital.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mulroy continued:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>With the advent of telemedicine, a GP doesn\u2019t even have to have an in-person consultation with the woman. Instead, they can have a short phone call with the woman, make basic provisions for her to collect the mifepristone and misoprostol pills, and claim for \u20ac450.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>All the money that\u2019s being poured into the Irish abortion regime, which racks up tens of millions of euro, would be better served providing women in unplanned pregnancies with genuine supports.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The Backstory:<\/h2>\n<p>This shocking disclosure comes just weeks after the Irish Department of Health released statistics showing that abortion has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/265367\/abortions-in-ireland-up-300-percent-since-2018-referendum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skyrocketed<\/a> in the country since a 2018 vote to legalize it.<\/p>\n<p>Data from 2024 shows that there were 10,852 abortions in that year, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/politics-society\/2025\/07\/24\/ireland-abortion-rates-rise-5-years-251181\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">62.8% increase<\/a> over the 6,666 abortions committed in 2019, when abortions were first legally allowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a truly horrifying figure, and it\u2019s the opposite of what senior politicians promised the public would happen if they voted for repeal in 2018,\u201d Mulroy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/265367\/abortions-in-ireland-up-300-percent-since-2018-referendum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Catholic News Agency (CNA).<\/p>\n<p>The nation&#8217;s Catholic bishops have also spoken out against the increase, noting that the high numbers and vast support for abortion today are a far cry from the 2018 promises that it would be &#8220;rare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The government] has done nothing to reduce the numbers of abortions \u2026 and seems not to care why women choose abortion, or what happens to them afterwards,\u201d Bishop Kevin Doran of Elphin and Achonry told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/politics-society\/2025\/07\/24\/ireland-abortion-rates-rise-5-years-251181\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSV News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a world in which freedom of conscience and the right to peaceful protest are widely promoted and recognized, Irish healthcare professionals are penalized if they refuse to refer their clients for abortion, and citizens risk criminal prosecution if they engage in peaceful protest, even though the Garda Siochana (National Police) said that they did not need this legislation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line:<\/h2>\n<p>Mulroy told CNA that her organization is talking to politicians about ways to combat the rising abortion rates \u2014 and likely, those conversations will include ways that high abortion subsidies can better be used to serve women and families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spend a lot of time talking to politicians \u2014 even who might not necessarily be coming from a pro-life perspective, but who might share common ground on some of the issues associated with the abortion question. For example the need for more positive alternatives for women in unplanned pregnancy,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re talking about human lives here,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s not just like any other area of health care, where we\u2019re trying to reduce waiting lists or other things. This is not health care.
