Just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamaicaobserver.com\/2025\/08\/04\/jamaica-among-countries-lowest-fertility-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20 years<\/a> ago, the rate was an average of 2.5 births per woman.<\/p>\n<p>The new, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caribbeannationalweekly.com\/news\/jamaicas-fertility-rate-drops-to-1-3-among-the-lowest-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low rate<\/a> puts Jamaica on par with the countries experiencing the most population decline, including China, Japan, Greece, Italy, and South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>In many cases, people cite economic difficulties as one of the top reasons for limiting the number of children they choose to have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of 10,000 people who reported having or wanting to have children, 39 per cent reported that financial limitations were a factor that had affected or would affect their ability to realize their desired family size,\u201d the report notes.<\/p>\n<p>This data correlates with declining population numbers; the Planning Institute of Jamaica&#8217;s latest Economic and Social Survey Jamaica reported that the population declined by 0.1 percent in 2024, for a total population an estimated 2,700,400.<\/p>\n<h2>Commentary:<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cJamaica\u2019s current position is especially worrying. With a replacement birth rate of just 1.3 per cent, the population is shrinking at a time when productivity needs to increase. This demographic trajectory will continue to exert pressure on the country\u2019s ability to sustain growth,\u201d Dr. Nelson &#8220;Chris&#8221; Stokes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamaicaobserver.com\/2025\/08\/06\/population-woes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the Jamaica Observer.<\/p>\n<p>The population crisis has been in Jamaican news in recent months. Dr. Jackie Campbell <a href=\"https:\/\/radiojamaicanewsonline.com\/local\/more-people-opting-to-have-just-one-child-says-physician\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted in May<\/a> that many families are adamant that they only want one child \u2014 and she&#8217;s seeing more women seeking abortions, even though abortion is technically illegal in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I speak with my patients. I&#8217;m a family physician, and they will come in and they say, &#8216;Look here, Doc, I&#8217;m having one child. Children are expensive.&#8217; Men say that to me. Women say that. And the next thing I think that we need to talk about &#8211; this is opening a bag of worms here &#8211; is the fact that more and more persons are coming to my office, and they are pregnant females, young females, and they are requesting terminations of the pregnancy.
