Catholic<\/span><\/a> reports that<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> violations committed by unit administrators included errors in assessing whether people qualified for assisted suicide under law, potentially leading to illegal deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Documents obtained by The B.C. Catholic from the government on July 10 via a freedom-of-information (FOI) application\u00a0reveal thousands of paperwork errors surrounding the 2,767 assisted suicides carried out in 2023, as well as reporting failures and a major conflict of interest involving the unit\u2019s top administrator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amanda Achtman, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyingtomeetyou.com\/bio\">Dying to Meet You<\/a>, told Live Action News in an email:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The B.C. Catholic<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investigation reveals that the Canadian euthanasia\/MAID regime is replete with what are bureaucratically being described as \u2018Reporting Issues and Completion Errors.\u2019 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that there are numerous cases in British Columbia in which even Canada\u2019s extremely permissive euthanasia laws and policies are not being followed.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spreadsheet released to the outlet from the oversight unit shows that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2023 alone, the oversight unit found 2,833 \u2018reporting issues\u2019 and \u2018completion errors\u2019 in the paperwork for 2,767 MAiD deaths and for 1,041 cases in which euthanasia was applied for but not completed,\u201d the outlet reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The error rate in assessing assisted death eligibility requirements was 4.9% in 2023, according to data supplied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was alarming to read about the error rate in MAiD assessments in B.C.,\u201d University of British Columbia Law Professor Isabel Grant told The B.C. Catholic. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLooking at only one indicator \u2014 errors around the eligibility requirements \u2014 we see an error rate of 4.9 per cent. When we are talking about close to 3,000 deaths, that is a very high number.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astonishingly, a November 2023 memo addressed to the former British Columbia Deputy Minister of Health and written by an unknown bureaucrat, claims the unit should not to be \u201coverly strict\u201d about reporting infractions of assisted death regulations to authorities, <em>because such reporting could decrease assisted deaths despite a \u2018high demand\u2019 for it.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2026 Overly strict or severe use of referrals \u2026 may discourage physicians or nurse practitioners from providing MAiD despite \u2018high demand,\u2019\u201d the memo states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A separate FOI document provided in 2023\u00a0to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Deborah Cook, a Member of the Order of Canada who was recently inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, showed six cases between 2019 and 2023 in which a \u201cmedical assessor had concluded that a patient was eligible for MAiD even though the assessment \u2018did not find they met all individual eligibility criteria.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why It Matters:<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing in B.C. is evidence that the scales have been tipped in favour of death,\u201d said Alex Schadenberg<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grant similarly commented on British Columbia\u2019s extreme liberalization of assisted death, which in practice, goes beyond even the province\u2019s already broad legal limits:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe can see the approach of the British Columbia government to MAiD deaths\u2014err on the side of making MAiD accessible, not on the side of compliance with the Criminal Code.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the thousands of \u2018reporting issues\u2019 and \u2018completion errors\u2019 recorded by the MAiD oversight unit, The B.C. Catholic reported:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2018, the unit has made only 22 referrals to regulatory bodies for possible disciplinary action and just two referrals to law enforcement for potential criminal charges, according to an unattributed declaration appended to the end of the FOI document. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statement concludes by saying the referrals \u2018represent less than 0.2 per cent of the total number of cases of MAiD reviewed by the unit.\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the above administrative violations, The B.C. Catholic noted that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Columbia Ministry of Health\u2019s MAiD Oversight Unit is compromised by the fact that the unit\u2019s leader, Sara Bergen, also leads the overall administration of MAiD in British Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line:<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achtman, who meets regularly with Canadians impacted by the country\u2019s extreme assisted dying laws, told Live Action News:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadians deserve so much better. More and more, I am hearing from Canadians who are distressed about the circumstances of their loved ones death. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some find out about euthanasia only after the fact.
