Its &#8220;Virtual Health Centers (VHCs)&#8221; are popping up across the country as part of a larger <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-restructuring-outrage-fuels-donations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restructuring plan<\/a> put in place <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-closures-restructuring-telehealth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Key Takeaways:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2020, Planned Parenthood began offering telehealth services at all of its affiliates (49 at the time).<\/li>\n<li>The pressure to remain financially solvent has driven Planned Parenthood to create and expand its Virtual Health Clinics as well.<\/li>\n<li>Though multiple affiliates have announced the closures of brick-and-mortar facilities, many of those affiliates have also announced the expansion of their telehealth offerings and launch of Virtual Health Clinics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Details:<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Telehealth vs. Virtual Health Centers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As the American Life League&#8217;s (ALL) <a href=\"https:\/\/all.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/STOPP_2025_Facilities_final-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 Planned Parenthood facilities<\/a> report explained:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The main difference between virtual health centers and telehealth visits is that the virtual health center is operated by a state\u2019s Planned Parenthood affiliate, and only customers living in that specific state can make these appointments. Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/judge-expanded-injunction-against-defunding-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court documents<\/a> reveal that today, the organization has consolidated to <em>47<\/em> affiliates.<\/p>\n<p>According to ALL, &#8220;133 of the 509 Planned Parenthood facilities offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/get-care\/get-care-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telehealth<\/a> specifically for abortion pills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_335600\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-335600\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-335600\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Planned-Parenthood-telehealth-in-all-50-states-2020-652x700.jpg\" alt=\"Planned Parenthood telehealth in all 50 states 2020\" width=\"500\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Planned-Parenthood-telehealth-in-all-50-states-2020-652x700.jpg 652w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Planned-Parenthood-telehealth-in-all-50-states-2020-279x300.jpg 279w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Planned-Parenthood-telehealth-in-all-50-states-2020-768x825.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Planned-Parenthood-telehealth-in-all-50-states-2020-500x537.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Planned-Parenthood-telehealth-in-all-50-states-2020.jpg 918w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-335600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planned Parenthood telehealth in all 50 states 2020<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><b>Increasing Virtual Health Centers Due to &#8220;New Pressures&#8221;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In May, Caitlin Myers, a Middlebury College economics professor who <a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/6e360741bfd84db79d5db774a1147815\/page\/Page\/?views=Dashboard---October-10\">maps brick-and-mortar abortion clinics<\/a> across the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/05\/02\/nx-s1-5382347\/new-financial-pressures-forcing-planned-parenthood-to-close-some-clinics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> NPR that\u00a0the rise of telehealth abortion has put &#8220;new pressures in the older-school, brick-and-mortar facilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pro-abortion group #WeCount <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-group-telehealth-abortions-rising-skeptical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>, \u201cBy the end of 2024, 1 in 4 abortions was provided via telehealth,&#8221; and in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/ec\/6d\/ec6da0d6-98e5-4278-8d11-99a5cba8e615\/2024-ppfa-annualreport-c3-digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023-24<\/a> report, Planned Parenthood announced that \u201cVirtual Health Centers (VHC) have been introduced at 23 Planned Parenthood affiliates,&#8221; with &#8220;[p]atients book[ing] more than 47,000 appointments through VHCs last year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet ALL&#8217;s more recent 2025 analysis stated that Planned Parenthood now operates &#8220;43 of these virtual health centers in 34 states, with some affiliates operating two to three in one state,&#8221; and &#8220;23 offer abortion pills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/record-breaking-planned-parenthood-annual-abortions-400k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion corporation<\/a> recently <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/overwhelming-majority-planned-parenthood-abortions-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> 70% of its abortion business is done by abortion pill, which is no longer required to be dispensed at <em>in-person<\/em>\u00a0appointments. The Biden FDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-permanently-loosens-abortion-pill-safety-measure\/\">permanently dropped<\/a>\u00a0this requirement in 2021.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Virtual Health Center Growth Over Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>2020:<\/strong> <strong>Planned Parenthood Greater New York<\/strong> (PPGNY) launched &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/new-york\/new-york\/10012\/virtual-health-center-of-ppgny-vc-3934-91110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual health care services<\/a> to connect patients to their trusted providers without having to visit a health center,&#8221; reported the <a href=\"https:\/\/hudsonvalleypress.com\/2020\/04\/08\/planned-parenthood-of-greater-new-york-launches-telehealth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hudson Valley Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2023:<\/strong> <strong>Planned Parenthood Pasadena &amp; San Gabriel Valley<\/strong> (PSGV) expanded abortion access by &#8220;launching a new abortion pill via telehealth service.&#8221; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-pasadena-san-gabriel-valley\/get-involved-locally\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-pasadena-san-gabriel-valley-expands-abortion-access-by-launching-a-new-abortion-pill-via-telehealth-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a> claimed that PSGV&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/california\/pasadena\/91104\/california-virtual-health-center-of-pasadena-and-san-gabriel-valley-vc-10000-90090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virtual Health Center<\/a> &#8220;aims to increase access to safe and legal abortion care and provide individuals with a convenient and confidential option to receive care from a Planned Parenthood provider they trust.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2023:<\/strong> The <strong>Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas<\/strong> (PPGTX) <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/plannedparenthoodofgreatertx\/docs\/2023_annual_report-web-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Impact Report<\/a> announced the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/texas\/dallas\/75231\/greater-texas-virtual-health-center-vc-3933-91620\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Texas Virtual Health Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2025 (March):<\/strong> <strong>Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawai\u02bbi, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky<\/strong> (PPGNHAIK) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-great-northwest-hawaii-alaska-indiana-kentuck\/press\/planned-parenthood-opens-new-virtual-health-center-in-kentucky-expanding-crucial-care-statewide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the &#8220;launch of its\u00a0<a id=\"OWA11a6e0be-b324-f94d-2cc2-949307cb4985\" title=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/kentucky\/louisville\/40203\/kentucky-virtual-health-center-vc-21951-91810\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/kentucky\/louisville\/40203\/kentucky-virtual-health-center-vc-21951-91810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virtual Health Center in Kentucky<\/a>&#8221; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-great-northwest-hawaii-alaska-indiana-kentuck\/press\/planned-parenthood-opens-new-virtual-health-center-in-indiana-to-mitigate-ongoing-health-care-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> its\u00a0&#8220;<a id=\"OWA12fc9fc6-8ed2-fc0a-6ff9-27a74c517df6\" title=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/indiana\/mishawaka\/46545\/indiana-virtual-health-center-vc-21950-91810\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/indiana\/mishawaka\/46545\/indiana-virtual-health-center-vc-21950-91810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virtual Health Center in Indiana<\/a>&#8221; along with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-great-northwest-hawaii-alaska-indiana-kentuck\/press\/planned-parenthood-opens-new-virtual-health-center-in-idaho-expanding-crucial-care-statewide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual<\/a> center in Idaho. PPGNHAIK also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-great-northwest-hawaii-alaska-indiana-kentuck\/press\/planned-parenthood-launched-western-washington-virtual-health-center-expanding-access-to-care-amid-increased-patient-need\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> &#8220;the launch of our new Virtual Health Center [VHC] &#8221; in Washington State, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-great-northwest-hawaii-alaska-indiana-kentuck\/press\/planned-parenthood-launched-western-washington-virtual-health-center-expanding-access-to-care-amid-increased-patient-need\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Washington<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-great-northwest-hawaii-alaska-indiana-kentuck\/press\/planned-parenthood-hawai-i-opens-virtual-health-center-increasing-access-to-health-care-across-the-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hawaii<\/a>, with the VHC touted as &#8220;a lifeline, bringing expert, nonjudgmental care directly to patients, no matter where they live.&#8221; The month prior, in February, PPGNHAIK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-great-northwest-hawaii-alaska-indiana-kentuck\/press\/planned-parenthood-alaska-opens-virtual-health-center-increasing-access-to-health-care-across-the-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0 the launch of its Virtual Health Center in Alaska. These centers will offer abortion and so-called &#8216;gender-affirming care,&#8217; as well as others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2025 (May):<\/strong> <strong>Planned Parenthood of Michigan<\/strong> (PPMI) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-michigan\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-michigan-launches-virtual-health-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> its VHC launch, where clients can &#8220;access birth control, emergency contraception, hormone therapy, and medication abortion through one simple-to-navigate virtual health center.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2025 (estimated):<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">While a VHC <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-hudson-peconic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operated<\/a> by <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/new-york\/white-plains\/10607\/virtual-health-center-of-pphp-vc-21952-91220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic<\/a> (PPHP) doesn&#8217;t show an official launch date or list abortion under services, the first archive for that center shows April 2025. Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest already has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-pacific-southwest\/campaigns\/telehealth-abortion-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telehealth abortion center<\/a>, where, despite the federal Comstock Act which <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/federal-law-prohibit-abortion-drugs-mail-enforced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prohibits<\/a> the mailing of abortion drugs, the facility will ship the pills &#8220;via FedEx in discreet packaging in one to three business days,&#8221; according to its website. Planned Parenthood currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operates<\/a> two virtual health centers in the state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Illinois:<\/strong> When recent closures in Illinois were announced, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250122220417\/https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/health-medicine\/2025\/01\/22\/planned-parenthood-illinois-close-clinics-expand-virtual-care-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WBEZ reported<\/a> &#8220;Planned Parenthood intends to&#8230; begin offering more telehealth appointments and medication abortions through the PPDirect app.&#8221; In fact, Planned Parenthood of Illinois had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-illinois\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-illinois-restructures-to-ensure-sustainability-for-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-closures-restructuring-telehealth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plan<\/a> to \u201cexpand[] virtual options via telehealth appointments and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthooddirect.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PPDirect app<\/a> to minimize patient disruption.\u201d The affiliate operates VHCs in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/illinois\/chicago\/60602\/virtual-center-of-ppil-vc-3879-90430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/illinois\/fairview-heights\/62208\/virtual-center-of-fairview-heights-vc-3880-90770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairview Heights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indiana:<\/strong> In closing a facility in Indiana, <a href=\"https:\/\/readlion.com\/planned-parenthood-locations-announce-closings-in-three-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Redlion.com<\/a> reported that &#8220;Planned Parenthood\u2019s Indiana regional president, Rebecca Gibron, said it\u2019s a move to consolidate resources and focus on the organization\u2019s remaining health centers and growing its telehealth operations.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lpm.org\/news\/2025-07-22\/planned-parenthood-closing-evansville-ind-center-to-focus-resources-on-other-clinics-telehealth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LMP.org<\/a> reported that its clients &#8220;will be able to access&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/indianacapitalchronicle.com\/briefs\/indiana-planned-parenthood-affiliate-opens-virtual-clinic\/#:~:text=The%20Indiana%20Planned%20Parenthood%20affiliate,about%20convenience%20%E2%80%94%20it's%20about%20survival.\">expanded telehealth options<\/a>.&#8221; The affiliate announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianacapitalchronicle.com\/briefs\/indiana-planned-parenthood-affiliate-opens-virtual-clinic\/#:~:text=The%20Indiana%20Planned%20Parenthood%20affiliate,about%20convenience%20%E2%80%94%20it's%20about%20survival.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opening<\/a> of its &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/indiana\/mishawaka\/46545\/indiana-virtual-health-center-vc-21950-91810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual center<\/a>&#8221; in Indiana earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iowa\/Minnesota:<\/strong> While announcing closures, Planned Parenthood North Central States (PPNCS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/planned-parenthood-affiliate-close-clinics-iowa-minnesota-rcna208890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0NBC it planned to\u00a0<em>keep investing in telemedicine services<\/em> and sees 20,000 patients a year virtually. In May, PPNCS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-north-central-states\/about-ppncs\/media-relations\/planned-parenthood-north-central-states-announces-footprint-and-staffing-changes-as-dangerous-attacks-on-care-continue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> &#8220;In the coming year, PPNCS will reduce the number of brick-and-mortar sites to create regional centers for onsite care while continuing to invest in virtual and online care.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michigan:<\/strong> Planned Parenthood of Michigan (PPMI) previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-michigan\/newsroom\/in-the-face-of-historic-attacks-and-funding-threats-planned-parenthood-of-michigan-is-restructuring-operations-statewide-to-protect-the-organizations-long-term-sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> plans to \u201crestructure,\u201d consolidate, and \u201cpermanently close\u201d multiple facilities, adding that \u201cover the next few months\u201d PPMI would \u201cwork to expand its Virtual Health Center to offer telehealth 7 days per week.\u201d PPMI told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganpublic.org\/health\/2025-04-02\/planned-parenthood-of-michigan-closing-4-clinics-cutting-10-of-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan Public Radio<\/a> earlier this year it was planning to expand &#8220;telehealth capacity by 40% by summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 20% of PPMI&#8217;s patients were telehealth patients in FY 2024 (10,500 out of 51,500 patients total). But PPMI leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganpublic.org\/health\/2025-04-02\/planned-parenthood-of-michigan-closing-4-clinics-cutting-10-of-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> media they want to increase telehealth services in the state. \u201cPPMI leaders said they\u2019re hoping to help offset the closures by ramping up telehealth access, to eventually be able to offer 40% more virtual appointments than they currently do, including new weekend and evening hours. \u2018With the expansion of telehealth, I think we\u2019ll actually be able to see more patients,\u2019\u201d said PPMI president and CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miplannedparenthood.org\/team\/paula-thornton-greear\">Paula Thornton Greear<\/a>. \u201cPPMI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/michigan\/ann-arbor\/48108\/michigan-virtual-health-center-vc-3929-90630\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual health center<\/a> is \u2018our most popular health center.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>New York:<\/strong> Closures have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-close-dangerous-manhattan-abortion-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> in New York where PPGNY operates a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/new-york\/new-york\/10012\/virtual-health-center-of-ppgny-vc-3934-91110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VHC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ohio:<\/strong> Last month, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2025\/07\/18\/southwest-ohio-to-lose-two-health-clinics-over-federal-state-budget-medicaid-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closing<\/a> of its Springfield and Hamilton clinics, yet PPSWO &#8220;will still provide telehealth services,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2025\/07\/18\/southwest-ohio-to-lose-two-health-clinics-over-federal-state-budget-medicaid-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> the Ohio Capital Journal. Nan Whaley, president and CEO of Southwest Ohio, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/17\/planned-parenthood-closing-two-locations\/85257112007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Cincinnati.com it was &#8220;in the organization&#8217;s best interest to close&#8221; the facilities &#8220;to preserve access to abortion services and gender-affirming care for patients coming from across the region.&#8221; PPSWO operates a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/ohio\/cincinnati\/45219\/southwest-ohio-virtual-health-center-vc-10038-91260\">virtual health center<\/a> in the state, as does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/health-center\/ohio\/akron\/44302\/greater-ohio-virtual-health-center-vc-3931-91230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas:<\/strong> The &#8220;closure&#8221; of Planned Parenthood in Tyler, Texas, was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-transitions-in-person-texas-telehealth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not actually a closure<\/a>, as Planned Parenthood was working to expand telehealth there.
