Impoverished women, women with disabilities, and those stigmatized by their communities are among those usually targeted. Moreover, pressured by pro-abortion global institutions such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedocs.worldbank.org\/en\/doc\/203811615455823498-0240021968\/original\/WorldBankGroupArchivesFolder1837050.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Indian government enforced mass sterilization campaigns meant to decrease birth rates in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, many victims of these forced sterilization campaigns, such as economically impoverished men who had to undergo mandatory vasectomies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-30040790\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perished<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to failed surgeries and terrible health conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-30040790\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> science journalist Mara Hvistendahl, the BBC had this to say about 1970s India:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An astonishing 6.2 million Indian men were sterilised in just a year, which was \u201815 times the number of people sterilised by the Nazis\u2019. India has a dark history of state-sponsored population control, often with eugenic aims &#8211; targeting the poor and underprivileged.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BBC article added:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since family planning efforts began in the 1970s, India has focused its population control efforts on women, even though, as scientists say, sterilisations are easier to perform in men. \u2018This may be because women are deemed less likely to protest,&#8221; says Ms Hvistendahl.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alarmingly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-30040790\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sterilization campaigns in India still persisted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even into the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-30040790\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21st century,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mainly targeting impoverished rural women with insufficient informed consent.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/164.100.47.132\/Annexture_New\/lsq15\/11\/au4404.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 700 deaths<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were reported due to botched surgeries between 2009 and 2012,\u201d the BBC reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, sterilization procedures are frequently performed under unethical, unsafe and unhygienic conditions. In 2014, 15 women<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-29999874\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost their lives<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in sterilization camps in India\u2019s Chhattisgarh due to mediocre medical standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the Indian government\u2019s (and their various pro-abortion international backers\u2019) singling out of rural and impoverished communities for sterilization has further entrenched contemporary mistrust among various groups in Indian society. Many sterilized men and women or those targeted for sterilization are either disabled and\/or hail from Scheduled Castes or lower socioeconomic groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mass sterilization campaigns supported by successive Indian administrations have left a grim mark on India\u2019s history, serving as unhappy reminders of abuses of state power at the expense of vulnerable citizens. Yet the reprehensible practice still lingers on to this very day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A March 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/humanrights\/2023\/03\/20\/forced-sterilization-of-disabled-women-in-india-a-tale-of-lost-autonomy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published on the website of the London School of Economics (LSE) lambasted contemporary sterilization practices in India:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>With a growing population of more than 1 billion people, even today successive Indian governments have been accused of performing involuntary sterilization camps in unsanitary and unsafe conditions that often target the poor and vulnerable sections of society as a method of population control.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Governments at the state and district level are allocated funds for family planning, which often assigns certain numbers or targets for sterilizing the population as a mode of permanent contraception.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In 2020, the state of Madhya Pradesh issued a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/bhopal\/govt-transfers-nhm-director-scraps-sterilisation-circular\/articleshow\/74249580.cms\">circular<\/a> to multi-purpose health workers (MPHWs) to persuade at least 5 willing male beneficiaries for sterilization, and any failure to complete the given task would result in consequences ranging from their salaries being withheld to a compulsory retirement. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>While the government repealed the order after strong backlash from citizens and opposition political parties, this target oriented approach towards population control still poses a threat to the vulnerable population, particularly the disabled community\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><b>Japan<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Japan, the insidious practice of forced sterilization marks a dark aspect of its 20th century history. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formally endorsed under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-65958119\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1948 Eugenic Protection Law<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enacted in 1948 and not repealed until 1996, the sterilization policy targeted individuals regarded as \u201cinferior,\u201d including those with mental disorders or hereditary diseases, echoing eugenic ideologies rampant in the first half of the 20th century. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the law\u2019s almost 50 years of implementation, a staggering 25,000 people were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/japans-dark-history-of-forced-sterilisation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forcibly sterilized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with at least 16,500 procedures conducted without consent, leaving some victims <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-65958119\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as young as nine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having to deal with the fallout of a lifetime of infertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The physical ramifications of Japan\u2019s forced sterilization programs were life-changing and usually traumatic. The invasiveness of sterilization procedures gave rise to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/japans-dark-history-of-forced-sterilisation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health issues, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of reproductive capacities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many victims had to go for surgery <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sufficient information or consent, or were deceived about the actual nature of the procedure. For instance, victims were sometimes told they were going through routine appendectomies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u00a0campaigns deeply traumatized victims, causing them long-term emotional distress. Many sterilized individuals and their families had to endure years of social alienation due to societal views that their bodies had \u201cdefects.\u201d Victims even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c0krnjy72j0o\">concealed<\/a> their surgeries from close family members to avoid being shunned due to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/shows\/3026018\/\">social stigma<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/22\/anger-in-japan-as-report-reveals-children-were-forcibly-sterilised\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quoting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Junko Iizuka, a victim of Japan\u2019s forced sterilization laws, The Guardian reported:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A high court rejected demands for damages from two women, including<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/apr\/04\/they-stole-my-life-away-women-forcibly-sterilised-by-japan-speak-out\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junko Iizuka<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was 16 when she was taken to a clinic in north-east Japan and forced to have a mystery operation that, she later discovered, would prevent her from ever having children.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Eugenics surgery deprived me of all of my modest dreams of a happy marriage and children,&#8221; Iizuka, 77, told reporters this week.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iizuka, who goes by a pseudonym and disguises her face with a hat and mask in public, said the procedure had destroyed her most important relationships.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;As soon as I told my husband, whom I trusted, that I had had surgery and was unable to have children, he left me and demanded a divorce,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I became mentally ill and was unable to work. I have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Eugenics surgery turned my life upside down.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forced sterilization in Japan led to immense physical, psychological, and social distress for thousands of victims, including children, many of whom underwent sterilization procedures without their knowledge or consent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the country&#8217;s eugenics law was repealed in 1996, Japan has yet to fully grapple with this dark side of its history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Bottom Line:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While long-standing legal actions, government apologies, and financial compensation initiatives may seem to mitigate the long-term suffering to many of India\u2019s and Japan\u2019s sterilization victims, some wounds may just never heal by financial and legal means alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many victims suffer from an inability to reproduce due to their governments\u2019 deceptive and coercive top-down population control and eugenicist policies.
