Planned Parenthood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthoodaction.org\/pressroom\/planned-parenthood-action-fund-statement-on-senate-republicans-vote-to-defund-planned-parenthood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> its defunding could result in the closure of up to 200 facilities.<\/p>\n<p>To make up that anticipated lost revenue, Planned Parenthood began <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/states-bail-out-planned-parenthood-federal-defunding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeting<\/a> abortion-friendly states and using the media to evoke empathy to raise funds. But closures at the abortion corporation have occurred or have been planned for many reasons: decreasing clients, the deliberate shift to telehealth, the unionizing of staff, and multiple scandals, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood&#8217;s past and present have been scandal-ridden:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was founded based on eugenic philosophies.<\/li>\n<li>It has been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reject-planned-parenthood-discrimination-funded-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> by staffers and management of systemic discrimination.<\/li>\n<li>It utilizes <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/7-ways-planned-parenthood-deceptive-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deceptive marketing<\/a><\/li>\n<li>It regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-skirting-federal-requirements-taxpayer-dollars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violates requirements<\/a> to maintain taxpayer funding.<\/li>\n<li>It has failed\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reject-planned-parenthood-failed-victims-sexual-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report child sexual abuse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reject-planned-parenthood-failure-protect-patient-privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protect patient privacy<\/a>, and has been accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-abuses-piling-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraud and abuse<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As if that weren&#8217;t enough, the corporation also&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8230; disseminates <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-undercover-video-exposing-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unscientific, fabricated and misleading medical information<\/a> to women considering abortions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Byb6ibQb4Nc\">misinforms women<\/a>\u00a0about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Byb6ibQb4Nc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">development<\/a>\u00a0of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/congress-debates-planned-parenthood-funding-new-videos-reveal-abortion-chain-refusing-help-pregnant-women-wanting-carry-babies-term\/\">preborn babies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8230; has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/abortioncorporation\/\">poor standard of care<\/a> for clients (with former managers stating they treated women \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0PUFJwiHlJM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like cattle<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8230; offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_WXjoqbStEM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ultrasound<\/a> only for women planning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/defund-battle-continues-live-action-exposes-planned-parenthoods-ultrasounds-used-killing-not-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abort<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Defunding Planned Parenthood would seem reasonable, yet an Obama-appointed judge put the defunding of the corporation on <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/obama-judge-temporarily-blocks-defunding-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hold<\/a> by issuing a <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mad.286600\/gov.uscourts.mad.286600.18.0.pdf\">temporary restraining order<\/a>, which was immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hhs-memo-court-planned-parenthood-taxpayer-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposed<\/a> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mad.286600\/gov.uscourts.mad.286600.53.0.pdf\">memorandum in opposition<\/a> by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). On July 21, 2025, the judge <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/judge-preliminary-injunction-planned-parenthood-funded-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> a temporary <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mad.286600\/gov.uscourts.mad.286600.62.0_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">injunction<\/a>, granting Planned Parenthood\u2019s request, forcing taxpayers to keep funding it while its lawsuit against the Trump administration proceeds.<\/p>\n<h2>By The Numbers:<\/h2>\n<p>Planned Parenthood&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/ec\/6d\/ec6da0d6-98e5-4278-8d11-99a5cba8e615\/2024-ppfa-annualreport-c3-digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">net assets and total liabilities<\/a> (ending on June 30, 2024) showed has risen to <strong>$3.1B<\/strong>, (the <strong>highest ever recorded<\/strong>). Yet, thanks to effective marketing, the organization is evoking sympathy, despite only serving <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/top-myths-debunked-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an estimated 2%<\/a> of American women of reproductive age.<\/p>\n<p>According to its own <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-report-record-high-abortions-drop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual reports<\/a>, its legitimate health care services have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-womens-health-plummeting-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plummeted<\/a>\u00a0over the years, while abortions have soared to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/decade-planned-parenthood-abortions-high-health-plummet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record highs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Its latest annual reports reveal that it <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-details-planned-parenthood-record-abortions-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committed<\/a> over 400,000 abortions while receiving nearly $800 million from taxpayers. This is a <strong>100% increase in abortions<\/strong> and a <strong>291% increase<\/strong> in taxpayer funding (nearly $203M v $792M) since 2000. In addition, \u201cactive individual contributors\u201d at Planned Parenthood fell nearly 13% (from 576,000 the prior year) and 31% (from 727,000) in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pianned-parenthoods-past-decade-3-3-million-abortions-6-billion-taxpayer-dollars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021-22<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000, Planned Parenthood has committed <strong>over 7.5M abortions<\/strong> (7,534, 941) while providing just 323,000 prenatal care services, and received nearly <strong>$11.4B<\/strong> from taxpayers, accumulating nearly $2.2B in <em>excess<\/em> revenue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clients: Down nearly <strong>33% <\/strong>from 2006.<\/li>\n<li>Prenatal Care: Down 77% from its high in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/2009-2010-Planned-Parenthood-Annual-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2010<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Overall cancer screenings: Down over 80% since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/2005-2006-Planned-Parenthood-Annual-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2004<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Breast screenings: Plummeted over 82% since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerformedicalprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2000_-_2001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2000<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Pap tests: Down over 85% since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/2005-2006-Planned-Parenthood-Annual-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2004<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Adoption Referrals: Fallen over 56% since <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2007-2008-Planned-Parenthood-Annual-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2007<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Total services: <strong>33% decrease<\/strong> since 2006.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which do not commit abortions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reject-planned-parenthood-cashing-in-taxpayers-expense\/\">served<\/a>\u00a0<i>over 15 times<\/i>\u00a0as many men and women and\u00a0<i>nearly 10 times<\/i> as many women as Planned Parenthood in 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reject-planned-parenthood-cashing-in-taxpayers-expense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outnumbering<\/a>\u00a0Planned Parenthood centers 25 to 1.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What We&#8217;re Seeing:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To avoid being defunded of federal Medicaid dollars, Planned Parenthood would be required to stop committing abortions. Yet its president, Alexis McGill Johnson, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/02\/us\/politics\/planned-parenthood-abortions-senate-medicaid-funding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>, \u201cThere is not now, and has never been, a plan to stop providing abortion care in the hopes of preserving federal funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood often claims that abortion is <em>not<\/em> a significant part of its business model, but whenever abortion is threatened, somehow that prompts a sudden decision to downsize or lay off staffers, all while playing the victim and raking in millions from empathetic donors.<\/p>\n<p>And that money isn&#8217;t always used to help clients.<\/p>\n<p>Former president Cecile Richards said it was her goal to make the corporation into the largest ever \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-aim-largest-kick-butt-political-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kick butt political organization<\/a>\u201d \u2013 and as a result, the corporation has made many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-planned-parenthood-money-laundering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political alliances<\/a>\u00a0that benefit its bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, as Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-gargantuan-amounts-funds-funneled-political\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented, Planned Parenthood Federation of America was accused by those who oversee abortion funds of \u201csiphon[ing] support\u201d and then \u201cfunnel[ing] that money into campaign bank accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>In The Red Long Before Defunding<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nationally, Planned Parenthood has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-abuses-piling-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mired in controversies<\/a>\u00a0and was already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-lost-400000-donors-last-year\/\">bleeding donors<\/a>\u00a0in 2018, losing 400,000 over the course of the year, according to its own reports.<\/p>\n<p>Just days after the one-year defunding measure was signed into law, Planned Parenthood was allegedly sending out pink slips, even though the defunding had already been put on hold. But in truth, some affiliates had financial problems long before the defunding provision was ever proposed.<\/p>\n<p>Back in January of this year, in <em>pro-abortion<\/em> Illinois where <strong>all<\/strong> Medicaid abortions are fully taxpayer-funded, Planned Parenthood <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-illinois-restructures-downsizes-closing-centers\/\">announced the planned closures<\/a> of <strong>four<\/strong> of its facilities. It blamed an &#8220;increase in patient volume, coupled with low reimbursement rates from insurers and rising costs of providing care,&#8221; adding that downsizing staff and closing centers was &#8220;difficult but necessary to operate a sustainable organization&#8230;.\u201d But it also said it would <strong><em>add the abortion pill to its virtual services<\/em><\/strong> by way of the PP Direct app, stating that doing so would &#8220;expand[] access, reduce[] wait times at health centers and provide[] the right care patients need wherever they are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/overwhelming-majority-planned-parenthood-abortions-pill\/\">70% of its abortion business is via the abortion pill<\/a>, why <em>wouldn&#8217;t<\/em> they make this move for financial reasons?<\/p>\n<p>Illinois isn&#8217;t alone:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2017<\/strong>: Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-rocky-mountains\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-the-rocky-mountains-statement-on-health-center-closures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a &#8220;strategic decision&#8221; to allow it &#8220;to maintain a fiscally solvent operation that will keep our doors open to patients in the region for the long term&#8221; \u2014 <em><strong>by closing facilities<\/strong><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2020<\/strong>: Planned Parenthood of Southern New England <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-southern-new-england\/about-us\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-southern-new-england-must-close-danielson-and-old-saybrook-health-centers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the permanent closure of two Connecticut centers due to &#8220;financial challenges presented by COVID-19.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>2022<\/strong>: Planned Parenthood New England (PPNNE) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-northern-new-england\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-northern-new-england-announces-sustainability-plan-to-meet-the-challenges-of-the-moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a plan to &#8220;ensure the organization is sustainable&#8221; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-northern-new-england\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-northern-new-england-to-close-st-johnsbury-vermont-health-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-closure-vermont-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facility closures<\/a> due to an $8 million deficit \u2014 something other affiliates <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-facility-closures-deficits-ruse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> blamed as well. &#8220;The shortfall is in addition to a projected $5 million deficit for the fiscal year that ended on June 30,&#8221; reported <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2024\/08\/01\/planned-parenthood-projects-multimillion-dollar-deficit-in-vermont-new-hampshire-and-maine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VTDigger.org<\/a>. Then, earlier this year PPNNE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-northern-new-england\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-northern-new-england-to-close-st-johnsbury-vermont-health-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the closure of a Vermont facility, writing, &#8220;Over the past five years, PPNNE has faced numerous operational challenges in providing reproductive and sexual health care services&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But planned closures and layoffs at Planned Parenthood didn&#8217;t stop there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dEQATRE-2kQ?si=oK-7Sc7PspU2x6Bj\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What&#8217;s Happening:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Planned Parenthood Great Rivers<\/strong> <strong>(PPGR)<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-great-rivers\/newsroom\/press-releases\/planned-parenthood-great-rivers-reduces-staff-due-to-medicaid-cuts-all-health-centers-open-for-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> on July 18th its plans to &#8220;reduce its administrative workforce&#8221; by August 1, 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/fox2now.com\/news\/missouri\/planned-parenthood-lays-off-employees-due-to-medicaid-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claiming<\/a> politicians are \u201cforcing health care providers\u201d to make challenging choices in order to keep their businesses alive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The St. Louis-based organization did not say how many people will lose their jobs. The nonprofit made the announcement&#8230; in response to cuts to Missouri\u2019s Medicaid,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlpr.org\/news-briefs\/2025-07-18\/planned-parenthood-great-rivers-cu-administrative-jobs-keep-doors-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> the local NPR affiliate.<\/p>\n<p>PPGR <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committed<\/a> nearly 10,000 abortions in 2022-23 (up from the <a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/d9\/98\/d9986128-cad5-4784-a933-c5fa8947e36c\/ppslrswmo_2022_annual_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous year<\/a>) and was bleeding operating dollars well before any federal defunding bill. In 2022-2023, PPGR <a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/02\/bc\/02bc84d7-e376-4d0e-814d-60afb8410008\/ppgr_impact_report_2022-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a> a $1.7M surplus \u2014 but that was a $5 million drop from <a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/d9\/98\/d9986128-cad5-4784-a933-c5fa8947e36c\/ppslrswmo_2022_annual_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021-22<\/a> and a $3.3M drop from <a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/fd\/9c\/fd9c2107-2874-4f29-91d2-a8472eea25b4\/ppslrswmo_2021_annual_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020-21<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bHYm1_7fGHQ?si=84WR3PuCiBOXNoyi\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region (PPSWOR)<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-southwest-ohio\/who-we-are\/newsroom\/medicaid-defund-forces-planned-parenthood-southwest-ohio-health-center-closures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> the upcoming closure of its health centers in Springfield and Hamilton (which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/17\/planned-parenthood-closing-two-locations\/85257112007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">do not<\/a> commit abortions), blaming the closures on the &#8220;devastating impact of state and federal political attacks&#8230;.\u201d PPSWOR <a href=\"https:\/\/mercercountyoutlook.net\/2025\/07\/17\/medicaid-defund-forces-planned-parenthood-southwest-ohio-health-center-closures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a>, &#8220;While not all positions can be retained, every effort is being made to minimize layoffs and ease the transition for affected employees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Nan Whaley, president and CEO of the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/07\/17\/planned-parenthood-closing-two-locations\/85257112007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Make no mistake: This was not a decision made by Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region. We took every possible step to keep these centers open, but the devastating impact of state and federal political attacks has forced us into this very difficult position.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is an interesting statement, because while PPSWOR&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/4c\/52\/4c52d73e-bc44-4a73-a8f1-d3b254246356\/annual_report_2024_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023-24 annual report<\/a> showed nearly <strong>$13M in revenue<\/strong>, it also showed <strong>over $17M in expenses<\/strong> (a $4M deficit) while committing nearly 4,000 abortions. In fact, the affiliate has had financial difficulties for years, failing to break even in <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/ppswohio\/docs\/annual_report_2023_3_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/ppswohio\/docs\/annual_report_2020_-_final_low_resolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the media predictably (and falsely) blamed the changes on the blocked defunding provision:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V4hBZan9B4w?si=kdALlmyykSAz2uqk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM)<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/states-bail-out-planned-parenthood-federal-defunding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejected a memo<\/a> suggesting that it end abortions, and recently &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/1e\/4b\/1e4bb250-204e-41e4-b3b3-1eb0499d8704\/web_-_donor_newsletter_winter_25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a> $16 million fund for subsidized care&#8221; not covered by state\/federal dollars \u2014 yet it, too, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warntracker.com\/company\/planned-parenthood-mar-monte#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatening<\/a> layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Other California Planned Parenthoods have been <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Beachdudeca\/status\/1935883927878844746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issuing<\/a> layoff <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Beachdudeca\/status\/1945307649475801158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warnings<\/a> as well, though the state <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/states-bail-out-planned-parenthood-federal-defunding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funds<\/a> abortions. In May, unionized staffers in the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.com\/2025\/05\/13\/central-coast-planned-parenthood-staff-vote-to-authorize-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> Planned Parenthood has a &#8220;staffing crisis&#8221; and \u201cpatient safety issues,\u201d adding that management \u201ccontinues to reject their efforts and commits unfair labor practices in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In FY24, PPMM subsidized&#8230; 5,786 abortion care patients, totaling more than $4.7 million,&#8221; the affiliate&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppmmimpactreport.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">impact report<\/a> claimed. But a closer look at the affiliate&#8217;s 990 report shows that in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montereycountygives.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/planned_parenthood_mar_monte.media_.e990.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent years<\/a>, PPMM&#8217;s balance sheet was <em><strong>in the red by millions<\/strong><\/em> while its net assets remained healthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parenthood Planned Parenthood North Central States (PPNCS)<\/strong> made a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-north-central-states\/about-ppncs\/media-relations\/planned-parenthood-north-central-states-announces-footprint-and-staffing-changes-as-dangerous-attacks-on-care-continue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strategic prioritization<\/a> of cost savings&#8221; back in May &#8212; prior to its defunding &#8212; \u00a0by choosing to &#8220;close and consolidate eight health centers with 66 staff members impacted by layoffs and an additional 37 staff receiving offers of reassignment&#8230; resulting in the elimination of 35 additional positions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It claimed:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The restructure comes as patient needs and preferences have changed, the broken aspects of our health care system have intensified, the organization\u2019s Minnesota Title X funds have been frozen, and the U.S. House voted to advance a reconciliation package that defunds Planned Parenthood. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet, nearly half of Minnesota abortions were recently <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/taxpayer-dollars-shouldnt-fund-late-term-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a> by the state.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, PPNCS &#8220;agreed to pay $20,000 to a fired employee to settle a labor dispute with union leaders stretching back\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/minnesotareformer.com\/2023\/03\/31\/planned-parenthood-affiliate-fires-two-union-leaders-disciplines-entire-bargaining-team\/\">nearly two years<\/a>,&#8221; reported the <a href=\"https:\/\/minnesotareformer.com\/2025\/01\/17\/planned-parenthood-affiliate-pays-fired-employee-20000-and-other-labor-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota Reformer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Ruth Richardson, the affiliate&#8217;s president and CEO, told NBC News, &#8220;We have been fighting to hold together an unsustainable infrastructure as the landscape shifts around us and an onslaught of attacks continues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, PPNCS also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/planned-parenthood-affiliate-close-clinics-iowa-minnesota-rcna208890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> NBC it planned to <em>keep investing in telemedicine services<\/em> and sees 20,000 patients a year virtually.<\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line:<\/h2>\n<p>The fact is that &#8220;patient needs and preferences have changed,&#8221; as Planned Parenthood admitted \u2014 and all of the claims about closures and layoffs is really a political and financial ploy.<\/p>\n<p>Even the increase of competition with FQHCs and online virtual abortion websites could be impacting Planned Parenthood&#8217;s bottom line.
