Like her previous show &#8220;Girls,&#8221; which aired on HBO, it <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/too-much-episode-5-pink-valentine-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">features abortion<\/a>. In the fifth episode, lead character Jessica reflects on the eight-year relationship she had with her ex-boyfriend, Zev, during which the couple dreamed of having children together. But towards the end of the relationship, Jessica cheated on Zev and got pregnant. She didn&#8217;t know which man was the father.<\/p>\n<p>During an argument, Jessica told Zev she was pregnant, only for him to be flippant about it:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Jessica: &#8220;Do you still love me? At all?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Zev: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Jessica: &#8220;OK, well, I&#8217;m pregnant, so I guess I&#8217;ll go get an abortion or something, if you don&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Zev: &#8220;Yeah, that&#8217;s probably the right idea.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jessica undergoes an abortion, and then, devastated, moves back in with her mother, sister, and grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>The abortion itself is shown on-screen, though it is heavily sanitized. Jessica is shown undergoing anesthesia, and an ultrasound screen can be spotted next to her. Tellingly, there is nothing shown on the screen to indicate that there is a living human baby inside of her \u2014 no movement, no heartbeat, nothing.<\/p>\n<p>When Jessica wakes up from the anesthesia, she is heartbroken, but it is largely insinuated to be over her break-up with Zev, and not due to the abortion itself.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HcrbR6EXynM?si=UZxPggBIgcIgHRuh\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The flippant treatment of abortion was also seen in Dunham&#8217;s show &#8220;Girls.&#8221; In a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reaction-decade-old-pro-abortion-clip-change\/\">now-viral scene<\/a>, a character (played by Gillian Jacobs) casually tells her new boyfriend (played by Adam Driver) she has just had an abortion, so they can&#8217;t have sex. She has a nonchalant, almost numb attitude, while her boyfriend reacts with disbelief and anger, asking her, &#8220;Was it mine?&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"zxx\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/avA2taBNMN\">pic.twitter.com\/avA2taBNMN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Live Action News (@LiveActionNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LiveActionNews\/status\/1940094390841774096?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 1, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Commentary:<\/h2>\n<p>The abortion stories Dunham included in &#8220;Girls&#8221; and &#8220;Too Much&#8221; weren&#8217;t created solely out of Dunham&#8217;s own imagination; she worked <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/planned-parenthoods-lena-dunham-abortion-1236464313\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directly with Planned Parenthood<\/a> to craft them.<\/p>\n<p>Caren Spruch is the national director of arts and entertainment for the abortion chain, and reached out to Dunham 15 years ago after seeing one of her films.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the best move I ever made,\u201d Spruch said about reaching out to Dunham. \u201cSo I decided to write a letter. I packed up a box of shirts and swag from whatever our campaign was at the time, and I sent the box to the set. She called me the day she got it, and that was the beginning of a long relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spruch advised Dunham on multiple issues, including how to portray &#8216;safe sex&#8217; in &#8220;Girls,&#8221; as well as the abortion discussion that took place between two of the characters \u2014 and Spruch made sure it was framed positively. \u201cSo truly not stigmatizing her decision. She had an abortion and she was living her best life,\u201d Spruch said. \u201cI was talking to Lena all the time. We did so many projects together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, now, with &#8220;Too Much,&#8221; Spruch made sure it was the tidy, woman-focused, baby-ignoring Planned Parenthood portrayal of abortion that appeared on-screen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we talked about how the abortion provider was portrayed, because we need nuanced portrayals of what it means to provide these services,\u201d she said. The abortionist in &#8220;Too Much&#8221; was intentionally shown as kind, caring, and compassionate (though many <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-planned-parenthood-trained-abortion-injuries\/\">women<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/court-records-planned-parenthood-abortionist-horribly-mistreated-patients\/\">expressed<\/a> their <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-abortionist-sexually-abused-patients-decades\/\">experiences<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/former-abortionist-abortion-big-business\/\">the opposite<\/a>) as a rebuttal against how Spruch said abortion is typically shown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was bemoaning the abhorrent depictions of abortion, where somebody has an unintended pregnancy and they fall down the stairs. They have a miscarriage. They die. They\u2019re evil and shamed and judged.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Backstory:<\/h2>\n<p>Dunham has been open about her pro-abortion advocacy for years. She dressed up as a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lena-dunham-dressing-planned-parenthood-abortionist-halloween\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planned Parenthood abortionist<\/a> for Halloween, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lena-dunham-releases-video-arguing-that-abortion-is-the-most-basic-of-all-human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called abortion<\/a> &#8220;the most basic of all human rights,&#8221; and released a fawning pro-Planned Parenthood video that skimped out on the chain&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lena-durham-pro-planned-parenthood-video-has-major-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sordid history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of her most controversial takes on abortion was when Dunham announced that she has never had an abortion&#8230; but <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lena-dunham-i-still-havent-had-an-abortion-but-i-wish-i-had\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>wishes she had<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On her podcast, &#8220;Women of the Hour,&#8221; Dunham said she was raised to be pro-abortion, but while discussing the so-called &#8220;stigma&#8221; around abortion, was disturbed during an encounter she had at a Planned Parenthood facility:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>I always thought that I myself didn\u2019t stigmatize abortion. I\u2019m a \u2013 uh abortion rights activist, it\u2019s a huge part of who I am. But one day, when I was visiting a Planned Parenthood in Texas a few years ago, a young girl walked up to me and asked me if I\u2019d like to be a part of her project in which women share their stories of abortions. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>I sort of jumped. \u2018I haven\u2019t had an abortion,\u2019 I told her. I wanted to make it really clear to her that as much as I was going out and fighting for other women\u2019s options, I myself had never had an abortion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue. Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman\u2019s right to choose, felt it was important that people know I was unblemished in this department.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This made Dunham realize she had internalized &#8220;stigma&#8221; towards abortion, concluding (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>So many people I love \u2013 my mother, my best friends \u2013 have had to have abortions for all kinds of reasons.
