{"id":33362,"date":"2013-04-17T03:31:05","date_gmt":"2013-04-17T07:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=33362"},"modified":"2013-04-17T09:48:17","modified_gmt":"2013-04-17T13:48:17","slug":"boytoxing-pop-culture-trends-show-that-casual-sex-hurts-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/boytoxing-pop-culture-trends-show-that-casual-sex-hurts-women\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Boytoxing&#8221;: Pop culture trends show that casual sex hurts women"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Back in 2007, when I was a 21-year-old junior at Ohio University, I picked up a copy of <i>Unprotected: <\/i><i>A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness in Her Profession Endangers Every Student<\/i>, written by a doctor calling herself \u201cAnonymous, MD.\u201d Columnist Mona Charen described the book as \u201ca hard slap at the sexual free-for-all that prevails on American campuses and throughout American life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a college student, it struck a personal chord with me. I found it fascinating\u2014and heartbreakingly accurate. I e-mailed the author, who turned out to be Miriam Grossman, campus psychiatrist at UCLA. A year later, I became her researcher for her second book.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, she e-mailed me: \u201cLook at my Facebook page. Have you seen this new term, \u2018boytox\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Dr. Grossman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MiriamGrossmanMd\">wrote on Facebook<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Fascinating: a new word has appeared acknowledging the toxic effects of casual sex for girls.<\/p>\n<p>From UrbanDictionary.com:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Boytox&#8221;: When a woman gives up dating\/cavorting with the opposite sex for a temporary period in an attempt to enhance her overall well-being, including her mental health and her physical appearance. As a result, she may glow or look younger from lack of frowning and crying as if she had a Botox injection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ever since she went on that boytox, she&#8217;s seemed so happy. Positively glowing!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That boytox did wonders for her mental health.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The author doesn\u2019t define \u201ccavorting,\u201d but I think we can read between the lines. She means sex. And she knows something that Planned Parenthood, the American Psychological Association, and campus health centers don\u2019t: casual sex can be hazardous to a woman\u2019s mental health and self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Grossman has seen the damage firsthand. At UCLA, she treated hundreds of patients &#8211; mostly women &#8211; who came in requesting Zoloft or Xanax to cope with the fallout from broken relationships, STIs, and, yes, abortions. Some had trouble even acknowledging the source of their pain.<\/p>\n<p>Take \u201cHeather,\u201d a freshman who had a \u201cfriend with benefits.\u201d She told Dr. Grossman, \u201cI want to spend more time with him. But he says no, because if we do, then in his opinion we\u2019d have a <i>relationship. <\/i>And I\u2019m confused, because it seems like I don\u2019t get the \u2018friend\u2019 part, but he still gets the \u2018benefits.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It took psychotherapy for Heather to realize that this relationship was degrading. She felt used, and her needs were being neglected. She didn\u2019t need antidepressants &#8211; she needed a boytox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually we get warnings about the risks to our health and well-being from the medical profession,\u201d Dr. Grossman says. \u201cThe dangers of trans fats, tanning salons, red meat, cell phones\u2026the list is endless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In these cases, we\u2019re not afraid to get judgmental and even a little hyperbolic with health warnings. <i>Cosmopolitan <\/i>pushes its \u201csafe sun\u201d campaign relentlessly, featuring horror stories of twenty-something melanoma victims. Doctors don\u2019t think twice about hounding smokers to quit.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to casual sex, it\u2019s reversed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dangers of casual sex for women have been noticed by the culture, in an organic way,\u201d Dr. Grossman says. \u201cNot through double blind studies that cost millions and take years to do, but through everyday experience and common sense. The culture knows it intuitively.\u201d (\u201cBoytoxing\u201d is far from the only example. Being a &#8217;90s kid, the song \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-nrGWwHalCU\">Insensitive<\/a>\u201d and its lovelorn lyrics popped into my head.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf my profession weren&#8217;t so PC, the term would be included in the newest version of the DSM, out soon, with all sorts of new diagnoses,\u201d Dr. Grossman says.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, there is tacit approval of promiscuity and experimentation of all kinds with male and female \u201cpartners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCentral is the dogma that regular sexual behavior &#8211; with or without a committed relationship &#8211; is necessary and healthy, and can be free of consequences, as long as it\u2019s \u2018protected,\u2019\u201d Dr. Grossman says. \u201cBut believing doesn\u2019t make it so. On my campus, sexually active students were much more likely to seek counseling.
