{"id":333135,"date":"2025-06-21T13:11:41","date_gmt":"2025-06-21T18:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=333135"},"modified":"2025-06-19T23:42:59","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T04:42:59","slug":"younger-adults-fewer-children-decade-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/younger-adults-fewer-children-decade-ago\/","title":{"rendered":"Analysis: Younger adults plan to have even fewer children than a decade ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>As global birth rates continue to struggle to meet replacement rate, a new Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/18\/us-adults-in-their-20s-and-30s-plan-to-have-fewer-children-than-in-the-past\/\">analysis<\/a> reveals that U.S. adults in their 20s and 30s plan to have even fewer children than adults a decade ago.<\/p>\n<h2>Key Takeaways:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Adults in their 20s and 30s had a much higher intended birth rate a decade ago than they do today.<\/li>\n<li>Among several age groups, a steeper decline is seen among those attaining four-year degrees.<\/li>\n<li>Just three-quarters of men and women plan to have at least <em>one<\/em> child \u2014 down from 90% in 2012.<\/li>\n<li>The only group of women still achieving replacement rate in 2023 was among those ages 35-39.<\/li>\n<li>Pew asked people what they felt would encourage families to have more children; the top responses mentioned financial benefits in some way (tax credits, free child care, paid family leave, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Details:<\/h2>\n<p>The analysis, published by Pew on June 18, states, &#8220;The total number of children that <em>women and men<\/em> ages 20 to 39 planned to have, on average, dropped from 2.3 in 2012 to 1.8 in 2023. Those numbers remained stable from 2002 to 2012.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Replacement rate (the number of children needed on average per woman to replace the population) is considered to be 2.1. Anything below this number indicates a dangerous downward trend \u2014 and Pew says these declines have happened almost entirely in just the past decade. The analysis noted that from 2012 to 2023, the &#8220;total number of children that women planned to have&#8221; dropped significantly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>2.3 to 1.5 for women ages 20 to 24<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>2.3 to 1.9 for women ages 25 to 29<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>2.5 to 1.9 for women ages 30 to 34<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Similar declines were seen among men in these age groups. It stated, &#8220;In 2023, the total number of children that women ages 25 to 39 planned to have was [] 1.7 among those <em>with<\/em> a college degree [and] 2.2 among those <em>without<\/em> a college degree.&#8221; This age group was selected for analysis because this age group has &#8220;mostly completed their education,&#8221; according to Pew.<\/p>\n<p>But among men with varying education degrees, the intended birth rates were practically the same.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_333139\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-333139\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-333139\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/declines-number-children-education-levels-Pew-668x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/declines-number-children-education-levels-Pew-668x700.jpg 668w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/declines-number-children-education-levels-Pew-286x300.jpg 286w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/declines-number-children-education-levels-Pew-768x805.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/declines-number-children-education-levels-Pew-500x524.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/declines-number-children-education-levels-Pew.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-333139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/18\/us-adults-in-their-20s-and-30s-plan-to-have-fewer-children-than-in-the-past\/sr_25-06-18_having-fewer-children_3\/\">Declines in the number of children that adults plan to have were similar across education levels<\/a>,&#8221; Pew Research Center<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The analysis also noted that, &#8220;In 2023, about three-quarters of men (76%) and women (77%) had or planned to have at least one child. This was down from about nine-in-ten [90%] in 2012.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The biggest drop was seen among women between 20 and 24. The results showed the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>47% &#8211; negative impact<\/li>\n<li>20% &#8211; positive impact<\/li>\n<li>31% &#8211; neither positive nor negative impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Commentary:<\/h2>\n<p>Are women who attain college degrees more focused overall on desiring and achieving career success than on building families? Pew&#8217;s analysis shows that, perhaps until their mid-thirties, this may be the case. However, there may be more at play than a simple desire for career success.<\/p>\n<p>When Pew asked people what they felt may <em>encourage<\/em> more people to have children, the top ideas they listed seemed to focus on <em>finances<\/em> in some way. Here&#8217;s what they felt would likely encourage family growth:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>60% &#8211; <strong>free<\/strong> child care<\/li>\n<li>51% &#8211; <strong>paid<\/strong> family leave<\/li>\n<li>49% &#8211; more <strong>tax credits<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>45% &#8211; <strong>monthly payment<\/strong> for parents of minors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, notice the financial theme &#8211; cost savings, time with family without losing income, relief on their tax burden while raising children, and even receiving money just to help with expenses when raising children.<\/p>\n<p>If we were to examine <em>only these items above<\/em>, we might conclude that women (and men) in their 20s and 30s are most concerned with establishing themselves financially before they even consider having children.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps women aged 35-39 feel more financially secure \u2014 or at least secure enough to have seen almost zero change in birth rate over the past decade when that of women from all other age groups dropped.<\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line:<\/h2>\n<p>In today&#8217;s world of rising costs, women and men may be finding the idea of having children even more difficult \u2014 or unrealistic. Sometimes this leads people to choose abortion for financial reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, if we can help to ease the financial burdens of people in their childbearing years, it is likely to benefit <em>all<\/em> of society, not just a few.
