He also recounted speaking with Hochul about strengthening anti-suicide efforts in the state. Dolan said he believes Hochul may be wrestling with the idea of signing the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuicide is an effect when somebody\u2019s struggling emotionally as well as physically,\u201d Dolan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/cna\/cardinal-dolan-new-york-assisted-suicide-bill-cheapens-human-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalled<\/a> telling her. \u201cThat\u2019s when people are so desperate and we have to help their mental health so that they don\u2019t go for suicide \u2014 that\u2019s why we don\u2019t want the physician-assisted suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t commit herself, but something tells me her gut\u2019s not into this,\u201d he continued. \u201cI\u2019m hoping she\u2019ll take the courageous, right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On May 29, Cardinal Dolan <a href=\"https:\/\/catholicreview.org\/dolan-n-y-lawmakers-may-conclude-that-some-lives-arent-worth-living\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote a piece<\/a> for The Wall Street Journal in which he highlighted the disparity between the efforts of lawmakers to reduce suicides, while at the same time legalizing physician-assisted suicide:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8230; I am more than puzzled, I am stunned, when I read that New York lawmakers are on the verge of legalizing suicide \u2014 not by leaping from a bridge but via a poison cocktail easily provided by physicians and pharmacists. I can\u2019t help but shake my head in disbelief at the disparity in official responses. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Our government will marshal all its resources to save the life of one hopeless and despondent man. Yet it may conclude that some lives aren\u2019t worth living \u2014 perhaps due to a serious illness or disability \u2014 and we will hand those despondent women and men a proverbial loaded gun and tell them to have at it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dolan&#8217;s voice joins a number of other leading Catholics in the state who are urging Hochul to veto the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis Poust, the executive director of the\u00a0New York State Catholic Conference, warns that the bill&#8217;s lack of patient safeguards makes it the worst assisted suicide legislation in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could get a terminal diagnosis from your doctor. You\u2019ll be grief-stricken, you\u2019ll be in despair, and you could at that moment request assisted suicide drugs from that doctor and then from a subsequent doctor next door,\u201d Poust told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OIPB7Rcfvu4?si=85KM906my25vkejt&amp;t=2194\" target=\"null\" rel=\"noopener\">EWTN News Nightly<\/a>\u00a0on June 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next day, you could be ending your life,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s egregious.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Back Story:<\/h2>\n<p>New York lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-york-senate-legalize-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed S138<\/a>, which would legalize assisted suicide, on June 9.<\/p>\n<p>In order to qualify for assisted suicide under the bill, a person would have to have a terminal diagnosis of six months or less to live.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul, a Catholic Democrat, has said she will review the legislation but has not indicated if she will sign it.<\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line:<\/h2>\n<p>If passed, New York would join 11 other states plus D.C. in legalizing &#8216;assisted death.&#8217; However, there is fear that if the state legalizes it, this will <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/spread-legalized-assisted-suicide-danger-vulnerable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provide the impetus<\/a> for many other states to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/actnow.io\/G3Bhv6M\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-332271\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-700x251.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-700x251.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-300x107.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-768x275.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-500x179.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02.jpg 1167w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A number of leading Catholic voices in New York have spoken out against assisted suicide and euthanasia following the state legislature&#8217;s passage of a bill that would legalize &#8216;assisted dying&#8217; (or medicalized killing) in the state.
