On Friday, May 30, Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2025a_144_signed.pdf\">signed into law a bill expanding parental leave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a ballot initiative in 2020, voters passed the <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Colorado_Proposition_118,_Paid_Medical_and_Family_Leave_Initiative_(2020)\">Paid Medical and Family Leave Initiative<\/a> with a 57.72% yes vote. This ballot initiative, which became law, allowed for up to 12 weeks of paid time off work under certain circumstances, including, but not limited to, \u201ccaring for a new child during the first year after the birth or adoption or for foster care of a new child.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/famli.colorado.gov\/resources\/famli-by-the-numbers\">Nearly 86,000 claims<\/a> to date have been filed for parental leave alone since the initiative was enacted.<\/p>\n<p>Now, five years later, Colorado is expanding upon that law. <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2025a_144_signed.pdf\">Senate Bill 25-144<\/a> states that starting Jan 1, 2026, paid time off can be extended for \u201can additional twelve weeks to a covered individual who has a child receiving inpatient care in a neonatal intensive care unit for the duration that the child is receiving care in the neonatal intensive care unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the law expands paid leave for an additional four weeks for a woman who is experiencing \u201ca serious health condition related to pregnancy complications or childbirth complications.\u201d<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>One of the bill sponsors, Rep. Yara Zokaie (D), once had to work from the hospital when her child was in NICU.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/06\/04\/colorado-paid-leave-nicu-parents\">In support of the bill she stated<\/a>, \u201cHaving a child in the NICU is one of the most terrifying moments as a parent, and the last thing they should be worried about is having to choose between spending time with their child in the hospital and keeping their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is absolutely correct. In addition to this bill being good for parents, it\u2019s good for the children, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5856604\/#:~:text=More%20parent%20holding%20in%20the,)%20at%204%E2%80%935%20years.\">NICU babies have better developmental outcomes<\/a> even at ages 4 and 5 years if parents are allowed more time to hold them and have skin to skin contact.<\/p>\n<p>Colorado has made amazing strides in providing for families in a relatively short time!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The cognitive dissonance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Colorado citizens and lawmakers seem to care deeply that families are cared for, especially during hard times.<\/p>\n<p>But these paid family leave bills are in stark contrast to Colorado laws concerning Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) and abortion.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/colorado-mom-grateful-for-her-baby-as-state-attempts-to-quash-apr\">Colorado<\/a> became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/colorado-democrats-move-to-outlaw-abortion-pill-reversal-target-pregnancy-help\">the first state to ban APR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/significant-flaws-in-colorado-s-law-banning-abortion-pill-reversal\">placed sanctions<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/legal-battle-in-colorado-over-the-right-to-choose-life\">pregnancy help centers<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/colorado-medical-board-changes-course-says-doctors-providing-abortion-pill-reversal-may-be-disciplined\">or anyone else<\/a> who advertised or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/is-colorado-medical-board-following-science-or-money-on-abortion-pill-reversal\">prescribed progesterone<\/a> after a woman had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/another-baby-saved-by-abortion-pill-reversal-this-time-in-colorado\">taken mifepristone<\/a>. However, in October 2023, a federal judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/colorado-judge-exempts-pro-life-clinic-from-state-s-ban-on-abortion-pill-reversal-therapy\">gave a preliminary injunction<\/a> against the bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/colorado-pauses-apr-ban\">allowing<\/a> Bella Health and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/my-state-is-punishing-a-nurse-because-she-saved-my-babys-life\">other similar providers<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/colorado-abortion-pill-law-put-on-hold\">continue providing APR<\/a>. The case, <em>Bella Health and Wellness v. Weiser<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/adflegal.org\/case\/bella-health-and-wellness-v-weiser\/\">is ongoing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Gbo2q8faq4?si=v5vBlQoIeX0JTyB2\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Colorado is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/questions-remain-following-teen-mothers-post-abortion-death\">abortion<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/shield-laws-enable-chemical-abortions-in-pro-life-states\">safe haven<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/hb22-1279#:~:text=Concerning%20the%20codification%20of%20a,decisions%20free%20from%20government%20interference.&amp;text=The%20act%20declares%20that%20every,the%20laws%20of%20the%20state.&amp;text=Depriving%2C%20through%20prosecution%2C%20punishment%2C,to%20this%20bill%20as%20enacted.)\">A bill<\/a> signed into law in 2022 and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/the-states-of-affairs\">constitutional amendment<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pregnancyhelpnews.com\/more-committed-than-ever-to-supporting-and-empowering-women-leading-pregnancy-help-network-responds-to-trump-win-state-abortion-amendments\">passed in 2024<\/a> have ensured that abortion is a <em>right<\/em> in Colorado. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/cwhccolorado.com\/for-patients\/abortion-faq-facts\/index.html#:~:text=Is%20abortion%20legal%20in%20Colorado,fully%20legal%20in%20our%20State.%E2%80%9D\">no gestational limits<\/a> to abortion in Colorado, no waiting periods, and no parental consent needed for minors to access abortion.<\/p>\n<p>A baby at 23 weeks could be born and treated in the NICU at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/viewer?mid=1hbK8cpS_EIS_q-q4H29gGK_f1ay2g6oJ&amp;ll=30.627856360286312%2C-95.7880800552764&amp;z=3\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a> or could be aborted elsewhere in the state.<\/p>\n<p>How does a state come to have such wildly different laws regarding pregnancy and post-pregnancy help for families?<\/p>\n<p>Women and men who <em>want<\/em> their baby can get extra paid time to bond and care for them, but women who regret taking the first abortion pill and <em>want<\/em> to keep their baby have a much harder time getting help. Women who <em>want<\/em> their baby can get excellent NICU care at a hospital, but women who don\u2019t want their baby (or more realistically, do not wish to be pregnant) can pay for a late-term abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not someone is \u201cwanted\u201d should have no bearing on their fundamental human rights, like the right to life.<\/p>\n<p>We can and should applaud Colorado for taking steps to help families.
