Throughout his response, Wright and his co-host Mike Bird offered several disjointed excuses for why they believe abortion can occasionally be justified, claiming, \u201cWe can\u2019t assume this is a black-and-white answer when every case is going to be somehow different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the vast majority of Wright\u2019s explanation was inconsistent with a basic pro-life ethic and biblical worldview, several errors stood out to biblical scholars and commentators as the most egregious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2CYZ2FdYcYg?si=0qvPbzZZGKA0pjRa\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><b>Abortion in difficult circumstances<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Wright suggested abortion may be justified in difficult circumstances, such as rape, incest, or a prenatal diagnosis of a disability. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright stated that mothers can proceed in these instances \u201cwith sorrow, because we do not want to do this in principle, but with sorrow and a bit of shame, the best thing to do is as soon as possible to terminate this pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ken Ham<\/strong>, CEO of Answers in Genesis, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/answersingenesis.org\/sanctity-of-life\/abortion\/abortion\/theologian-wrights-atrocious-take-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">countered<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright\u2019s claim with simple pro-life logic: it is always unethical to kill a child (that&#8217;s what the euphemistic &#8220;terminate this pregnancy&#8221; phrase chosen by Wright actually means), regardless of manner of conception or disability. Ham argued:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why is killing a baby for a fetal anomaly \u2018the best thing to do\u2019 in the womb, but outside of the womb, it\u2019s the evil of infanticide? The only thing that changed was the baby\u2019s location or, perhaps, level of development. But is that what makes us a person with value? No! Our status as an image bearer of God is what gives us value.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ham concluded that Wright\u2019s acceptance of abortion in difficult circumstances allows mankind to play God, determining which infants are unworthy of being born based on arbitrary criteria such as the presence of a disability or the circumstances of conception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t get to be the arbiters of who lives and who dies,\u201d Ham noted. \u201cGod has fearfully and wonderfully made each and every human life, in his image, and he alone holds the power of life and death.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P3j0raroDqM?si=EhcWBRzyjNVHkYV9\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Live Action founder and president <strong>Lila Rose<\/strong> responded to Wright\u2019s defense of abortion in cases of rape, affirming that children conceived through rape are not responsible for the crime and should not bear the punishment for it. Rose wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LilaGraceRose\/status\/1929729770406969628\">post on X<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N.T. Let the baby live. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KZsQStrNyf\">https:\/\/t.co\/KZsQStrNyf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lila Rose (@LilaGraceRose) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LilaGraceRose\/status\/1929729770406969628?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><b>Confusion about when life begins<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wright claimed that in cases of \u201csevere deformity\u201d (as well as rape and incest), committing an abortion \u201cthe sooner the better\u201d is best, because he is not \u201cmedically qualified\u201d to say when \u201cthis is a viable human being that should then be cherished.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite claiming he is unqualified to state when a preborn human should be valued, Wright confidently <em>condemned<\/em> laws that permit abortions \u201cthe moment before the woman is ready to give birth,\u201d calling these cases \u201cnot only wrong but repulsive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a response for the Christian publication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firstthings.com\/the-problem-with-n-t-wrights-abortion-remarks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Things<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>Sebastian Milbank<\/strong>, executive editor of &#8220;The Critic,&#8221; pushed back on Wright\u2019s excuse that he is not medically qualified to determine when life begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is, to be blunt, just not good enough from any public intellectual, let alone a Christian theologian. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would be very surprised indeed if he thought that the ethics of bombing civilians was a matter for explosives experts or if the evils of child abuse are a question for social workers.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Colson Center authors John Stonestreet and Shane Morris <a href=\"https:\/\/colsoncenter.org\/breakpoint\/n.t.-wright-shows-why-we-still-need-the-case-for-life\">responded<\/a> with incredulity, writing, &#8220;&#8230; <span data-contrast=\"none\">if Wright doesn\u2019t have the credentials or chromosomes to say when a child <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">should<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> be cherished, how does he know it has anything to do with viability?&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Too \u201csensitive\u201d for men to discuss?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wright\u2019s ultimate conclusion is that he cannot offer his listener a definitive answer \u2014 because abortion is too \u201csensitive\u201d a topic for him to speak on as a <em>male<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs people now say, the optics of that are pretty bad,\u201d Wright stated of hypothetical male church leaders recommending against abortion to a young woman in their congregation. \u201cThat\u2019s part of the same system of male bullying, which we have to avoid like the plague,\u201d he added, seemingly equating any male with a strong pro-life stance to an oppressor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery one of Wright\u2019s arguments are familiar and his inconsistency obvious,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/breakpoint.org\/n-t-wright-shows-why-we-still-need-the-case-for-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stonestreet and Morris. \u201cIn fact, that\u2019s the point of these re-hashed arguments for abortion. The scattershot approach confuses the issue rather than illuminates it, and they all start with the premise that the preborn aren\u2019t valuable human beings. That Wright has absorbed them and is repeating them shows he is either unaware or intentionally ignoring the actual case for life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Commentary:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Christians who adhere to a biblical worldview, there should be no question of when life begins, since scripture consistently affirms that God establishes life in the womb. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 139:13\u201316 details how God forms our inward parts in our mothers\u2019 wombs; Jeremiah 1:4\u20135 takes it a step further, saying that God knows us before we are even formed in the womb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A biblical scholar like N.T.
