A battle with glaucoma left her almost blind, and a degenerative spinal condition caused her to lose feeling in her hands and feet. Eventually, she suffered paralysis and couldn&#8217;t eat on her own.<\/p>\n<p>Ron, meanwhile, had &#8220;myriad health problems&#8221; and debilitating panic attacks; he didn&#8217;t want to live without Irene. So they chose to be killed together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They wore special shirts picked out for the occasion; his a cranky cockatoo print, and hers the same white and floral print blouse she wore to their 70th wedding anniversary a few months previously,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The only sign of what was to come were the twin cannulas, one in each of their intertwined hands, with long thin tubes winding back behind the beds and out of sight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Friends and family visited, drinking champagne with the couple before they were killed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was like a farewell tour, as they laughed and cried, treating nearly every visitor to their own rendition of Willie Nelson\u2019s On the Road Again, which they\u2019d sing together with a smile, anticipating their final adventure together,&#8221; Rawson said, adding, &#8220;[T]hey were unwavering and emphatic in their decision. They had a wonderful life, they had done everything they had ever wanted, and it was time to go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rather than undergo assisted suicide, the couple was euthanized; their doctors <em>actively killed them<\/em> instead of simply supplying them a prescription for the lethal drugs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AITaKXSw-0Y?si=R_f0ct2PABmnDAjP\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>WHY IT MATTERS:<\/h3>\n<p>As assisted suicide and euthanasia grow in popularity across the globe, stories like this which romanticize the act have likewise become more frequent.<\/p>\n<p>Some instances are considerably more grisly; even <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-suicide-capitalize-murder-woman-husband\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cases<\/a> where an ailing spouse is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/murder-suicide-love-story-culture-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">murdered<\/a> by the other spouse are often portrayed by the pro-death media as <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-romanticizes-murder-woman-dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">romantic<\/a>. Healthy couples are <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dutch-couple-chose-euthanized-together-ultimate-tragedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed together<\/a> simply because they are elderly and want to die together \u2014 including the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-romanticizes-euthanasia-former-netherlands-pm-wife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former prime minister<\/a> of the Netherlands and his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Disturbingly, though these deaths may appear peaceful, the reality is often very different.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Joel Zivot, an associate professor of anesthesiology and surgery at the Emory School of Medicine and an expert on \u201cphysician participation in lethal injection,\u201d assisted suicide can be exruciating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[F]or both euthanasia and executions, paralytic drugs are used,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/disturbing-revelations-assisted-suicide-drowning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in an op-ed<\/a> for the Spectator. \u201cThese drugs, given in high enough doses, mean that a patient cannot move a muscle, cannot express any outward or visible sign of pain. But that doesn\u2019t mean that he or she is free from suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cPeople who want to die deserve to know that they may end up drowning, not just falling asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>THE BOTTOM LINE:<\/h3>\n<p>Suicide is almost always a tragedy which should be prevented at all costs.
