Kathy Hochul&#8217;s decision to approve or veto <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-york-senate-legalize-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a> to legalize assisted suicide in the state, it&#8217;s becoming more evident that the United States is moving at a slow but increasing pace toward the promotion of death \u2014 which always begins with those most vulnerable.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>KEY TAKEAWAYS:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Assisted suicide legislation has crept slowly but steadily into 11 states and D.C., with at least 16 other states that have considered it.<\/li>\n<li>New York, the &#8220;epicenter of American culture,&#8221; has approved legislation legalizing assisted suicide. Here are three examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1. In areas where assisted suicide has been legal for some time, legislators have either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatrictimes.com\/view\/first-do-no-harm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanded<\/a> or are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelundreport.org\/content\/changes-oregons-death-dignity-act-may-advance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looking to expand<\/a> the laws <strong>to include non-terminal illnesses and even mental health<\/strong> as acceptable reasons for assisted suicide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">2. In some areas, like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-patients-assisted-suicide-medical-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oregon and California<\/a>, <strong>insurance companies have begun denying true health care and treatments<\/strong> for patients and approving assisted suicide drugs instead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">3. In Canada, which has government-run health care, <strong>even people who are not terminally ill<\/strong> are now being <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-paralympian-suicide-bill-cuts-disabilities-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushed<\/a> towards doctor-prescribed suicide \u2014 because it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/qsarchive-archiveqs.pbo-dpb.ca\/web\/default\/files\/Documents\/Reports\/RP-2021-025-M\/RP-2021-025-M_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheaper<\/a> than taking care of people.<\/p>\n<p>Assisted suicide was never about freedom and dignity, but about money and marketing. The message is that suicide is tragic for able-bodied, young people yet <em>dignified<\/em> for chronically ill, disabled, and older persons, as long as a doctor <em>prescribes<\/em> it \u2014 as if death were a form of health care for certain people.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>THE BACKSTORY:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first state to legalize assisted suicide was Oregon in 1994, with the Death with Dignity Act officially becoming law in 1997 following a lengthy legal battle. It took more than a decade for the next state to legalize it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2008: Washington<\/li>\n<li>2009: Montana (because of SCOTUS case <em>Baxter v. Montana)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>2013: Vermont<\/li>\n<li>2016: California, Colorado, and Washington, D.C.<\/li>\n<li>2018: Hawaii<\/li>\n<li>2019: New Jersey<\/li>\n<li>2020: Maine<\/li>\n<li>2021: New Mexico<\/li>\n<li>May 2025: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/delaware-governor-assisted-suicide-right-thing\/\">Delaware<\/a> (which attempted to pass it for a decade)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In <em>30 years,<\/em> just 11 states and D.C. have changed laws to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/02\/09\/medically-assisted-death-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allow<\/a> doctors to use their position of power and authority to prescribe lethal cocktails to help patients commit suicide.<\/p>\n<p>But given the number of states considering assisted suicide legislation, the number of laws allowing it could more than double in the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2025, New York&#8217;s legislature approved assisted suicide, and <a href=\"https:\/\/deathwithdignity.org\/states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>16 other states<\/em><\/a> \u2014 Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Tennessee \u2014 are considering or have considered legislation that would allow physicians to assist patients in killing themselves.<\/p>\n<p>If New York&#8217;s Gov. Hochul approves the legislation, will other states begin to fall in line?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible, if history is any indicator.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>THE BIG PICTURE:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When it came to the nationwide legalization of <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/abortion-america-visual-timeline\/story?id=85588254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion<\/a>, New York was at the front of the line.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967, Colorado allowed abortion for rape, incest, or a threat to the mother&#8217;s physical health. California, Oregon, and North Carolina followed suit with similar laws before Hawaii and New York became the first states to legalize abortion at the request of the mother in 1970 \u2014 although New York capped &#8220;elective&#8221; abortions at 24 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, similar expansive abortion laws were passed in Alaska and Washington.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 1972, 16 more states had legalized abortion for various reasons.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/nyweekly.com\/politics\/the-political-influence-of-new-york-a-closer-look\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Weekly<\/a>, New York City has been called the &#8220;epicenter of American culture&#8221; \u2014 it has influenced the political and cultural landscape of the nation. With a more conservative upstate population and a more liberal population in New York City and its surrounding areas, New Yorkers are diverse and ultimately representative of a divided country:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>As a melting pot of ideas and perspectives, the city serves as a crucible where political debates are waged, alliances forged, and policies shaped. While New York\u2019s political sway may face challenges and criticisms, its role in shaping the national discourse remains paramount. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>By understanding the dynamics of New York\u2019s political influence, we gain insight into the broader forces shaping the trajectory of American politics.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The nation saw the rise of abortion in 1973 \u2014 when the Supreme Court forced legalized abortion upon every state \u2014 and then witnessed the beginning of its end <em>49 years<\/em> later in 2022, when the Supreme Court overturned its 1973 ruling.
