We don\u2019t know what she will be able to feel or control.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

She may be blind.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

She probably won\u2019t hear very well.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

She probably won\u2019t be able to eat from her mouth.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes these babies’ lungs don\u2019t talk to their brains when they are born.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Claims like these are the last you ever wish to hear when you\u2019re pregnant. Yet my husband and I found ourselves facing specialist after specialist, being run through the potentials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We \u201cknow\u201d so much nowadays, and although great technological advancements have resulted in so much good \u2014 they have been a means of lifesaving treatment for our daughter \u2014 I think it\u2019s easy to forget we don’t hold <\/span>all <\/span><\/i>the knowledge, or power, in our hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Christmas season of 2023 was upon my husband, our two young boys, and me when we found out we were pregnant with our third baby. Though we\u2019d been trying for number three, the double pink lines still stunned us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This pregnancy, however, was different from the start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Something felt off”<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Extreme mental struggles surfaced in the first trimester\u2014turmoil so unlike the pregnancies with the boys. And joy erupted at the anatomy scan as we heard, \u201cIt\u2019s a girl!\u201d like music to our ears. But I was no rookie. Something felt off about the silence of the sonographer. I pushed the uneasy feeling aside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spring came, and the day after Easter, our midwife\u2019s voice crackled through the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey found some… concerning things on the anatomy scan.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That evening our lovely midwives faced us in our living room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSpina Bifida… where the spinal column is not completely closed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHydrocephalus… fluid built up in the brain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Words poured forth, and though our minds understood, our hearts couldn\u2019t quite keep up. We\u2019d already named her \u2014 Laurel Rose. It means \u201cVictory Rose\u201d and refers to Jesus rising from the grave. Indeed, one of the first things I believe I heard from God after the midwife\u2019s call that morning was, \u201cRemember her name.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Breaking the news to family and friends, we prayed, they prayed, and many more prayed for us. We\u2019d found ourselves in a canyon-carved desert, where we could barely see our next step. But the Good Shepherd doesn\u2019t abandon His sheep in the wild. He leads<\/span> them through it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At a specialist, the findings were confirmed. \u201cWe have a plan,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just like that, we made for a bigger city \u2014\u00a0the end goal to undergo fetal surgery. Laurel\u2019s back would be repaired while she was still in the womb. We met a team of professionals, receiving a crash course in these complex conditions. We were even starting to \u201cget used to\u201d the idea of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“How Your stories end”<\/strong><\/h3>\n

But on the morning after a required MRI for surgery approval, we sat across from a kind doctor as he said, \u201cI\u2019m afraid this is much worse.\u201d He spoke of the new diagnosis results from the MRI reading: \u201cSemilobar Holoprosencephaly.\u201d The doctor drew a diagram of a brain that had not fully split into two hemispheres. <\/span><\/p>\n

What had seemed a manageable storm to us erupted into a full-blown hurricane.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An hour later, we sat with yet another specialist. I remember thinking, by God\u2019s grace, \u201cWhere is this going? What are You planning? I know how Your stories end \u2014 and they don\u2019t end like this.\u201d Still, I\u2019d never felt so numb as we sat in the waiting room afterward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back home, God continued to sustain us \u2014 step by step, minute by minute. Sometimes that was all we could handle, but that was all we needed to. Time and again, I came across stories of wonderful outcomes from seemingly dark prognoses. Furthermore, personal research led me to highly doubt this new diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, despite it all, including continuing mental struggles, I asked my mom and sister to plan a baby shower. We would live with family closer to the hospitals for the rest of the pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scans were frequent now, and due to an enlarged head size, they decided Laurel had to come early. At 33 weeks \u2014 the same number of years Jesus walked this earth \u2014 Laurel Rose was delivered via C-section.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They rushed her to another room as protocol dictated. Because of how she was delivered, we hadn\u2019t heard her cry and knew nothing for minutes, but there was a peace upon my husband and me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then…\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou want to see her, dad?\u201d a doctor said cheerily. My husband jumped up and walked over just as the song \u201cSee a Victory\u201d \u2014 like her name \u2014 began to blast out loud on my shuffled playlist. <\/span><\/p>\n

She was wide-eyed as they rolled her by, and I was able to tell her I loved her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The day she was born, Laurel underwent both brain and back surgery. A successful NICU stay began.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As you may imagine, it was to our great shock when a second MRI in the NICU did not<\/em> retract the Holoprosencephaly diagnosis, but shifted it to the Alobar \u2014\u00a0or \u201cmost severe\u201d \u2014 form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what had these days been teaching us?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?\u201d (Matthew 6:27.)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD.\u201d (Proverbs 21:30.)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cGod is love.\u201d (1 John 4:16)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Focusing on today<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After a good deal of processing, I took simple but wise advice to heart: just focus on today. Only God holds the keys to tomorrow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Laurel was released from the NICU the day before her original due date. Now, after many \u201ctodays,\u201d she is nearly a year old.<\/span><\/p>\n

She has control and feeling of her entire body. She isn\u2019t blind. Her hearing is fine.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

She absolutely loves her bottles \u2014 and baby food even more.<\/span><\/p>\n

She is still working on many things, yes, but progressing wonderfully.<\/span><\/p>\n

For all the tears and fears and claims, we\u2019re learning that it’s only God Who has the final say.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You can\u2019t know any one person’s future by anything other than living it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
