The woman died as expected \u2014 but somehow, her partner also ingested the drugs and nearly died.<\/p>\n<p>Worryingly, it&#8217;s not even the first time this has happened in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/investigation-launched-australia-man-assisted-suicide-pills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>, a man took assisted suicide drugs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-09-25\/qld-voluntary-assisted-dying-report-fentiman\/102896616\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meant for his wife<\/a>, who had passed away in the hospital before getting the chance to kill herself. As no one was tracking the drugs, her husband was able to take them.<\/p>\n<p>Queensland coroner David O&#8217;Connor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/article\/2024\/sep\/11\/queensland-coroner-warns-of-further-calamity-and-heartbreak-if-voluntary-assisted-dying-laws-are-not-reformed#:~:text=Coroner%20David%20O%E2%80%99Connell%20said,nothing%20changes%2C%E2%80%9D%20he%20said.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> of these tragedies when assisted suicide was legalized in Queensland, saying it was \u201cnot a well-considered law.&#8221; After investigating the accidental death in 2023, he said the law is \u201cinadequate to provide for medication safety and to prevent deliberate misuse,&#8221; pointing out that it took just 107 days for issues to arise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther calamity and heartbreak await for parents and families if nothing changes,\u201d he said, specifically criticizing how easy it is for someone to be labeled a &#8220;contact person&#8221; who is responsible for reporting the death of the assisted suicide patient and disposing of the drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are simply no checks or inquiries of the contact person\u2019s suitability for the position,\u201d he said. \u201cAt the inquest it was conceded that a person is required to undertake greater identity checks to enter a nightclub in Brisbane than to become a contact person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/15XNBFf33W8?si=0yM9k7DQs0x2fYOC\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>THE BIG PICTURE:<\/h3>\n<p>Australia is not the only place that such horrors have occurred.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-suicide-drugs-accidentally-consumed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">case study<\/a> presented at the North American Clinical Congress on Toxicology&#8217;s annual conference revealed that a 37-year-old man drank from a euthanasia concoction meant for a friend who wanted to die, who had described it as \u201cbitter.\u201d The man who took a sip of the lethal drink became ill enough that he had to be transported to the emergency room by paramedics.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal of Emergency Medical Services highlighted a similar case, in which an elderly man drank his assisted suicide medication, and said that it burned. A middle-aged relative responded, &#8220;Let me see,&#8221; and took a drink; both ended up unconscious and barely breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Medical aid, however, was only given to the younger man, as the older man had intended to die.<\/p>\n<h3>GO DEEPER:<\/h3>\n<p>Data has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washington-assisted-suicide-data-troubling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously found<\/a> that assisted suicide drugs often go missing.<\/p>\n<p>In Washington, of 400 prescriptions given out in 2021, just 291 deaths resulted. But as the drugs are not tracked, it\u2019s not known what happened after being dispensed, including in cases where they were not used.
