It is allegedly meant to fulfill President Gabriel Boric&#8217;s campaign pledge to expand abortion before he leaves office next year.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Women and Gender Equity Antonia Orellana said the bill would be submitted to the Chamber of Deputies in the next few days, after a year&#8217;s worth of clandestine work behind the scenes. &#8220;Thirty-six years after therapeutic abortions were banned in our country&#8230; we are opening the debate in Congress,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Some celebrated the announcement; Deputy Helia Molina (PPD) <a href=\"https:\/\/havanatimes.org\/news\/chilean-government-reactivates-debate-on-legal-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s tremendous news for the country that we are starting work on a legal abortion law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, others pushed back. \u201cThe government is legislating outside the priorities of the people,\u201d Deputy Roberto Arroyo (PSC) said. \u201cChile rejects the culture of death and any government that promotes it.\u201d Arroyo was referring to a vote in 2022, in which citizens <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/voters-chile-reject-constitution-abortion-euthanasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejected<\/a> an amendment legalizing abortion.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>THE BACKSTORY:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/thesun.my\/world-news\/chile-government-proposes-to-legalize-abortion-up-to-14-weeks-HB14155741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> by the Centre for Public Studies shows that only 34% of Chileans back legalized abortion, and 50% believe abortion should only be legal in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, progressive Boric was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/chile-elects-pro-abortion-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elected<\/a> as president, even as an outspoken abortion supporter. Chile had legalized abortion through 12 weeks in 2017 in very limited circumstances: when the mother\u2019s life is at risk, if the child is deemed to be non-viable, or in cases of rape. Boric had campaigned for abortion to be further legalized, writing on his campaign website:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u201cWe will support the historical demand for legal, free, safe and free abortion, overcoming criminalization and putting the decision of the pregnant person at the center.
