It feels like it was meant to be, right from where I started,\u201d Parasram told<\/span> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/parents\/moms\/nicu-nurse-mom-surprise-rcna205491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TODAY Show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily is now ten years old and thriving, but Parasram recalls how difficult it was for her and her husband to leave Emily in the NICU after their daughter was born weighing just two pounds and two ounces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Life as a NICU parent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were anxious. We were nervous. We were scared. It\u2019s just the idea of leaving your baby behind [in the hospital], your most prized possession behind. It was very overwhelming,\u201d Parasram said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nurses helped both Emily and Parasram during Emily\u2019s two-month stay in the NICU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe nurses were amazing. She had been working as a medical assistant to a dermatologist before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DJaLikaS0Jy\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=7c1802e4-5072-454f-b905-35dfbd2b4fbb&amp;img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emily was born<\/a> and the career change was difficult but \u201cdefinitely worth it&#8221; because she can now provide care to other families that NICU nurses gave to her and her daughter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cI still remember how they made me feel. And it\u2019s a honor to be able to provide that to someone else,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Becoming a NICU nurse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a NICU nurse and former NICU mom, Parasram loves to ease the anxieties she knows NICU parents feel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love telling them stories, and letting them know that even though our babies are so tiny, they grow by the second,\u201d she said. \u201cI do love sharing my stories, because I do see that anxiety, and it does help.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working 12-hour shifts, including overnight, can be taxing for Parasram and the other NICU nurses, but their love and passion keep them going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt gets hard, but it\u2019s our love, it\u2019s our passion for what we do that keeps us in the game. That keeps us going,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasram can\u2019t imagine doing anything different with her life, she said in her interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the NICU, we see miracles every day. To work alongside a critical baby and to watch that baby grow and flourish and graduate and go home\u2013it\u2019s the best feeling ever. I can\u2019t see myself doing anything different,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasram was honored on the TODAY Plaza alongside her fellow NICU nurses, whom she considers \u2018family,\u201d on May 8 during National Nurses Week. Parasram was reunited with a baby girl she cared for and the baby\u2019s mother, who had the opportunity to thank Parasram publicly for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>THE BOTTOM LINE:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Babies born as young as <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/youngest-preemie-world-21-weeks-going-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21 weeks<\/a> have survived when given proper medical care. A premature baby&#8217;s chances of survival depend on a variety of factors, including a doctor&#8217;s willingness to provide them with care and whether the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/global-map-hospitals-saved-22-week-preemies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hospital in which they are born is equipped to care for them<\/a>.
