The legislation must pass two more votes before it can become law.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.scot\/bills-and-laws\/bills\/s6\/assisted-dying-for-terminally-ill-adults-scotland-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assisted Dying for Terminal Adults (Scotland) Bill<\/a> would allow adults who are considered terminally ill to request assisted suicide. They must first gain approval from two physicians, who can certify that they are considered mentally stable to make such a request. Unlike similar legislation elsewhere, the bill does not have a time limit for the terminal diagnosis; instead, it must only be considered &#8220;advanced and progressive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The bill <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/plans-legalise-assisted-dying-scotland-120000943.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAD7aZmqHZ83kYTTDtCH7naVOPjmjwGpF2AXSnH5BPczloXw0wfIoRADNFU7SykXavWs47LFOqHzbPYt_isa8Nxx2zYxjDBpRrREfx-icYxxLrcrkQDC-G0qdiz3jTpjDWeYS414QlhLauSgpRUaixgG-9wWzEn4sx9_Q-g2PZJCy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed<\/a> by a vote of 70 to 56.<\/p>\n<p>The bill&#8217;s sponsor, MSP Liam McArthur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp8yn2dd6peo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> he was &#8220;delighted&#8221; and &#8220;relieved&#8221; at the bill&#8217;s initial passage, as he <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/plans-legalise-assisted-dying-scotland-120000943.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAD7aZmqHZ83kYTTDtCH7naVOPjmjwGpF2AXSnH5BPczloXw0wfIoRADNFU7SykXavWs47LFOqHzbPYt_isa8Nxx2zYxjDBpRrREfx-icYxxLrcrkQDC-G0qdiz3jTpjDWeYS414QlhLauSgpRUaixgG-9wWzEn4sx9_Q-g2PZJCy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called it<\/a> a &#8220;landmark moment for Scotland.&#8221; As Live Action News previously reported, McArthur has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/scottish-mp-dying-paid-thousands-death-groups\/\">received significant monetary contributions<\/a> from pro-euthanasia groups.<\/p>\n<p>The bill has faced significant pushback from the disability community. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp8yn2dd6peo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC Scotland News<\/a>, Labour MSP Pam Duncan-Glancy, who uses a wheelchair, has been among its most outspoken critics. As Right to Life UK <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/head-scottish-government-vote-against-assisted-suicide\/\">reported<\/a>, Swinney told BBC Scotland News:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I\u2019ve come to the conclusion that I can\u2019t support [the legislation] because I\u2019m worried that it would fundamentally change the relationships between patients and clinicians. I\u2019m worried that some of the vulnerable in our society might feel that they are a burden and that they may therefore opt or feel under pressure to end their life prematurely&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I\u2019m concerned that we don\u2019t have a guarantee that the legislation could essentially extend in scope beyond the decision in principle. I feel it\u2019s wrongly principled to go down this route and that\u2019s why I\u2019ll vote against it on Tuesday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Miro Griffiths, from the organization Better Way, also campaigned against the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a disabled person and academic, I fear the consequences of an assisted suicide law,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Polling clearly shows that the public have serious concerns about the implications of a law change for vulnerable groups \u2014 even people who might support it in principle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added, &#8220;Legislating for this practice would send a regressive message that disabled people&#8217;s lives are not worth living.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other opponents of the legislation have also previously spoken out, warning that it <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/proposed-scotland-law-anorexic-teens-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could allow<\/a> for anorexic teenagers to qualify to legally kill themselves, and children <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/scotlands-lawmakers-16-yo-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as young as 16<\/a> could qualify for assisted suicide, though the minimum age in the legislation was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/head-scottish-government-vote-against-assisted-suicide\/\">recently increased<\/a> to 18 in an effort to gain votes toward passage.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/plans-legalise-assisted-dying-scotland-120000943.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAD7aZmqHZ83kYTTDtCH7naVOPjmjwGpF2AXSnH5BPczloXw0wfIoRADNFU7SykXavWs47LFOqHzbPYt_isa8Nxx2zYxjDBpRrREfx-icYxxLrcrkQDC-G0qdiz3jTpjDWeYS414QlhLauSgpRUaixgG-9wWzEn4sx9_Q-g2PZJCy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yahoo News<\/a>, the bill&#8217;s first vote was on its general principles.
