Garza was five months pregnant with her fourth child at the time. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/news4sanantonio.com\/news\/local\/man-accused-of-girlfriend-indicted-for-capital-murder-john-paul-ortega-stab-iliana-michelle-garza-tootn-totum-i-40-lakeside-drive?photo=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News 4 San Antonio<\/a>, Ortega was initially charged with murder, but those charges were upgraded after investigators learned that Garza was pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Iliana was a beautiful person, she was very humble and kind to everyone,&#8221; said her obituary. &#8220;She enjoyed spending time with her family and dedicated her career as a correctional officer. She also served as a paraprofessional for the Juvenile Charter School.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2F47thDA%2Fposts%2F996082856046852&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"625\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>According to the 47th District Attorney&#8217;s Office, Ortega and Garza were in a relationship at the time of her death, and he was the father of her preborn child. Homicide is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-women-die-homicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading causes of death<\/a> of pregnant women, exceeding <em>all<\/em> of the leading health-related causes of maternal mortality. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/company\/newsroom\/homicide-is-a-leading-cause-of-death-in-pregnant-women-in-the-us\/#:~:text=Women%20in%20the%20US%20are,experts%20in%20The%20BMJ%20today.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The BMJ<\/a>, women in the U.S. are more likely to be murdered during pregnancy or soon after childbirth than to die from the three leading obstetric causes of maternal death.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the crime, Ortega had been out of prison for just five months, after serving a 15-year sentence for sexual assault of a child, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault against a public servant, possession of a controlled substance, and cruelty to animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is especially heinous to take the life of an unborn child and his mother,&#8221; District Attorney Jason Herring said. &#8220;No verdict can heal the loss this family feels, but we hope this sentence brings them closure.
