Her baby boy died, and she is suing the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Michaelis was 24 weeks pregnant with her first baby, and her mother, Carla Michaelis, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/05\/04\/death-of-premature-baby-prompts-lawsuit-against-grossmont-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Diego Tribune<\/a> she had sought help from Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa three times in four days due to abdominal cramping and pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s her first pregnancy, so all I could think of was, well, maybe, if she\u2019s worried and doesn\u2019t feel right, because she\u2019s a pretty tough girl, then I\u2019m going to have her checked,\u201d Michaelis said.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ezn-9q2SYM?si=pI8t1J01CHWPBg3Z\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the first visit, doctors could not find any definitive cause for her cramping and pain, and sent her home. Michaelis was told to see her regular OB\/GYN, but by Sunday, the pain had gotten worse.<\/p>\n<p>Her discharge papers said to go to the emergency room if her condition worsened, which is what Michaelis and her mother did.<\/p>\n<p>There, emergency room personnel said she needed to be examined, but in the labor and delivery (L&amp;D) department, which was on the other side of the large hospital complex. They said it would be faster to drive there than to have her wheeled through in a gurney, so that is what the mother and daughter did.<\/p>\n<p>But once they got to L&amp;D, no one was willing to help them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was pleading with them,\u201d Carla Michaelis said. \u201cI said, \u2018I need your help. My daughter\u2019s in the car, and she\u2019s in extreme pain. I need someone to come out and help.\u2019 And the nurse said, \u2018well, how far along is she?\u2019 and I said, \u2018she\u2019s 24 weeks.\u2019 She said, \u2018we can\u2019t help you here, you need to go somewhere else.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Desperate, Carla ran back to the car and called 911. The San Diego Tribune was able to get a recording of the transcript:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\">Carla: <em>\u201cShe\u2019s six months pregnant, and she\u2019s having excruciating pain. They said they can\u2019t really see her here because, if she is in labor \u2026 they can\u2019t take care of it, so they told me to take her to UCSD. I can\u2019t drive her to UCSD, she\u2019s in excruciating pain. She\u2019s screaming.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\">Dispatcher: <em>\u201cOkay ma\u2019am \u2026 I just want to confirm you\u2019re at the hospital.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\">Carla: <em>\u201cCurrently, I am. I\u2019m outside the Sharp Grossmont Hospital for Women and Newborns.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\">Dispatch: <em>\u201cOkay, unfortunately, the fire department, if you\u2019re at the hospital, we don\u2019t respond to the hospital to take you to a different hospital.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Inside L&amp;D, however, a 911 call was also made \u2014 and it portrayed the Michaelis&#8217; as irrational and unreasonable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s, I don\u2019t know, she\u2019s yelling and screaming,\u201d the hospital employee told the dispatcher. \u201cI have a nurse going out to her car right now. She was told to go to UCSD yesterday if she had any further complications, and she just kind of stormed out that she was going to call 911, and I was like, no, they\u2019re not going to take you to another hospital anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carla went inside to get a wheelchair, and when she came back, Michaelis had begun giving birth inside the car. \u201cHer water had broken and there was blood all over the seat, you know, like amniotic fluid,\u201d Carla said. \u201cShe goes, \u2018but something else is wrong, I put my hand in my pants and I could feel his arms and legs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even then, L&amp;D staff did not seem to care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe rolled her eyes (and said) \u2018there\u2019s no baby yet, it\u2019s just her water broke.&#8217; She didn\u2019t check her, she just moved her from the front seat of the car into the wheelchair with the baby in her inner shorts and wheeled her back into the hospital and took her into a room,&#8221; Carla recalled. \u201cI followed behind, and when I got there, they had pulled the baby out of her pants and they were holding him up and he was moving and breathing and making little baby noises.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tragically, the baby boy \u2014 named Samuel \u2014 did not make it. When staff finally took Michaelis inside, they placed her in the wheelchair, without bothering to remove Samuel from her pants, meaning Michaelis was essentially sitting on him.<\/p>\n<p>The Michaelises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs8.com\/article\/news\/local\/her-newborn-baby-died-after-a-hospital-refused-to-treat-her\/509-6ccdaa51-6951-4bac-8f73-e6efbe20109a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">believe<\/a> the weight of his mother&#8217;s body on his head and torso led to the injuries that caused his death.<\/p>\n<p>While Samuel was born prematurely at 24 weeks, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/baby\/premature-baby-survival-rate#24-weeks\">estimated<\/a> 60-70% of babies survive at this age if born prematurely. Studies have found, however, that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-study-shows-that-up-to-71-of-premature-babies-can-survive-if-given-active-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to 71%<\/a> of premature infants, even those born before 24 weeks, can survive if they are given active care instead of just palliative care. A <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/youngest-preemie-world-21-weeks-going-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing number<\/a> of preemies have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ellie-21-weeks-guests-state-of-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survived<\/a> after being <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-baby-celebrates-first-birthday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">born<\/a> at 21 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not Samuel could have survived with better medical care may never be known for sure, but both he and his mother surely deserved better.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/actnow.io\/G3Bhv6M\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-325597\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-1-700x251.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-1-700x251.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-1-300x107.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-1-768x275.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-1-500x179.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/LA25DefundPP_EmailBannerAd-02-1.png 1167w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A pregnant California woman gave birth in a hospital parking lot after being repeatedly turned away by hospital staff.
