ACOG has referred for, advocated for, and promoted abortion for decades.<\/li>\n<li>ACOG&#8217;s Green Journal published a study on the &#8220;advance provision&#8221; of the abortion pill \u2014 which means dispensing the drug to women who are not pregnant, &#8220;just in case&#8221; they need it \u2014 which failed to disclose authors&#8217; clear conflicts of interest.<\/li>\n<li>The authors have every reason to promote advance provision of abortion drugs, as many benefit directly or indirectly from expanded access to the abortion pill.<\/li>\n<li>Advance provision of the abortion pill is not FDA-approved, despite Big Abortion&#8217;s promotion of the idea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Details:<\/h2>\n<p>Published in May 2025 in <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/greenjournal\/abstract\/2025\/05000\/telehealth_medication_abortion__comparing.12.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACOG&#8217;s Green Journal<\/a>, the cross-sectional study on advance provision of the abortion pill (when women receive the pill <em>before<\/em> they actually become pregnant, for later use), &#8220;Telehealth Medication Abortion: Comparing Advance-Provision Patients With Pregnant Patients,&#8221; was authored by Anna E. Fiastro, Elissa Brown, Peyton Smith, Erin K. Thayer, Emily M. Godfrey, and Rebecca Gomperts.<\/p>\n<p>The study indicated that the &#8220;authors did not report any potential conflicts of interest,&#8221; when there <strong>were<\/strong> conflicts of interest; and the &#8220;International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).&#8221; Both <a href=\"https:\/\/publicationethics.org\/guidance\/case\/undeclared-conflict-interest\">COPE<\/a> and ICMJE stress the importance of transparency about study authors&#8217; conflicting interests, with ICMJE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmje.org\/recommendations\/browse\/roles-and-responsibilities\/author-responsibilities--conflicts-of-interest.html\">noting<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Public trust in the scientific process and the credibility of published articles depend in part on how transparently an author\u2019s relationships and activities, directly or topically related to a work, are handled during the planning, implementation, writing, peer review, editing, and publication of scientific work.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>COPE additionally <a href=\"https:\/\/publicationethics.org\/guidance\/case\/undeclared-conflict-interest-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notes<\/a> that &#8220;Journals do have editorial responsibility as to how papers are presented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>ICMJE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmje.org\/recommendations\/browse\/roles-and-responsibilities\/author-responsibilities--conflicts-of-interest.html\">emphasized<\/a> more than once the importance of maintaining credibility and public trust in research:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Financial relationships (such as employment, consultancies, stock ownership or options, honoraria, patents, and paid expert testimony) are the most easily identifiable, the ones most often judged to represent potential conflicts of interest and thus the most likely to undermine the credibility of the journal, the authors, and of science itself&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet the advance-provision study failed to disclose potential financial ties from author Rebecca Gomperts.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A failure to cite authors&#8217; conflicts of interest \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Gomperts, Author: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dutch abortionist, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoutlawocean.com\/dispatches\/the-loophole-artist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women on Web<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/poland-abortion-drone-another-example-abortion-industrys-lawless-behavior\/\">Women on Waves<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/sex-love\/a23900324\/abortion-pill-by-mail-united-states-aid-access-women-on-web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Founded<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/aidaccess.org\/en\/page\/561\/who-are-we\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aid Access<\/a> in 2018 to utilize telemedicine for abortion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jul\/23\/shield-laws-provide-abortion-care-aid-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shipping<\/a> the drugs across the United States<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerzteliste-online.at\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Licensed<\/a> to practice medicine in Austria (not the U.S.) and reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rebecca-gomperts-5543731\/\">obtained<\/a> her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rebecca-gomperts-5543731\/details\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical degree<\/a> from the University of Amsterdam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The advance-provision abortion pill study &#8220;does not include follow-up data&#8221; focused on the 27 states &#8220;that were served by U.S. licensed providers [of Aid Access] during the timeframe&#8221; and were distributed in advance for &#8220;&lt;13 weeks gestation,&#8221; authors <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/aog_145_5_2025_03_04_tprfiastro_24-1873_sdc2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clarified<\/a> to editors.<\/p>\n<p>Aid Access <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-industry-abortion-pills-arent-pregnant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supplies<\/a>\u00a0so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ms-magazine-editor-advanced-provision-abortion-pills\/\">advance provision<\/a>\u201d abortion pills to women who are\u00a0<em>not pregnant<\/em>. In 2022, Gomperts <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/founder-international-abortion-businesses-lie-everybody\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Politico she hoped U.S. doctors would start to do likewise to evade abortion restrictions \u201cby writing a prescription for perfectly lawful medications for someone who is not, in fact, pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of this is <em>entirely breaking<\/em> FDA protocols.<\/p>\n<p>Any <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/unregulated-abortion-pill-founder-accessible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promotion<\/a> of the abortion pill \u2014 advanced or otherwise \u2014 directly impacts the pockets of Gomperts, which is a conflict. And despite editors <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/aog_145_5_2025_03_04_tprfiastro_24-1873_sdc2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">referencing<\/a> Aid Access multiple times in their correspondence to the authors, they failed to require a conflict disclosure from Gomperts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna E. Fiastro, Author:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/anna-fiastro-12955623\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Former<\/a> Planned Parenthood intern who <a href=\"https:\/\/familymedicine.uw.edu\/uw-wont-go-back-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leads<\/a> the &#8220;We Won&#8217;t Go Back&#8221; Initiative, &#8220;a University of Washington program to mentor and support primary care clinicians and staff to implement or grow abortion and reproductive health services in UW Medicine&#8221; which <a href=\"https:\/\/familymedicine.uw.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WGB-Learning-Collab_flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> the &#8220;Medication Abortion Access in Primary Care Learning Collaborative&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/familymedicine.uw.edu\/echo-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to<\/a> &#8220;support clinics to provide medication abortion.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/familymedicine.uw.edu\/accessdelivered\/about\/\">Oversees<\/a> UW&#8217;s &#8220;Access Delivered&#8221; program, which &#8220;collaborates with clinicians to integrate telehealth abortion care into routine services&#8221; and &#8220;partners with advocacy organizations, local clinics, and clinicians in 20 states to expand telehealth medication abortion services across the U.S.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Emily Godfrey, Author:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/familymedicine.uw.edu\/accessdelivered\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oversees<\/a> UW&#8217;s &#8220;Access Delivered&#8221; program (described above under Fiastro)<\/li>\n<li>Society of Family Planning (SFP) Fellow<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.uw.edu\/divisions\/complex-family-planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty<\/a> of UW&#8217;s Complex Family Planning Fellowship&#8221; \u2014 an abortion training program usually operated in conjunction with Ryan Residency programs<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/familymedicine.uw.edu\/profile\/?id=7741&amp;type=faculty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serves<\/a> as a &#8220;current member of the expert committee on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the UW program:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Family Planning at UW Medicine takes place at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwmedicine.org\/locations\/family-planning-uwmc-roosevelt\">Family Planning Clinic<\/a>, part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwmedicine.org\/locations\/womens-health-care-center-uwmc-roosevelt\">O<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwmedicine.org\/locations\/obgyn-primary-care-uwmc-roosevelt\">B\/GYN and Primary Care at UW Medicine &#8211; Roosevelt clinic<\/a>. Some of our faculty provide care at Harborview Medical Center and the VA. Our core faculty and fellows also provide abortion care several days a month at the Cedar River Clinics.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cedar River Clinics are an abortion chain in Washington State.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elissa Brown<\/strong> and <strong>Erin K. Thayer, Authors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Involved in UW&#8217;s &#8220;Access Delivered&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study was supported by the University of Washington Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/together.uw.edu\/Campaign\/help-fund-critical-abortion-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Planning Fund<\/a>. The Foundation has been financed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/about\/committed-grants\/2022\/09\/inv043805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gates Foundation<\/a>, which also <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/funded-bill-gates-abortion-pill-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funds<\/a> DKT International, a worldwide distributor of abortion pills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The study used a convenience sample from electronic medical record data between August 2021 and March 2023 of patients in 25 U.S. states and the District of Columbia who received abortion medications through Aid Access, a U.S. clinician-supported asynchronous telemedicine abortion service,&#8221; authors wrote, without mentioning Gomperts&#8217; involvement.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, the authors concluded:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Expanding access to advance provision through other telemedicine platforms and in clinical settings can help assess its ability to reach historically marginalized communities and those most affected by geographic barriers and legal restrictions. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Broader implementation and further research on the attitudes toward advance provision of those who experience more structural disadvantage in accessing abortion care are essential to understanding the potential of advance provision to enhance access to critical reproductive health care.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Reality Check:<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>\u2192Mifepristone <em>isn\u2019t even FDA-approved<\/em> for &#8216;advance provision.&#8217;\u2190<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Live Action News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-scheme-dispense-pills-before-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented how Big Abortion\u2019s media darling,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-financial-conflicts-interest-politicians-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Daniel Grossman<\/a> \u2014 an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/facebook-unbiased-fact-checkers-anything-but\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortionist<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaroleNovielli\/status\/1437141569384161281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ties<\/a> to an organization recently funded by the abortion pill\u2019s manufacturer \u2014 promoted the unapproved and dangerous idea that abortionists should dispense the abortion pill to women <em>before<\/em> they become pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Advance provision is a moniker denoting one more way the abortion industry is flouting the Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s (FDA) REMS safety requirements. To be approved to prescribe the abortion pill (mifepristone 200mg), prescribers must be able to properly date a pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Selling abortion pills <em>in advance of a pregnancy<\/em> is clearly ignoring the intent of the FDA&#8217;s safety requirement.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA has thus far failed to hold Danco and GenBioPro (the manufacturers) accountable for properly policing their prescribers and decertifying anyone who violates the FDA\u2019s REMS.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, states (which are <em>not<\/em> approved prescribers) are <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/increased-numbers-abortion-pill-stockpiling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stockpiling the drugs<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/virtual-abortion-pill-advance-provision-increase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion advocates<\/a> indiscriminately distribute the abortion pill with no verification of pregnancy. This outrageous violation of REMS safety regulations has likely led to multiple women being slipped abortion-inducing drugs by men seeking to terminate women&#8217;s desired pregnancies.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA previously warned shipping women (or teens) abortion pills\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ms-magazine-editor-advanced-provision-abortion-pills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>in advance<\/em><\/a> of verified pregnancies is risky, despite the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ms-magazine-editor-advanced-provision-abortion-pills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media abortion allies<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-industry-abortion-pills-arent-pregnant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advocate<\/a> for it. In 2022,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/10\/31\/advance-provision-fda-00064075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico<\/a> wrote, \u201cThe FDA said health providers prescribing abortion medication to people who aren\u2019t pregnant are acting without its authorization and that the practice is potentially dangerous for patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outlet added (emphases added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The FDA spokesperson told POLITICO that if mifepristone, which stops the flow of hormones supporting a fetus in the uterus, were prescribed before a patient is pregnant, <strong>providers wouldn\u2019t be able to properly oversee care to ensure safety and effectiveness<\/strong>. Abortion medication is regulated more tightly by the FDA than other drugs, restricting how the regimen can be prescribed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>[T]he FDA is concerned that if patients were to take mifepristone weeks or months after getting a prescription filled, <strong>a medical professional may not be able to assess if a pregnancy is intrauterine or ectopic or date pregnancies properly<\/strong>. The drug is only approved through 70 days gestation for abortions.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The Bottom Line:<\/h2>\n<p>Transparency and credibility in research is critical. The abortion industry has not been forthright in disclosing conflicts of interest in this most recent study or in previous studies regarding the abortion pill.
