Many involve &#8216;accidents&#8217; based on human error \u2014 such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/embattled-australian-fertility-company-wrong-sperm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrong sperm<\/a> being used to conceive a child in the lab or an embryo <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/conceiving-crime-fathers-instinct-not-right-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mixup<\/a> during the implantation phase. These &#8216;mistakes&#8217; have led to devastation for parents and children and lawsuits against fertility businesses. But what if the &#8216;mistake&#8217; wasn&#8217;t a mistake at all?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1uQUYm07M2k?si=9cZhzVcU5uHRL_Cw\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n the mid-1970s, as the fertility industry was beginning to gain popularity in the United States, a couple \u2014 each on their second marriage \u2014 wanted to have a baby. But the husband had previously undergone a vasectomy, and they knew that they would need the help of a fertility doctor in order to conceive a child. They turned to her OB\/GYN for help, and ultimately decided to use a sperm donor. Following a miscarriage, they learned she was pregnant again, and as the pregnancy progressed, they made plans for adding this new child into their lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 1977, they welcomed a baby girl they named Barbara, and all seemed fine for four decades \u2014 until that baby girl, now grown up and aware that she was conceived using a sperm donor, wanted to know more about her genetic background. It was 2018, and Barbara<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0knew <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nothing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about her biological father, so she did what more than 26 million other Americans have done \u2013 she took an at-home DNA test \u2014 two, actually \u2014 one through Ancestry.com and the other through 23andMe.com. It seemed like a simple process, but Barbara could never have imagined what she would soon learn about who her father <em>really<\/em> was. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The discovery would shock her and her parents, and send Barbara on a journey to find out more information, even putting an ad in a local newspaper.
