While both passive and active euthanasia were once unheard of, it is now perfectly legal in most states for a doctor to unilaterally decide that a parent&#8217;s precious child is not worthy of life, instructing medical staff to withhold resuscitative measures by placing a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order in a minor child\u2019s medical chart \u2014\u00a0with no effort to obtain parents&#8217; explicit informed consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a society that idolizes &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choice&#8221;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from \u201cyour way right away\u201d fast food to a culture of so-called \u201creproductive freedom\u201d \u2014 one would assume that a decision to <em>choose life<\/em> with full interventions would be readily accepted and honored. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, going against \u201cexpert\u201d medical recommendations by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choosing <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life-sustaining care for children <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believed <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be cognitively impaired (due to their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apparent or anticipated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inability to communicate sufficiently) requires parents&#8217; constant vigilance, education, and advocacy.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because doctors are acting within the authority of their facility\u2019s <\/span><b>futility policy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to forgo cardiopulmonary resuscitative (CPR) measures \u2014 and even delay, withhold, or deny the administration of life-sustaining nutrition, hydration, and oxygen to children who are deemed &#8220;incompatible with life&#8221; by supposed \u201cevidence-based scientific consensus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter when or why life-sustaining care is necessitated, <em>every parent<\/em> should be outraged to know that a complete stranger could be making critical life or death medical decisions for their cherished children behind their backs. These are difficult and complex decisions with grave ramifications resting squarely on the shoulders of parents. Thus, parents&#8217; right to decide what is best for their beloved child&#8217;s medical care should be held in the highest regard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-329947\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Simons-Law-Logo-Small-700x655.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Simons-Law-Logo-Small-700x655.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Simons-Law-Logo-Small-300x281.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Simons-Law-Logo-Small-768x719.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Simons-Law-Logo-Small-500x468.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Simons-Law-Logo-Small.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Medically Murdered<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simon Crosier<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was born in Missouri in 2010 with repairable congenital anomalies. Once a diagnosis of intellectual disability was added, it was noticeably accompanied by a significant reduction in the quality of medical care administered.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less than three months later, Simon experienced cardiopulmonary arrest and his parents pleaded with NICU staff to intervene.\u00a0 Yet, to the Crosiers\u2019 shock and dismay, neither Simon\u2019s blaring monitor alarms nor his panicking parents compelled any medical personnel to spring into action or initiate a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201ccode blue\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resuscitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t until one of Simon\u2019s nurses remorsefully confessed that medical staff had been <em>prohibited<\/em> from yielding to the Crosiers\u2019 frantic pleas for resuscitation, that Simon&#8217;s parents investigated further. The nurse insisted that they closely examine Simon\u2019s medical records \u2014 which revealed a <em>doctor-instituted<\/em> DNR. They also discovered that the evident reduction in medical care quality callously included <em>systematic starvation<\/em> and the administration of contraindicated medication with the <em>intention<\/em> of suppressing Simon\u2019s respiratory drive.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the most shocking revelation of all was that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Crosiers&#8217; experience<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1EFYxAZRR4c\"><strong>not<\/strong> an isolated incident<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A Providential Encounter<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three weeks after Simon\u2019s death, his mother, Sheryl Crosier, began pouring her heart and grief into writing, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books2read.com\/SIMON-CROSIER\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Am Not a Syndrome&#8211;My Name is Simon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; The publication of this book led to media interviews and speaking engagements \u2014 one of which resulted in a providential encounter with Bill Kidd, who was later elected to Missouri\u2019s House of Representatives and drafted the very first version of Simon\u2019s Law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rep. Bill Rhiley (center), at NACL<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes a requirement to aid in the smooth and speedy access of alternative opinions and to cooperatively facilitate a seamless life-sustaining transfer to a different facility. Furthermore, transparency is required on any existing policies involving resuscitation or life-sustaining measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Simon\u2019s Law Enacted<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the journey of legislation does not always run smoothly, <a href=\"https:\/\/simonslaw.org\/state-by-state\/\">progress is being made<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kansas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became the first state to enact Simon\u2019s Law.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the Crosiers\u2019 home state of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missouri <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">followed suit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iowa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Idaho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alabama<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> joined the ranks of Simon Safe States.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arkansas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passed similar legislation, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passed a version of Gracie\u2019s Law containing Simon\u2019s Law language.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utah<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> amended existing medical statutes to insert similar protections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the statutes of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oklahoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already contain similar provisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_329829\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-329829\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-329829\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Sheryl-Sandi-amp-Tabitha-with-Arkansas-Sen.-Jim-Dotson-Simons-Law-sponsor-at-PFLC-525x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Sheryl-Sandi-amp-Tabitha-with-Arkansas-Sen.-Jim-Dotson-Simons-Law-sponsor-at-PFLC-525x700.jpg 525w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Sheryl-Sandi-amp-Tabitha-with-Arkansas-Sen.-Jim-Dotson-Simons-Law-sponsor-at-PFLC-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Sheryl-Sandi-amp-Tabitha-with-Arkansas-Sen.-Jim-Dotson-Simons-Law-sponsor-at-PFLC-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Sheryl-Sandi-amp-Tabitha-with-Arkansas-Sen.-Jim-Dotson-Simons-Law-sponsor-at-PFLC-500x667.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Sheryl-Sandi-amp-Tabitha-with-Arkansas-Sen.-Jim-Dotson-Simons-Law-sponsor-at-PFLC.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-329829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sheryl, Sandi, &amp; Tabitha with Arkansas Sen. Jim Dotson (Simon\u2019s Law sponsor) at PFLC<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>It is time to move forward<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Near the close of 2024, Sheryl Crosier <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were honored to attend our first legislative conferences, where we appealed to hundreds of elected officials for parental rights, disability justice, and healthcare equity in order to protect the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doctors-said-tabitha-fatal-six-years-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tabithas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of society from Simon\u2019s fate.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opportunity to interact face-to-face with sympathetic legislators from multiple states in one place was most rewarding.\u00a0 Not only were we blessed to form connections with other like-minded organizations, but we were also encouraged by the receptiveness towards Simon\u2019s Law. In fact, legislators from both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colorado<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> subsequently introduced Simon\u2019s Law in 2025.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conventions themselves were also tremendously uplifting. We departed fully charged with a renewed sense of urgency to see such parental rights legislation enacted nationwide. Therefore, we are hopeful that the current Congressional climate will usher in passage of the <\/span><b>Simon Crosier Act<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which seeks to \u201camend titles XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act to require providers of services and health maintenance organizations under the Medicare and Medicaid programs to provide for certain policies to be in place relating to do-not-resuscitate orders or similar physician\u2019s orders for unemancipated minors receiving services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Author&#8217;s Note<\/strong>: Annual conference appearances are necessary for the <\/span>awareness, education, and advancement of Simon\u2019s Law parental rights legislation<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <strong>we humbly ask for <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paypal.com\/donate\/?hosted_button_id=CXWULA4GPMRGJ\">your support<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to underwrite the expenses relating to travel, lodging, dining, registration, and promotional materials for 10-12 legislative conference and committee testimony appearances annually.
