Now, she&#8217;s suing."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 21-year-old woman is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwf.org\/identity-crisis-stories\/cristina-hineman\/\">suing Planned Parenthood<\/a>, her surgeon, and her mental health counselors for failing to provide her with proper medical guidance before pushing her towards medically altering her life forever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cristina Hineman, who experienced gender dysphoria and other mental illnesses as a teen, sought<\/span> &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reject-planned-parenthood-expand-gender-affirming-minors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender-affirming care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d from Planned Parenthood<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> three weeks after turning 18, and got a testosterone prescription from a Planned Parenthood nurse practitioner after an appointment lasting less than 30 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one fateful appointment changed everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The road to Planned Parenthood<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hineman, who was homeschooled in elementary and middle school, grew up in the Hudson Valley in New York. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2AdJCMgq3hc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Independent Women\u2019s Forum, Hineman described herself as \u201ca really happy kid&#8221; and \u201ca girly kid\u201d who \u201cloved being outside.\u201d At the age of 12, Hineman felt that she was attracted to other girls, and searched the internet to find out what this could mean. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2AdJCMgq3hc?si=3BpQAqEZuJ7sGapI\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hineman\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cristina-Hineman_lawsuit_Stamped-Complaint.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lawsuit<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What she discovered confused her. Aside from reading about same-sex attraction, terms like \u2018demi-girl\u2019 and \u2018non-binary\u2019 popped up. She found it overwhelming but nonetheless intriguing on a certain level. A seed was planted, and for the next several years Cristina investigated these topics online.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Hineman began attending a public high school, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2AdJCMgq3hc\">became<\/a> friends with peers who called themselves \u201ctrans,\u201d and she felt \u201cleft out\u201d because she wasn\u2019t transgender. She decided to call herself &#8220;Violet&#8221; instead of Cristina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hineman began to experience mental health struggles, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. By late 2018, at age 15, Hineman&#8217;s struggles drove her to seek treatment at a children\u2019s mental health center. By then, Hineman was &#8220;scratching her arms and biting her hands to cope with her depressive symptoms,&#8221; according to her lawsuit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hineman began taking antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications, despite her mother\u2019s misgivings. In February of 2021, at age 17, Hineman was evaluated for autism and was diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/brain\/autism\/mental-health-aspergers-syndrome\">Asperger\u2019s Syndrome<\/a>, a condition on the autism spectrum which affects social and repetitive behaviors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the diagnosis, Hineman\u2019s therapist zeroed in on her gender confusion, affirming it instead of addressing her other diagnoses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Hineman consumed large amounts of online \u201ctrans\u201d content, mainly on YouTube and TikTok. This was \u201cthe nail in the coffin,\u201d according to Hineman.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She began to identify as \u201ctransgender\u201d while still a minor, and her therapist \u201cunquestioningly \u2018affirmed\u2019 her new gender identity,\u201d according to the lawsuit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hineman began working with a second therapist, who pushed Hineman to begin the process of \u201cmedically transitioning\u201d \u2014 again, without treating the teen\u2019s mental health comorbidities or even digging deeper into her gender dysphoria. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This led Hineman to Planned Parenthood, life-altering testosterone drugging, and a double-mastectomy \u2013 which her lawsuit calls \u201cprofoundly damaging surgery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>&#8220;Appalling breaches of the standard of care&#8221;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had heard online about Planned Parenthood as a provider which will just give you hormones if you want them, and doesn\u2019t do any kind of gatekeeping,\u201d Hineman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2AdJCMgq3hc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She went to a facility operated by the Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood affiliate in November of 2021, three weeks after her 18th birthday, to request testosterone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Hineman&#8217;s lawsuit states that her consultation was roughly 30 minutes long, she recalled in her interview that the appointment was \u201c<\/span>definitely less than thirty minutes<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if we take out the waiting room time.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She walked out of Planned Parenthood with a prescription for testosterone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the lawsuit, Planned Parenthood failed to treat Hineman properly in other, more significant ways. No one at Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood \u2014 no doctor, nurse practitioner, or anyone else \u2014 requested or \u201crequired any previous medical or mental health records, let alone asked about her mental health history. They did not inquire about or attempt to address or resolve any of Cristina\u2019s myriad mental health comorbidities. They simply took her at her word that she was a candidate for testosterone, a Schedule III controlled substance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood reportedly diagnosed Hineman with a gender identity disorder without a mental health evaluation and without even looking at her mental health or medical records. And though Planned Parenthood staff \u201ctook initial blood samples [from Hineman], they did not wait for any of the results before prescribing her with testosterone. Instead, Cristina was prescribed a 3-month supply of gel testosterone at this \u2018initial visit,\u2019\u201d the lawsuit states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Planned Parenthood nurse practitioner who saw Hineman for her initial consultation gave her a brief \u201cInformed Consent\u201d form to sign before prescribing the testosterone to the teen, which the lawsuit describes as a \u201cshockingly brief and entirely deficient recounting of the known risks associated with taking testosterone for gender identity disorder or gender dysphoria.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the form and the staff neglected to mention \u201cnumerous known risks and side effects of taking testosterone for girls or women, including, but not limited to: vaginal atrophy, vocal pain or damage, possible changes to sexual orientation, emotional lability, anger or emotional expressions, changes to bone density and structure (e.g., over-broadening of the shoulders, altering pelvic development, etc.), facial masculinization, and development of permanent masculine features, such as an Adam\u2019s apple,\u201d notes the lawsuit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, neither the form nor Planned Parenthood staff advised Hineman that cross-sex hormone usage for gender dysphoria is <em>not<\/em> FDA-approved and is an off-label use of drugs; she was also not informed of testosterone&#8217;s addictive effects. \u201cDefendants utterly failed to obtain informed consent,\u201d the lawsuit claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lawsuit notes that Hineman didn&#8217;t truly receive care at Planned Parenthood: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosing a patient with gender identity disorder and providing a prescription for cross-sex hormones to treat gender identity disorder or gender dysphoria after a single, thirty-minute meeting where no mental health evaluation or assessment was performed and where no attempt was made to resolve myriad mental health comorbidities are appalling breaches of the standard of care.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She visited Planned Parenthood for over a year, and the staff continued to prescribe her testosterone, even increasing her dosage twice at the teen\u2019s request. Though Hineman\u2019s blood was drawn, lab work was never discussed with her; she did not know whether her blood had ever been evaluated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood Upper Hudson advertises an \u201cinformed consent model\u201d for so-called \u201cgender affirming therapy\u201d (GAT). This means that the affiliate <em>does not require medical referrals<\/em> in order to prescribe life-altering drugs, as advertised on the affiliate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-upper-hudson\/patient-resources\/expanded-hours-walk-ins\/gender-affirming-healthcare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Planned Parenthood Upper Hudson even offers pubertal suppression, advertised on the same webpage. While most Planned Parenthood affiliates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/f9\/36\/f9363309-3b58-47e8-b6e6-f7421f7b4172\/gaht_health_care_handbook_web.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a comprehensive GAT plan \u2014 including a physical assessment, a review of medical history, and regular lab work \u2014 these protocols were clearly not followed in Hineman\u2019s case.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Going under the knife<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On February 1, 2023, Hineman\u2019s healthy breasts were removed by plastic surgeon Jeffrey L. Rockmore; Hineman\u2019s therapists supported her decision to undergo this entirely elective surgery. According to the lawsuit, Planned Parenthood Upper Hudson staff failed to advise Hineman to stop taking testosterone before her surgery, even though being on the hormone significantly increases the risk of blood clots after surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In hindsight, Hineman expressed regret that she had not stopped testosterone before \u201cgoing under the knife,\u201d as the drug suppressed her natural sex hormones and she feels this may have influenced her decision to remove her breasts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very soon after her mastectomy, Hineman longed to live as a woman and regretted her attempt to transition. About six weeks after her mastectomy, she suffered a mental breakdown. Emotional and full of regret, she attempted to find even small ways to reclaim her femininity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hineman returned to Planned Parenthood after stopping testosterone use to ask about what symptoms to expect as she went off of hormones. But when she spoke with the same nurse practitioner who had prescribed her testosterone, the staffer had no information for her regarding the detransitioning process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe had no idea\u2026 That was kind of the moment I just realized, like, wow, like, this woman doesn\u2019t even know what she\u2019s talking about. I don\u2019t understand how my consent could have been informed if the person prescribing it to me doesn\u2019t even know what happens if I stop. Let alone me knowing,\u201d Hineman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the lawsuit alleges, Planned Parenthood Upper Hudson failed to treat Hineman as an individual with her own medical history, instead blindly following Planned Parenthood Federation of America\u2019s mandate to prescribe \u201cgender-affirming\u201d drugs upon request. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-upper-hudson\/patient-resources\/expanded-hours-walk-ins\/gender-affirming-healthcare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affiliate website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states that it is \u201ccommitted to\u2026 eliminating barriers to [transgender] care.\u201d Hineman is suing both Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Hineman suffers from what may be permanent physical damage in addition to her missing breasts \u2014 a scarred and tight chest, nerve damage, masculine body and facial hair, an inability to lift weights, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hineman hopes that her lawsuit will help other young people to avoid the tragic path she took.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t want this to happen to other young people like me \u2014 young people with mental health problems who struggle to find their identity. I don\u2019t want them to be rushed down this path and to feel like this is the only choice that they have to live a good life, because it\u2019s not, and people don\u2019t tell you that in these kinds of spaces,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwf.org\/identity-crisis-stories\/cristina-hineman\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appearance date for her lawsuit, filed last year, is <a href=\"https:\/\/iapps.courts.state.ny.us\/webcivil\/FCASSearch\">scheduled<\/a> for April 28, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood claims to be committed to helping men and women, including minors, with types of &#8220;gender-affirming care&#8221; while<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/transgender-identifying-individuals-planned-parenthood-cash-cows\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cashing in<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by rushing vulnerable people through life-altering, experimental procedures without following appropriate medical standards \u2014 and without real informed consent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not real healthcare. It harms men, women, and children.
