But for the team at Children\u2019s Minnesota, they set a record caring for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsaz.com\/2025\/03\/28\/baby-weighing-only-8-ounces-birth-makes-it-home-time-1st-birthday\/\">one of the tiniest babies<\/a>, who is now going home on his first birthday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawa Mohamed had always dreamed of being a mother. When she found she was pregnant with not one, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> babies, she counted her blessings. However, the path ahead wasn\u2019t exactly simple and easy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although most multiples arrive early for a variety of reasons, Mohamed\u2019s quintuplets were born on March 24, 2024, at just over 23 weeks\u2019 gestation. The odds that all five of the siblings would survive were around just 10%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tiniest baby, Bilal, weighed just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight ounces<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 about the size of a small apple. This was one that was definitely for the record books, said Dr. Thomas George, Director of Neonatology of Children\u2019s Minnesota. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Eight ounces would make Bilal the second smallest baby in the world described in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/webapps1.healthcare.uiowa.edu\/tiniestbabies\/Infant\/List\/All\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tiniest babies registry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; Dr. George said, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsaz.com\/2025\/03\/28\/baby-weighing-only-8-ounces-birth-makes-it-home-time-1st-birthday\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WCCO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Being a baby that tiny comes at risks for all kinds of things, such as brain bleeds, inflammation of the intestines, sepsis, and more, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21479-premature-birth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But Bilal has done well and is the last of his siblings to go home, just in time for his first birthday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe kids overcame extraordinary odds,\u201d said Dr. George.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F3llA4ixdJ4?si=MX9PFkSzXOJu8At2\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though many micro-preemies are at risk for developmental delays and disorders such as cerebral palsy, all five siblings are expected to have a normal development, Children\u2019s Minnesota <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrensmn.org\/blog\/tiniest-baby-in-the-country-and-a-quintuplet-finally-goes-home-thanks-to-life-saving-care-at-childrens-minnesota\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t think he was going to make it,\u201d Mohamed said of Bilal. \u201cWe were living by the hour, and by the grace of God, he is here.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaring for such a tiny baby is incredibly challenging. Bilal and his siblings required the full range of expert care we provide at The Mother Baby Center, from the maternal-fetal specialists at Allina Health to the neonatal expertise at Children\u2019s Minnesota,\u201d said Dr. George. \u201cIt took a team of hundreds of neonatal experts to get Bilal and his siblings to this point. Our team is thrilled for Bilal to finally be going home to join his brothers and sisters!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S-lQOooYAs8?si=hYAj-nJi0C30aXXh\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Live Action News has reported, in February of 2019, a baby born in Tokyo weighing in at less than 10 ounces was considered to be the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/10-ounces-smallest-baby-hospital\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smallest surviving baby at the time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In May of the same year, baby Saybie went home following a NICU stay after being born at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-9-ounces-home-san-diego\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8.6 ounces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In June of 2020, baby Kwek Yu Xuan was born in Singapore weighing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/8-ounces-smallest-preemie-baby-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7.5 ounces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; she went home the following year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tiny, precious babies are testament to advances in medical science, leaps and bounds from when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2021\/11\/29\/viability-standard-abortion-supreme-court-hammond\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a law clerk arbitrarily set the unscientific &#8220;age of viability\u201d at 28 to 24 weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and bear witness to how the outlook for the tiniest babies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30353079\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when their humanity is respected and they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-2249383\/The-tiny-premature-baby-lived-doctors-recorded-weight-incorrectly-battled-alive.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">given a chance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of the magnitude of her many blessings is lost on Mohamed. Speaking through a translator, she gave thanks for her children doing well, and for her tiniest son to finally be at home with her, as she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F3llA4ixdJ4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bounced the chubby baby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0on her knee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll praise to God,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;m very happy today because my children and I are healthy and going home.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And she\u2019ll never forget how Children\u2019s Minnesota cared for her babies in their hour of need: \u201cAll the staff here helped me a lot.
