{"id":328855,"date":"2025-03-31T15:35:28","date_gmt":"2025-03-31T20:35:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=328855"},"modified":"2025-04-03T00:10:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T05:10:58","slug":"colorado-lawmaker-abortion-cheaper-than-birth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/colorado-lawmaker-abortion-cheaper-than-birth\/","title":{"rendered":"Colorado lawmaker argues for taxpayer-funded abortion&#8230; because it&#8217;s cheaper than birth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>As Colorado lawmakers consider a bill to enable taxpayer-funded abortion in the state, House Speaker Julie McCluskie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/colorado-dems-push-taxpayer-funded-abortion-for-poor-women-to-save-the-state-money-birth-is-more-expensive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> that legislators should be in favor of killing preborn children&#8230; because it&#8217;s <em>cheaper than paying for Medicaid-funded births<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2025A\/bills\/fn\/2025a_sb183_00.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 183<\/a> would require taxpayer-funded abortion and would also mandate that public employee insurance plans cover the cost of abortions. It passed the Senate last month and is now being considered in the House.<\/p>\n<p>The shocking statements were made during a House Health &amp; Human Services Committee hearing last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA birth is more expensive than an abortion,\u201d McCluskie said. \u201cUltimately, we do achieve a cost savings because of the averted births that will not take place.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Colorado House Speaker advocates for abortion because giving birth apparently costs more than killing a baby.<\/p>\n<p>This is absolutely sickening.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EFlB09nTp9\">pic.twitter.com\/EFlB09nTp9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Media Research Center (@theMRC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/theMRC\/status\/1905259163078234320?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 27, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When McCluskie refers to &#8220;averted births,&#8221; she is actually talking about the brutal murder of preborn children in the womb. The only way to prevent a preborn child who is already living and growing from being born is to either starve him, dismember him, or poison him.<\/p>\n<p>But according to supporters of the bill, this killing is preferable because it&#8217;s cheaper than supporting these individuals once they&#8217;re born.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zVk1qM1El9o?si=o0VPOXq0MuniD4KJ\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That savings comes from the averted births that will not occur because abortions happened instead,&#8221; McCluskie explained.<\/p>\n<p>The statements were blasted by many in the pro-life community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeriously, the bill\u2019s sponsors are saying that if more babies die by abortion it will be cheaper for the state,\u201d Dr. Catherine Wheeler, a former abortionist-turned pro-life OB\/GYN told the committee.<\/p>\n<p>Brittany Vessely, executive director of the Colorado Catholic Conference, also took issue with the statement, as well as the idea that there would even be a cost savings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fiscal note drastically underestimates the cost of abortion, especially late abortion,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/2025\/03\/25\/colorado-bill-enshrine-abortion-access-legislature-save-money-medicaid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> The Denver Post. \u201cTo say that this saves the state money because of a one-time payment \u2014 it\u2019s abominable.
