Despite their objections, the bill passed the New Mexico House of Representatives by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/news\/local_news\/republicans-decry-lujan-grishams-funding-for-abortion-clinic-in-northern-new-mexico\/article_fe1f0736-2f84-4778-8aea-b7f8b2e696a3.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41-25 vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and now moves to the state Senate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility, which would be overseen by the University of New Mexico, follows a similar $10 million appropriation in 2023 for an abortion facility in Las Cruces. While the governor\u2019s office has promoted the project as \u201ca comprehensive reproductive health center\u201d providing services such as contraception, miscarriage management, and cancer screenings, its primary purpose is to expand abortion access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Mexico has no restrictions on when or why an abortion can be performed, and the University of New Mexico is known to provide abortions up to 23 weeks and 6 days gestation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-mexico-gov-abortion-center-state-border\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Live Action News have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/unm-body-parts-19-week-aborted-florida\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the university\u2019s involvement in fetal research using the remains of aborted babies. Attorney Mike Seibel obtained records showing that the university has shipped body parts of aborted babies across the United States and into Canada. The remains of these preborn children, including brains, lungs, and eyes, were used for research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eR1Ut4BPbOw?si=ETBaneRj9Qgj8F6Z\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republican Rep. Rod Montoya introduced an amendment to remove the abortion funding from the bill and criticized the way it was quietly added without broader discussion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUs using taxpayer dollars in New Mexico to create a state-funded abortion clinic that caters to out-of-state abortion-seekers is just \u2026 a pill that is too hard to swallow,\u201d Montoya <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/2025\/03\/19\/republicans-balk-at-govs-10m-request-for-northern-nm-reproductive-health-care-clinic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His amendment was ultimately blocked by the Democratic majority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republican Rep. Stefani Lord also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newmexicosun.com\/stories\/670621348-state-rep-lord-grisham-snuck-10-million-into-hb-450-while-nm-needs-millions-for-roads-water-law-enforcement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condemned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the move, calling attention to the urgent infrastructure needs in her district that remain unfunded. \u201cAt the last minute, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham sneaks in $10 million for an abortion clinic while my district needs millions for roads, water, law enforcement, fire departments, administration buildings, bridges, sewer lines,\u201d Lord wrote in a social media post on March 19. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She pointed out that her district is still waiting on $5 million for a desperately needed well in the city of Estancia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mark Cavaliere, CEO of Southwest Coalition, told Live Action News in a statement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>New Mexico has become a maternal health desert, where abortion access already grotesquely overshadows prenatal and childbirth care. Post-Dobbs, abortion profiteers have invaded our state, ballooning from six to 26 businesses\u2014now exceeding actual childbirth services. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Yet, our Governor has the gall to siphon yet another $10 million of our hard-earned tax dollars for even more abortion, shamelessly targeting Texas and now Colorado women to pad the abortion industry\u2019s profits on our dime. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>This isn\u2019t just a betrayal of New Mexicans\u2014it\u2019s a moral atrocity, a fiscal outrage, and a slap in the face to every woman in our state yearning for genuine healthcare that actually supports and nurtures her body and health instead of altering, suppressing, and destroying it.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerned Women for America, a conservative Christian women\u2019s legislative action committee, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/concernedwomen.org\/urgent-act-now-to-stop-10-million-in-taxpayer-funds-to-new-mexico-abortion-clinic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> New Mexico residents to speak out against it before the Senate vote. \u201cWe are outraged by the shocking and underhanded actions of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham,\u201d the organization stated. \u201cIn a last-minute political maneuver, she has requested an additional $10 million from the state legislature to fund yet another taxpayer-funded abortion center \u2014 this time in Northern New Mexico. This comes on top of the $10 million already allocated last year for an abortion facility in Las Cruces.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The governor\u2019s office <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/2025\/03\/19\/republicans-balk-at-govs-10m-request-for-northern-nm-reproductive-health-care-clinic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the funding, claiming that expanding abortion access is \u201cnecessary\u201d to meet demand following the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s 2022 decision to overturn <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, lawmakers and pro-life advocates rightly argue that this is not about health care but rather an effort to make New Mexico a destination for abortion, using taxpayer dollars to fund a
